Julian Sanchez characterizes me as an "enemy" of Open Source (OS). "Open source agnostic" would be a better term than "enemy." Opposition to proposals for government preferences are not necessarily based on enmity for the Open Source movement, which has some impressive strengths and has produced some significant accomplishments. But I do not share the messianic dedication that infuses many of its proponents.
The movement must be given due credit. Much fine software has been developed by programmers at universities, governments, and private companies, working cooperatively, either on their own time or with the blessings of their employers. A large group of smart people each devoting a small percentage of his time, linked by the Internet, can be highly creative. The results offer many possibilities for the future.

CREATIVE AGNOSTICISM
Robert Anton Wilson
One of the greatest achievements of the human mind, modern science, refuses to recognize the depths of its own creativity, and has now reached the point in its development where that very refusal blocks its further growth. Modern physics screams at us that there is no ultimate material reality and that whatever it is we are describing, the human mind cannot be parted from it. —Roger Jones, Physics as Metaphor I f, as Colin Wilson says, most of history has been the history of crime, this is because humans have the ability to retreat from existential reality into that peculiar construct which they call The Real” Universe and I have been calling hypnosis. Any Platonic “Real” Universe is a model, an abstraction, which is comforting when we do not know what to do about the muddle of existential reality or ordinary experience. In this hypnosis, which is learned from others but then becomes self-induced, The “Real” Universe overwhelms us and large parts of existential, sensory-sensual experience are easily ignored, forgotten or repressed. The more totally we are hypnotized by The “Real” Universe, the more of existential experience we then edit out or blot out or blur into conformity with The “Real” Universe.

"SOAP is Dead" if you believe the echo chamber
This is something of a followup to my post on the XML Team weblog last week, taking into consideration some of the feedback. I'm getting just a wee bit annoyed about the echo chamber repeating "SOAP is dead" to itself around the blogosphere, with nobody adding any actual evidence other than the success of various Web applications built mainly with HTTP. There are plenty of people I know and respect, and plenty I don't know but enjoy reading their blogs, making this point. I'll use Carlos Perez's post [someone I don't know personally] as the whipping boy, just to get back at him for " Mike Champion of course is prepared to defend the faith" :-) To jump to the bottom line, I'm not defending the faith, I'm defending agnosticism. There are a range of technologies available to developers: some simple, some complex; some MS-specific, some Java-specific, some platform-neutral; some Web-based, some protocol-neutral; some tightly coupled, some loosely coupled; some favor up-front design, some are more evolutionary. The choice of one over another in a specific application is a business and engineering decision, not something to be determined by "faith-based programming" in accordance to either the SOAP or REST religion. Carlos Perez writes: Isn't SOAP the underpinnings of Web Services, the same technology that was billed as the silver bullet to extinguish our collective integration nightmare?

Challenge supernaturalism in all its forms, from religion to ouija boards "Man is certainly stark mad; he cannot make a worm, yet he will make gods by the dozen." Michel de Montaigne James A. Haught "Religion is all bunk." Thomas Edison
Welcome to a quest for mental honesty. I'm an old newspaper editor who has spent half a century chronicling social struggles and cultural tides. Personally, I've waged a long crusade for rational, scientific thinking as an antidote for harmful supernaturalism. I've written five books and many magazine articles against religion, astrology, mysticism, psychic claims, cults, "New Agery," fundamentalism, and other magical beliefs. Although billions of people pray to invisible gods, there's no actual evidence of deities and devils, heavens and hells, spirits and prophecies, etc. They're just imaginary, as far as a sincere inquirer can tell. So, to me, the only honest viewpoint is the humanist one, which doubts the supernatural and focuses on improving human life. This web site contains some of my skeptical pieces - plus others on science, sailing, sex, serenity, the joy of nature, and the meaning of life (or lack thereof). You're free to read, download, print out, circulate or reprint any of these materials.

Agnosticism
General Information Agnosticism is the philosophical position that it is impossible to know about the nature or existence of God. The term was coined in 1869 by Thomas H Huxley from the Greek agnostos ("unknowable") to refer to his own conviction that knowledge is impossible on many matters covered by religious doctrines. Agnosticism is therefore concerned with questions of Epistemology, the examination of human knowledge; it considers valid only knowledge that comes from ordinary and immediate experience. Agnosticism is distinct from Atheism on the one hand and Skepticism on the other. Atheists reject belief in the existence of God. Skeptics hold the strong suspicion or probabilistic estimate that God does not exist. Agnostics refuse to make such judgments. The agnostic position is as old as philosophy and can be traced to the pre Socratics and to the skeptics of ancient Greece. In modern times, agnosticism became prevalent during the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly because of the growing mass of scientific data that seemed to contradict the biblical position and because of the disagreement of theologians and church authorities over the use of textual and historical criticism in the interpretation of the Bible. Many of the best known philosophers have been agnostics. Among them are Auguste Comte, William James, Immanuel Kant, George Santayana, and Herbert Spencer. BELIEVE

71. Thomas Henry Huxley [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Brief biography of Thomas Henry Huxley, inventor of the term agnosticism
http://www.iep.utm.edu/h/huxley.htm
Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895)
Thomas Henry Huxley, the distinguished zoologist and advocate of Darwinism, madeseveral incursions into philosophy. From his youth he had studied its problems unsystematically; he had a way of going straight to the point in any discussion; and, judged by a literary standard, he was a great master of expository and argumentative prose. Apart from his special work in science, he had an important influence upon English thought through his numerous addresses and essays on the topics of science, philosophy, religion, and politics. Among the most important of his papers relevant here are those entitled 'The Physical Basis of Life' (1868), and 'On the Hypothesis that Animals are Automata' (1874), along with a monograph on Hume (1879) and the Romanes lecture Ethics and Evolution (1893). Huxley is credited with the invention of the term 'agnosticism' to describe his philosophical position: it expresses his attitude towards certain traditional questions without giving any clear delimitation of the frontiers of the knowable. He regards consciousness as a collateral effect of certain physical causes, and only an effectnever also a cause. But, on the other hand, he holds that matter is only a symbol, and that all physical phenomena can be analyzed into states of consciousness. This leaves mental facts in the peculiar position of being collateral effects of something that, after all, is only a symbol for a mental fact; and the contradiction is left without remark.

