American History
A.m.e. Church Stirred into action by the Great Awakening of the 1740s, white evangelical Protestants began proselytizing black Americans. The most successful of these were the Methodists. Their program of systematic evangelism and their emphasis on a "near" rather than "distant" God, self-help, liberation from sin through conversion, and lively preaching and singingalong with John Wesley's denunciations of the evils of slaveryproved tremendously effective in attracting converts among slaves and free people of color. By the time of the Revolution, blacks formed substantial minorities in congregations in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York, and a majority in Charleston. But given the contradiction between the Methodist gospel of a Christianity transcending race and class, and the prejudices among white adherents against black people, tensions soon developed.

    History
The African Methodist Episcopal Zion church, or AME Zion Church, was officially formed in , but operated for a number years before then. The church can be traced back to the John Street Methodist Church of New York City . Following acts of overt discrimination (such as black parishoners being forced to leave worship), many black Christians left to form their own churches. The first church founded by the AME Zion Church was built in and was named Zion . These early churches were still part of the Methodist church, although the congregations remained separate. The fledgling church grew and soon multiple churches were formed based on the original congregation. These churches were attended by black congregants, but ministered to by white Episcopalian ministers . In , six of the churches met to ordain James Varick as an elder. A debate raged in the

    http://www.nyhistory.org/seneca/village5.html
Seneca Village was a stable community. Many people lived in the village for decades, raising their children and going to church. There were three churches in the community: the African Union Methodist Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Branch Militant, and All Angels' Church. There were also cemeteries, a school, and, in 1853, plans to build a second school. The African Union Methodist Church The African Union Methodist Church was the oldest church in Seneca Village, but very little is known about it. In 1837, William Mathews, the deacon, purchased land on 85th Street for himself and for the church. The congregation was composed of African Americans, and Colored School #3 was located in the church's basement. African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Cemeteries The first African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in New York City was chartered (officially recognized) in 1801. A church was built at Church and Leonard Streets, and burial vaults were built in the churchyard.

More on the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church "In the year 1796, when the colored members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the City of New York became increased, and feeling a desire for the privilege of holding meetings of their own, where they might have an opportunity to exercise their spiritual gifts among themselves, and thereby the more useful one to the other, a few of the most intelligent obtained permission from Bishop Francis Ashbury to hold meetings by themselves, in the intervals of the regular preaching hours of our white brethren, in the best manner they could." Bishop Christopher Rush The oldest church of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church denomination was called "Zion" Church. In 1796, Peter Williams, the sexton and congregant of the John Street Methodist Church, led his colored brethren from the church and severed connections with it. These men and women formed a religious body and met in a converted stable on Crosby Street. The church was chartered as the African Methodist Episcopal Church of New York City called Zion (A.M.E. Zion) in 1801. The first Zion church was built that same year in the Fifth Ward at the corner of Church and Leonard streets. The first ordained deacons and elders were Abraham Thompson, James Varick, and Leven Smith.
