Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam
User comment on article: [Finding Moderate Muslims:] Do you believe in modernity?
Submitted by Ansar Raza (raza58@sympatico.ca), December 27, 2004 at Dear Dr. Pipes
I believe that a scholar like you must have knowledge of Ahmadiyya movement in Islam which always advocate modernity, peace and condemns terrorism whether in Palestine, Kashmir, Chechnya or anywhere else in the world, holy war and blood-shedding in the name of religion; grants equal rights to women; accepts the validity of all other religions; always ready to learn from East, West, North, South.
We believe that all the citizens have equal rights in a state whether Muslim or non-Muslim and any Muslim have right and liberty to convert to any other religion or no religion. Mere disagreement in theology doesn't entail "takfir".
The founder of the movement who claimed to be the Promised Messiah, preached non-violence and exhorted his followers to win the hearts not the lands for Islam.
It is ironical that the western scholars including yourself, who are busy day and night and very rightly condemning the jihad and lust of the Muslims for lands and rule over the whole world, cannot discern the standard-bearer of peace, modernity, submission to the law of the land and condemnation of terrorism, i.e., the Ahmadiyya movement in Islam.

Controversial Canadian Muslim Leader Fuels Anti-Ahmadiyya Sectarian Controversy, Claims Ahmadiyya Muslims Are British Creations
print-friendly version Comments (53) TrackBack (48) By Ahmed Nassef and Jehad Aliweiwi At a time when Ahmadiyya Muslims are been persecuted in Bangladesh and Pakistan by fundamentalist Islamists and banned from entering Saudi Arabia, the leader of the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC) has brought the sectarian controversy to North America by accusing Ahmadiyyas of being a product of British Colonialism and implying that they are non-Muslim. In a message widely circulated on the advent of Ramadan, Mohamed Elmasry, National President of CIC, said the Ahmaddiya Movement in Islam came about as a result of the British "approach to encourage, support and even finance a religion of their liking in order to control and subjugate Muslims in India and the Middle East." His remarks drew anger and outrage from other Canadian Muslim groups. Tarek Fatah of the Muslim Canadian Congress, a group that campaigns for strict separation of religion and state, condemned what he called an attack on the Ahmadiyya community. "It is inflammatory, provocative and absolutely unnecessary. Is this the best way to welcome Ramadan?" said Fatah, speaking to MWU! "In Bangladesh, Ahmadiyya Muslims are facing a fight for their lives, being hounded and attacked by Islamic fundamentalists. Elmasry's remarks clearly fuel the fire and will encourage Islamist vigilantes to further attack the life and property of Ahmadiyya Muslims," he said. Tarek Fatah, himself a Sunni Muslim who lives in Toronto, said one does not have to agree with the beliefs of the Ahmadiyya Muslims to come to their defense.

About 100,000 members of the movement live in Bangladesh. The ban was imposed in January by the religious affairs ministry following protests by Islamic groups who want the Ahmadiyyas to be declared non-Muslims. The Ahmadiyyas, also called Kadiyanis, do not believe Mohammed was necessarily the last prophet, which many mainstream Muslims regard as blasphemous. Hearing next month The legal challenge was launched by human rights groups in Bangladesh, as well as a member of the Ahmadiyya community. They argued that the ban on books was a denial of basic human rights. The court issued an interim order suspending it, pending a full hearing that is expected next month. The Ahmadiyya movement, which claims 200 million members worldwide, was founded in the 19th century in India.

I. Introduction
Before September 11, 2001, the United States characterized the Pakistani government as an unstable regime with a tarnished history of corrupt dictators, military coups, and territorial violence along its borders. *** Top of Page 218 *** The two issues of human rights and terrorism were treated as unconnected, without the slightest suggestion that addressing the former would be helpful in addressing the latter. ummah Doctrinal interpretations peculiar to Ahmadis were deemed sufficient to place them outside the pale of Islam by the religious orthodoxy. For over five decades, Ahmadis have endured senseless persecution. Their mosques have been burned, their graves desecrated, and their very existence criminalized. According to a 2002 United States State Department report, since 1999 316 Ahmadis have been formally charged in criminal cases (including blasphemy) owing to their religion. Between 1999 and 2001, at least twenty-four Ahmadis were charged with blasphemy; if convicted, they could be sentenced to life imprisonment or death.

The government has banned all publications of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Bangladesh a day before the end of an ultimatum by religious bigots to declare the sect non-Muslims. "The ban was imposed in view of objectionable materials in such (Ahmadiyya) publications which hurt or might hurt the sentiments of the majority Muslim population of Bangladesh," said a press release of the home ministry yesterday. The bigots represented mainly by Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), a partner of the ruling coalition, have long been campaigning for the move. The Hifazate Khatme Nabuwat Andolon (HKNA), represented by IOJ leaders, spearheads the anti-Ahmadiyya agitation. The move is believed to be the first step towards declaring about one lakh Ahmadiyyas in the country non-Muslims, said a source present at a high-level meeting at the religious affairs ministry yesterday. The government has not yet taken any decision on the issue of declaring the Ahmadiyyas non-Muslims, he added. "We discussed the demand but need to explore all aspects to reach a decision in this regard," a top government official who was present at the meeting said on condition of anonymity.

Ahmadiyya complex capture plan foiled
Staff Correspondent
Police action and civil society resistance kept at bay religious fanatics who threatened to capture the Ahmadiyya headquarters in Bakshibazar yesterday to the relief of Dhaka residents reeling from deadly grenade attacks on an Awami League rally. The fanatics under the banner of Aamra Dhakabashi failed to gather at any point in the capital, but threatened to take the Ahmadiyya base soon after the release of their four top leaders arrested overnight. A Dhaka court sent Aamra Dhakabashi President Shamsul Huq, Secretary General Jamal Nasser Chowdhury and key leaders Abdul Kader and Sharafat Ali to jail yesterday. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Bangladesh, hailed the government and civil society steps, saying the government role proved it could resist fundamentalists if it wanted. Fourteen platoons of police were deployed at 12 points in and around the Ahmadiyya Complex in the morning to stop Aamra Dhakabashi activists who threatened to say their Friday prayers at the mosque in the sect's headquarters 'at any cost'. A group of bigots tried to gather at Islambagh Jam-e-Mosque, Chawkbazar Shahi Mosque and Boro Katara Madrasa before the Juma prayers, but police scared them away.

Bangladesh: Ahmadiyya mosque razed, 12 houses robbed by jihadists
In the view of these "orthodox Muslim fanatics," Muslim heretics have no religious or even human rights. From the Daily Star , with thanks to Twostellas: Orthodox Muslim fanatics razed an Ahmadiyya mosque at Bhadughar in Brahmanbaria minutes before the Juma prayers yesterday. In the latest incident of persecution of the minority religious sect, the hate-filled mob vandalised and robbed Ahmadiyya houses, injuring at least 11, including six women. One of the injured, Shabju Mia, 52, president of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Bhadughar chapter and imam of the mosque, is in critical condition and undergoing treatment at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.... Witnesses said local BNP leader and former ward commissioner Abdul Quddus led the raiders who were carrying a banner of International Tahaffuz-e-Khatme Nabuwat Committee, Bangladesh. Quddus, with two local businessmen Sobhan and Hossain - acting as his lieutenants, arrived with about 100 people carrying sticks in front of the tin-roofed bamboo-walled mosque at 1:00pm and asked the congregation to let them in. "They asked our people to vacate the mosque saying we'll not be permitted to worship there any more," Monjur Hossain, district amir of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat, told The Daily Star.