Welcome Atheism > Atheism > What is agnosticism?
    What is agnosticism?
    What is agnosticism? A definition
Etymology : from Greek agnôstos (ignorant), gnosis = knowledge.
The word agnosticism was created in 1869 by Thomas Huxley, British naturalist (1825-1895) who took inspiration from the ideas of David Hume and of Emmanuel Kant. Agnosticism is a philosophy that declares absolute, divine, metaphysics, and more generally what cannot be grasp by experiment, is inaccessible to the human mind and to perception. Consequently, the existence of God cannot be proven. Agnosticism professes a complete ignorance about the profound nature, the origin and the destiny of things. It is a form of skepticism applied to metaphysics and theology.
Already present in the Ancient Greece, agnosticism developed much in the 18th and 19th centuries because of the progress of science that provided experimental results contradicting the religious dogmas and the Holy Scripture like Bible.
God being unknowable, the agnostic cannot come to a conclusion about his existence and consequently considers that it is useless to worship him or to submit to revealed morals that should have been dictated to men.
Buddhism and Jainism are agnostic religions. Protagoras, Democritus, Hume, Emmanuel Kant, William James, Herbert Spencer, Albert Einstein were agnostic.

    78. Why I Am An Agnostic
The reasons for agnosticism are abundant and compelling. Fantastic and foolish and impossible consequences are freely claimed for the belief in religion.
    http://www.sacred-texts.com/aor/darrow/whyagn.htm
    Why I Am An Agnostic
    Clarence Darrow
An agnostic is a doubter. The word is generally applied to those who doubt the verity of accepted religious creeds of faiths. Everyone is an agnostic as to the beliefs or creeds they do not accept. Catholics are agnostic to the Protestant creeds, and the Protestants are agnostic to the Catholic creed. Any one who thinks is an agnostic about something, otherwise he must believe that he is possessed of all knowledge. And the proper place for such a person is in the madhouse or the home for the feeble-minded. In a popular way, in the western world, an agnostic is one who doubts or disbelieves the main tenets of the Christian faith. I would say that belief in at least three tenets is necessary to the faith of a Christian: a belief in God, a belief in immortality, and a belief in a supernatural book. Various Christian sects require much more, but it is difficult to imagine that one could be a Christian, under any intelligent meaning of the word, with less. Yet there are some people who claim to be Christians who do not accept the literal interpretation of all the Bible, and who give more credence to some portions of the book than to others. I am an agnostic as to the question of God. I think that it is impossible for the human mind to believe in an object or thing unless it can form a mental picture of such object or thing. Since man ceased to worship openly an anthropomorphic God and talked vaguely and not intelligently about some force in the universe, higher than man, that is responsible for the existence of man and the universe, he cannot be said to believe in God. One cannot believe in a force excepting as a force that pervades matter and is not an individual entity. To believe in a thing, an image of the thing must be stamped on the mind. If one is asked if he believes in such an animal as a camel, there immediately arises in his mind an image of the camel. This image has come from experience or knowledge of the animal gathered in some way or other. No such image comes, or can come, with the idea of a God who is described as a force.

    Arguments for Agnosticism
Atheist Quotes : "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence." [William K Clifford] Agnosticism is the view that knowledge of whether or not God exists is unattainable, that we cannot be justified in believing either that God does exist or that he does not. There are two approaches to arguing for this view: first, it can be argued that knowledge of God’s existence is unattainable because no evidence could ever justify religious belief, and second, it can be argued that knowledge of God’s existence is unattainable because evidence of God’s existence is unattainable. One argument of each kind is considered here.
    The Argument from Uncertainty
The argument from uncertainty takes the fact that we cannot achieve certainty as to whether God exists as justification for agnosticism. Whatever evidence there is for theism and for atheism is fallible, the argument suggests, and therefore ought to be rejected. Of course, we accept fallible evidence as sufficient justification for many of our beliefs, so this argument will only be persuasive if there is some reason to require better evidence when answering religious questions than we require in these other cases. One possible reason for so doing is the importance of being right concerning the existence of God.

    http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/7444/
The Case for Agnosticism When engaging in philosphical discussions, especially about the existence of God, agnostics are usually met with much indignation from both the theistic and atheistic sides of the issue. The former usually accuses an agnostic of knowing the "truth," but ignoring it. The latter usually says agnostics are scared of retribution from society, but are atheists at heart. Interestingly, both camps either claim agnostics are on their side or on the opposite side, but few give agnostics proper representation by admitting this view is a third possibility. The problem is that there are many conflicting definitions and uses of the word "agnostic" going around, and when people are in disagreement about it, they are usually using different definitions. The purpose of these pages is to offer a clear, concise representation of the orginal, classical agnostic view, and to examine why it is the only fair and justifiable position on many topics, including the existence of God. Furthermore, essays from several prominent agnostics are offered to give a taste of what agnosticism is like in action. Essays and Other Literary Works
