GOOD SOIL
by Kenneth Ambrose Priebe Luke 8:11-15 says, "The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop." To me that verse is probably one of the truest and most personal that I have yet read, because my story is a good example of it. The truth of Christ faded in and out of my life in different shades and colors until I finally got planted in some good soil. I was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, and was brought up in the United Methodist Church.

But it's not based on any belief or yearning for an afterlife but on the fact that we actually know so little about the cosmos. It is a tribute to the complexity and, at our present stage of development, the unknowability of the universe." "I do not consider it an insult, but rather a compliment to be called an agnostic. I do not pretend to know where many ignorant men are sure - that is all that agnosticism means." "A theory about knowledge and not about religion." If you really need an unbelievably powerful magnet, here it is (ALTG note: scroll down for it) . Uses include magnetic steering of nuclear particles in homemade accelerators Loose metallic objects and other magnets may become airborne and fly considerable distances - and at great speed - to attach themselves to this magnet . If you get caught in between the two, you can get injured. We can only ship this magnet by ground UPS - it cannot be shipped via air as it will interfere with the aircraft's navigational equipment
I don't know why I need this, but I do.

Home About Us Articles Membership ... Site Map ATHEIST FOUNDATION OF AUSTRALIA INC AGNOSTICISM EXPLAINED by David Nicholls Although gnosticism has its roots in the first half a dozen centuries of the Common Era, where its philosophy was selected as an intermediary between Paganism and Christianity, it was Sir Thomas Huxley in 1869 who coined the word agnostic. Gnostic, being a Greek word leaves room for the placing of an 'a' as a prefix to indicate the absence of a quality, opposite or a negative meaning to the original. Atheism and theism are similarly contrived.
A dictionary definition of an agnostic is as follows:
agnostic One who holds that the ultimate cause (God) and the essential nature of things are unknown or unknowable.
Nowadays the common meaning of agnosticism is the simultaneous sitting on the fence of belief and disbelief for the existence of 'God' and trappings. We do not hear of people being agnostic in regard to fairies. There is no evidence for gods or fairies.
There are two distinct classes of agnostics: One is the Atheist, who, not wanting to upset family or friends or fearful of some genuine or presumed ostracism by society, is therefore reticent to openly admit that stand, and the other is the confused thinker. Let us concentrate on the confused thinker.

He was elected to the British parliament six times, and each time that body refused to seat him because he was an Atheist and because he would not swear his allegiance to queen and country, so help him "God." Everyone in England knew Bradlaugh and his fight, and he raised the issue of Atheism to every person in public life as he sought allies. The intellectual community contained, at the time, Sir Thomas Huxley, and he coined the word agnostic in 1869 to keep from aligning himself with the hard-pressed Bradlaugh. The word

Agnosticism and Christianity Collected Essays V De Civ. Dei, xii.7. The present discussion has arisen out of the use, which has become general in the last few years, of the terms "Agnostic" and "Agnosticism." as to the truth of a particular [313] form of Theology, is another. With scientific Theology, Agnosticism has no quarrel. On the contrary, the Agnostic, knowing too well the influence of prejudice and idiosyncrasy, even on those who desire most earnestly to be impartial, can wish for nothing more urgently than that the scientific theologian should not only be at perfect liberty to thresh out the matter in his own fashion; but that he should, if he can, find flaws in the Agnostic position; and, even if demonstration is not to be had, that he should put, in their full force, the grounds of the conclusions he thinks probable. The scientific theologian admits the Agnostic principle, however widely his results may differ from those reached by the majority of Agnostics. He declares that he has prejudged certain conclusions, and looks upon those who show cause for arrest of judgment as emissaries of Satan. It necessarily follows that, for him, the attainment of faith, not the ascertainment of truth, is the [314] highest aim of mental life. And, on careful analysis of the nature of this faith, it will too often be found to be, not the mystic process of unity with the Divine, understood by the religious enthusiast; but that which the candid simplicity of a Sunday scholar once defined it to be. "Faith," said this unconscious plagiarist of Tertullian, "is the power of saying you believe things which are incredible."

