The Amish Experience F/X Theater is currently presenting the critically acclaimed "Jacob's Choice" . This dramatic tale of an Amish family's effort to preserve a lifestyle and a culture is unforgettably told through a high-tech, multi-media production conceived in the finest tradition of Hollywood or Orlando themed attractions. Most recently re-mastered in 2003, with improved visuals and added sound design, you will experience "400 years of history in 40 minutes of magic." Only the third "experiential" theater in North America, the Amish Experience Theater, three years in research and planning, has been designed to break down the barrier of audience and movie screen or stage. Changes in the environmental space within the theater "magically" occur and allow you to "experience" the action along with the characters. Surrounded by five specially designed projection surfaces, three dimensional sound imagery, over 100,000 watts of stage lighting combined with "Pepper's Ghost" and other special effects, "Jacob's Choice" nevertheless remains a touching, personal story of an Amish family through the ages.

THE OLD ORDER AMISH: TO REMAIN IN THE
FAITH OR TO LEAVE
T homas J. M eyers The Amish continue to amaze the non-Amish world with their
capacity to retain a distinct cultural identity. Rather than conforming
to the values of modern society, they have insisted that being "in the
world and not of the world" is the best adaptation of the New
Testament model of Christian community. Their conscious effort to be
different from the fallen world by consciously drawing symbolic
boundaries between themselves and the society around them continues
to mystify and intrigue. Questions frequently posed by non-Amish
include: What keeps Amish people from being seduced by the modern
world? And for those who leave, what factors lead to the decision to defect? This paper will examine some of the push and pull forces that influence Amish youth in their decisions regarding church membership. Factors to be examined include father's occupation, marriage and family dynamics, gender, urbanization, variations in degree of severity of Ordnung, and attendance at an Amish school.

Origins of the Old Order Amish
The Amish, called "The Plain People" or Old Order Amish, originated in Switzerland about l525. They came from a division of the Mennonites or Anabaptists (Re-baptizers). They opposed the union of church and state and infant baptism. They baptized people only as adults at about age l8. Adult baptism was a crime in the l6th century. Therefore, the Amish come from an impressive list of martyrs. They were put in sacks and thrown into rivers in Europe. There are no Amish left in Europe; The Amish were saved from extinction by William Penn who granted a haven from religious persecution in America. Since early colonial days the Amish have lived in the United States preserving their distinctive culture, dress, language and religion in peace and prosperity. A few years ago they were again accused of crimes failing to have their children attend school with state certified teachers or failure to send them beyond the eighth grade. Until the United States Supreme Court in the case of Wisconsin vs. Yoder

The Amish In Northern Indiana
Goshen College lies between two of the most prominent Amish settlements in the mid-west: Skirted on the east by the third largest Amish settlement in America, Goshen students rub shoulders with this unique otherworldly community with relative ease and comfort. Highlighted by the newly-completed Shipshewana visitor center, Menno Hof , the community attracts more than a million visitors each year. The Amish broke away from the Mennonites nearly 300 years ago when differences arose among Anabaptist leaders in Switzerland and Alsace. Seeking a stricter lifestyle including the Streng Meidung , or shunning, which includes the social avoidance of erring church members. Tensions ran high and eventually in 1693, a complete split occurred. Forty years later, many Amish responded to William Penn's invitation to come to America and settle the land. No Amish now remain in Europe. Currently there are approximately 145,000 Amish men, women and children living in 22 states in the United States and in Ontario, Canada. There are 220 Amish settlements accommodating over 900 geographically determined church districts. Persistence of tradition and slowness to modernize have characterized the Amish as they have steadily sought to carve out their lifestyle which is a culture apart from the world. Even at the dawn of the 21st century, Amish are characterized as humble folkhard working, neighborly, otherwordly, agrarian, God-fearing, ethnically homogenouswho live the simple life and live it well.

58. The Amish Attic
Offers a wide selection of handcrafted baskets that are individually signed by the family.
http://www.theamishattic.com/
Welcome!
The Amish family who provides our fine baskets is TEMPORARILY unable to provide the Amish Attic with product to sell until the summer of 2005. They are in the process of moving to a new home. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Please check back and view the new additions to our product line coming this summer! Thank you for your patience! These authentic handcrafted Amish baskets enhance every room of the house and make great gifts too!! All of our beautiful baskets are handmade by an Amish family here in Southwest Wisconsin. The entire family works together. Each member of the Amish family has a designated job to do. The base of the basket is made of birch plywood. The weaving material is bamboo. The handles are either oak or ash (a few are leather), and the lids are lunan. The bamboo reeds are soaked first, so they can be weaved. Handles are put into boiling water for 10 to 20 minutes, and then put on a jig or mold, and clamped and baked for a day so they retain their shape. The stain used is 3 parts linseed oil and 5 parts stain. They are mixed together in a large tub and the baskets are dipped in the mixture. They are then set aside to dry. Each basket is signed and dated by the family.
