The tropical environment has supplied them with valuable resources for both commercial cocoa farming, a recent economic innovation, and gold mining, which in former times supported regal opulence and pageantry. The Ashanti empire, the largest and most powerful of the precolonial polities, owes its prominence to is location within the region's richest goldfields. The traditional kingdom remains an important national cultural and political force and is inseparably tied to the structures and functions of the matrilineal descent system which forms the foundation for the Akan social order." - From University of Manitoba - http://www.umanitoba.ca/anthropology/tutor/case_studies/akan/lineage.html

THE TWI SPEAKING PEOPLE The history of Ghana is, in fact, the history of the Twi speaking people who now call themselves the Akan. The Akan people are among the most prominent and traditionally well-cultured indigenous inhabitants of Africa. There are many groups that constitute the Akan people. They can be divided and subdivided into the Twi, the Fante, Akim, Ashanti, Juaben, and Agona people who respect and believe in tradition. As reflected in their life style, all-important events in life involve various rituals and rites. From the Adae to the Odiwira to the Homowo to the Damba to the Yam festival, Ghana is a land of rituals, shrines and festivals. Of significance in the Akan culture is the symbolic representation of the “Stool.” In general, the stool symbolizes the “soul of the nation.” It is believed that the stool is a representative (repository) of the Ancestors. Thus, the stool itself inspires and is accorded great honor and respect. Another important culture symbol of the Akan people is the Kente fabric. The precious Kente is the cultural identity and landmark symbol of the Akan people. Historically, this precious Kente assisted in serving as a goal of healing and unifying the fragmented elements of the Akan People into a whole, a Nation. The precious Kente is now the National Symbol of Ghana, West Africa. The production of this precious Kente is over 10,000 years old. The Akan people have lived and ruled their land for thousands of years before they experienced the consecutive disruptions by Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British invasion and domination. When the Portuguese invaded the West Coast of Africa in 1471, they found a people rich in history, culture, and tradition and gold. As a result of not appreciating the spiritual significance of the culture and history, the Portuguese focused on the material abundance of the gold and named the region the “Gold Coast.”

I am using this web site to bring together several of my articles about Kwawu culture and social structure, and also some of my slides, maps and other documents. I will briefly describe some of the contents of the site here. While I am teaching at Camosun College , I am using its technical facilities in AV (Audio Visual). They have recently purchased a new scanner that can make digital images from slides. It is a slow and tedious process, and it took me one day to do the first twenty slides. As my slides are now more than thirty years old, many spoiled by the travel over those years, some destroyed by various moulds and fungi from the hot and humid weather of the tropics, I am taking time between teaching obligations to scan them before they are lost.
The “ Abe (Palm) ” paper is very light. It is from a collection of slides that I took during the seventies when I was a PhD student at the University of Ghana, Legon. I have selected some of those slides, and trimmed and enhanced them with digital editing. I use them here to demonstrate that the oil palm tree (like the Cedar for West Coast First Nations) has many uses, and that many of them can be used to illustrate the difference between women’s work and men's work. Too many slides made the page open slowly, so I have divided it up into:

Ozgur Akan, the founder of jEopardy Project , has been working on open source software and networking since 1996. Since learning more about the GNU project the will of doing something useful for people has never left him. Born in Istanbul on December 29, 1977, it was early in his first year of university (1996) that he first meet linux and GNU. Being one of the founders of the Turkey PHP Group, he wrote several articles in monthly magazines. Getting deeper into networking and linux he finally started to work on the linux kernel which inspired him to create a tool based on netfilter.

The Akan King in Denmark
Ghana and their history and rich cultural traditions go as far back as anyone can remember. Keeping traditions alive and passing it on to the next generation is actually one of the main reasons that the ceremony is carried out among the Akans now living in Denmark. The cultural festival marks a new year and maybe a new king, but first of all it is a social and cultural event bringing people together to have fun. It is an occasion where ancestors are honoured and history is explained to the children. The Akans consist of several ethnic groups which all speak Twi of Fante. They also have common traditions and culture, among them the importance of sacred stools representing the kings and chiefs. When a king and queen (Akanhene and Akanhemmaa) are elected, they are said to be enstooled. The stool represents their power and draw historic lines back to the ancestors. The hand-woven Kente material is another important cultural symbol and nearly everybody wears something of Kente on a special occasion like this.