The New Agnosticism An old word putting forth new shoots agnosticism is being tugged toward faith by Ben Rutter Imagine that the reasons for belief in a wise and benevolent God could be weighed, summed, and assigned a value. Call this A, and call B the value of views to the contrary; then compare the two. In this way, the mystery of faith arranges itself in a neat stack of possibilities: either A is greater, or B, or neither the two are equal or the question itself stands unsolved, the irrational ratio of two real numbers. We are either theists, that is, or atheists, or else parties to some more learned form of compromise. In general, questions of theology are unlike those found on math exams. And yet the problem of faith has long seemed to me to share with standardized testing the foursquare clarity of multiple-choice. Only lately, in the course of certain conversations with my peers, have I begun to think otherwise. Protagoras was known not only for his balky faith but for the extortionate fees he charged his students. Agnostic Front is not a group of concerned citizens but a loud and menacing rock band. In fact, the only avowed agnostic who has made the papers in recent years was Tim McVeigh, and even he chose, in the end, to receive last rites from a death row priest. Nevertheless, it will surprise me if the mentioned percentage has not grown by the time the next survey is taken. It is not that the faith of the American public appears to be shifting toward indecision. Just the opposite: agnosticism itself is slowly being tugged toward faith.

Bertrand Russell In conclusion, there is a marvelous anecdote from the occasion of Russell's ninetieth birthday that best serves to summarize his attitude toward God and religion. A London lady sat next to him at this party, and over the soup she suggested to him that he was not only the world's most famous atheist but, by this time, very probably the world's oldest atheist. "What will you do, Bertie, if it turns out you're wrong?" she asked. "I mean, what if uh when the time comes, you should meet Him? What will you say?" Russell was delighted with the question. His bright, birdlike eyes grew even brighter as he contemplated this possible future dialogue, and then he pointed a finger upward and cried, "Why, I should say, 'God, you gave us insufficient evidence.'" Agnosticism has had some bad press in recent years. Nonetheless, I hope to show that agnosticism can be so formulated that it is no less philosophically respectable than theism and atheism. This is not a mere philosophical exercise; for, as it happens, the formulated position isI thinkthe one to which I subscribe. I include a qualification here since it may be that the position to which I subscribe is better characterised as fallibilist atheism but more of that anon. I begin by distinguishing between two different kinds of agnosticism. On the one hand, there is strong agnosticism , i.e. the view which is sustained by the thesis that it is obligatory for reasonable persons to suspend judgement on the question of God's existence. And, on the other hand, there is weak agnosticism , i.e. the view which is sustained by the thesis that it is permissible for reasonable persons to suspend judgement on the question of God's existence. Strong agnosticism is characteristically defended by appeal to the apparent lack of good independent evidential support for the claim that God exists. Underlying this appeal there is typically an epistemological principle which resembles the following:

Atheism and Agnosticism (GCSE) : Answers Abstract: The following article explores arguments atheists would use against the belief that God exists. Although atheists may have a wide range of reasons why they do not believe in God, the four most common arguments are explored here. These are, the problem of evil and suffering, Marxism (or an atheist political ideology), religion and science and the problems religions creates in the world. The main aspects of each of these of these are explored and possible Christian responses considered. The article concludes with some thoughts on agnosticism as middle way between theism and atheism. The Origin of the Word Agnostic

There is little doubt that Thomas Henry Huxley invented the word agnostic in the Spring of 1869. However, there is conflicting evidence about when this was and what it originally meant. According to R. H. Hutton, as published in the New English Dictionary , Huxley first used the word agnostic at a party at James Knowles's house on Clapham Common prior to the formation of the Metaphysical Society. Hutton also said, "He [Huxley] took it from St. Paul's mention of the altar to 'the Unknown God.'" ( New English Dictionary edited by James A. H. Murray. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1888, p. 86.) Huxley, on the other hand, wrote in "Agnosticism" published in The Nineteenth Century in February 1889 that he invented it as a label for himself at the Metaphysical Society, although he didn't say when. He also said, "It [agnostic] came into my head as suggestively antithetic to the 'gnostic' of Church history, who professed to know so much about the very things of which I was ignorant...." (Huxley, Thomas Henry. "Agnosticism" The Nineteenth Century . February, 1889, p. 183.)
