History of the African Methodist Episcopal Church
One morning, at St. George's, while prayer was going on Allen heard considerable scuffling and low-talking. As he raised his head, he saw the trustees pulling Absalom Jones and William White off their knees telling them that they could not kneel there. When the prayer was over, the black people, led by Richard Allen and Absalom Jones, withdrew from the St. George's Church Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, William Gray and William Wilcher were appointed to find a lot to build a church where the worship of God could be carried on without interference.
Mother Bethel
The Second Church The frame building was used for eleven years, until 1805, when the roughcast church was erected. The latter was used for 36-years until 1841. The Convention of independent African Churches was held in this building in April of 1816, and the African Methodist Episcopal Church was organized. Richard Allen was elected and consecrated the First African American Bishop. The Third Church The third church building was erected in 1841 of brick. The last service was held in this building on June 16, 1889 during the pastorate of the Reverend Cornelius T. Schaffer, M.D., D.D.

Bethel Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest church of African ancestry in San Diego. Like most churches, it was organized by a visiting minister, Rev. John Handy, followed by a succession of Itinerant pastors.
Bethel has a growing congregation of over 1,800 members, and continues to grow each Sunday as new members join. As was it’s forefathers’ goal over a hundred year ago, Bethel is committed to a life of practical service in the interest of the growth and development of the people, and will continue to instruct and guide its members in the Christian faith. MISSION STATEMENT We will strive to move from a Good church to a Great church through Tithing, Worship, Church attendance, Evangelism and Community involvement and we will not settle for mediocrity.

97. The African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal, Zion And The Chris
The african methodist episcopal, african methodist episcopal, Zion and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches in Indiana. Sheryl D. Vanderstel
http://www.connerprairie.org/HistoryOnline/methepis.html
Life in the 1880's
The African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal, Zion and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches in Indiana Sheryl D. Vanderstel The first of the three main black Methodist denominations began in Philadelphia with Rev. Richard Allen. Born into slavery and converted to Methodism at the age of 17, Allen almost immediately knew he was called to preach. His owner allowed Richard and his brother to join a Methodist class meeting, led by Delaware farmer John Gray. Allen's owner was so taken by Allen's sincerity that he next allowed interracial religious gathering on his property. Finally, converted to Methodism himself, Allen's owner arranged for the Allen brother to buy their freedom. When Allen won his legal victory he issued an invitation to other black ME congregations to assemble in convention. There were sixteen representatives at the convention in Philadelphia, representing churches in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, which joined together to form the African Methodist Episcopal Church in April 1816. They immediately elected Richard Allen as their first bishop. The group determined to adhere to traditional Methodism and adopted a Discipline almost identical to the ME Discipline. The Methodist church had a system of licensed elders, deacons, lay ministers and exhorters to assist in the local church work. This system was adopted not only by the AME but also later by the AME Zion and CME denominations. The bishop headed the church body, which was divided into conferences; each led by a bishop. Each conference then was subdivided into districts. Within a district there could be several circuits. A presiding elder directed the work of the conference. Ordained deacons were the senior circuit riders or local congregational ministers.

We are a Connectional Church, a local congregation of the worldwide African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC). The AME Church, with roots back to 1787 in the United States, has been serving the African-American community from the days of slavery to the present time. Because some misunderstand the meaning of our name we think it not robbery to explain: African - means that the church was organized by people of African descent and heritage. It does not mean that the church was founded in Africa or that it is for people of African descent only. It does mean that those Americans who founded it were of African descent and we proudly recognize this fact. We welcome all who worship Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Methodist - refers to the church's membership in the family of Methodist churches. Richard Allen, the founder and first bishop, felt that the form and format of Methodism would best suit the needs of the African community at that time.
