There are three main schools of thought as far as Vedanta is concerned. These are:
  • Dualistic or Dvaita Qualified Monism or vishistha Advaita , and Advaita Vedanta or Absolute monism.
  • All these Vedantic perceptions are true, and indicate one step higher level of Truth than the preceding one. All the three try to expound the relationship between, individual soul ( Jiva ), this world or nature ( Jagat ), and the Ruler of the universe or God ( Jagdish Dualism , mainly propounded by Madhvacharya, maintains that the individual soul and the Supreme Soul are different and there cannot be unity between the two. The Ruler of this universe is creator, sustainer, and the destroyer of this universe. Nature and individual being can manifest and change, but He remains the same. Moreover, He is the repository of all good virtues. There cannot be anything defective or deficient in God. He is just all powerful, and merciful. We can get his blessings and thereby liberation or salvation from the cycle of birth and death by devotion, faith, and worship. Thus mostly, the path of dualism is path of Bhakti Yoga.

Many a philosopher has 'identified' a problem of contradiction in Advaita System of Epistemology. One of them recently wrote in Prabuddha Bharata, a Vedanta journal of Ramakrishna Order published by Advaita Ashrama Calcutta, India: The contradiction can be identified as, 'Mistaking a rope for snake involves misperception and the snake is supposed to last only for the duration of its knowledge. However, the Advaita theory of perception requires the existence of the object previous to the appearance of knowledge. This is of utmost importance because if the illusory object of perception does not exist prior to its perception it could easily be considered a projection (and not perception!).' 'This is thus clearly a contradiction between Advaitic theory of perception and the Advaitic theory of knowledge. Are we to put this contradiction down to the fact that the theory of perception adopted by Advaita Vedanta is rather crude on the scientific side, or is there a way to resolving the contradiction?'

Definition: Advaita Vedanta is a salvation philosophy ( darshana ) which focuses on helping people to learn that there is only one ultimate reality: Brahman. The word advaita refers to the denial of dualism. The earliest known authority for this sort of teaching comes from the 7th century CE, Gaudapada, but the most imporant authority is Shankara. It has become the most influential school in Hinduism and has even gained some following outside of India. Mind says:
" I cannot possibly awaken. I need more grey hair, an exotic heritage or years of ardent spiritual practise behind me. I need to have been born into poverty, overcome great danger with immense courage. I need the blessing of a master, the recognition of many." I will content myself with providing a brief synopsis of the various aspects of advaita-ved a nta A very important assumption in all ved a nta is that man suffers from bondage in the course of his life in this world. This is said to be sa m s a ra , which involves being caught in an endless cycle of births and deaths. The quest therefore is to seek a way out of this bondage, to break the cycle of rebirths and attain moksha or liberation. The most important issues in ved a nta have to be understood with respect to what constitutes bondage and what constitutes liberation. The advaita school is of the view that j na na (knowledge) of man's true nature is liberation. Bondage arises from ignorance (

Overview: Advaita Vedanta Advaita Vedanta is a school of Hindu religion. Advaita means 'not two'. Thus Advaita Vedanta is a non dual, monoistic doctrine which recognises the Unity of the universe, One, which is called Brahman.
The philosophy of Advaita derives from the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita. Advaita Vedanta combines parts of the Upanishads into one all defining theory. Only the One Thing, Brahman, is real and everything else as illusory (maya).
Advaita asserts that Brahman and Atman (Atman corresponds in western philosophy as soul) are one and the same. This idea is expressed in the Upanishads, 'tat tvam asi (thou art that)'. To summarise, your inner self, your soul is God.
There was no single founder of Advaita Vedanta, but Sankaracarya (Sankara) 700 - 750 A.D. is recognised as an important teacher of Advaita. Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi is a more recent and famous follower of Advaita Vedanta.
    Philosophy of Advaita Vedanta
Philosophy of Religion: Adavita Vedanta Quotes Sankara's system of thought is known as Advaita, a term that classifies it as nondualistic. Its central theme is an examination of the relation between Brahman, the divine power of the cosmos, and atman, the individual human self. Sankara held that reality is ultimately one and that the apparent plurality of the individual selves and entities of empirical existence is illusory: what seems to be an individual self, or atman, is in fact not essentially different from the one Self (Atman), just as the space contained in an individual jug or pitcher is not different from space as a whole. The one Self, he maintains, is identical with Brahman and the aim of the individual human being must be to obtain release from the illusory conceptions of the differentiated self by achieving a full realisation of the identity of Self with Brahman. Enlightenment in Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta:
Are Nirvana and Moksha the Same?
    David Loy
    p. 65 WHAT MOST distinguishes Indian from Western philosophy is that all the important Indian systems point to the same phenomenon: Enlightenment or Liberation. Enlightenment has different names in the various systems kaivalya, nirvana, moksha , etc. and is described in different ways, but the similarities among them are great. Perhaps the most significant is the agreement that enlightenment is intellectually incomprehensible; it cannot be understood or attained through conceptual knowledge, because it escapes all categories of thought. Hence Indian philosophy points beyond itself to a realization which transcends philosophy. This paper will consider one crucial aspect of Indian philosophy: what happens when one attains enlightenment. The experience of attaining enlightenment is not merely one of many aspects which could be examined; it is the most critical one. It is the hinge upon which each metaphysic turns, for in each system it is enlightenment which finally and indubitably reveals the true nature of reality. I shall consider how this aspect is treated in three important Indian systems: Samkhya-Yoga, early Buddhism, and Shankara's Advaita Vedanta. The issue is this: Since enlightenment itself transcends all conceptual understanding, are these different philosophies referring to the same experience? It is difficult not to suspect this. It may be that there are different types of enlightenment, but it seems more likely that various characteristics are stressed because of the differing metaphysical systems within which enlightenment occurs. For example, Samkhya-Yoga may emphasize the isolation from and indifference to the natural world which

The following is a series of answers concerning advaita vedanta where Raphael, Q Could you synthetically express the essence of advaita vedanta?
    http://www.vidya-ashramvidyaorder.org/interview_2.html
Q: Could you synthetically express the essence of Advaita Vedanta?
For Advaita Vedanta Reality must be constant, identical to itself, self-evident, indivisible, infinite, and beyond time-space-causality. In addition, Vedanta probes reality on all systems of co-ordinates or on all levels of Being (from the individual to the universal).
Q: If Brahman is the only reality, then everything else is illusion?
R: What is the meaning of maya?
Q: Can maya be considered as pure illusion?
On the other hand there are two important points we should underline to avoid all too easy misunderstandings: the metaphysics of Non-duality does not require us to abandon, refuse or disown maya as this attitude would still belong to ignorance-avidya. Advaita points out that we should not to create an identification or identity with maya or superimpose maya upon Reality, as this would mean mistaking the rope for the snake.
In addition, a metaphysical vision of life cannot find itself in opposition to anyone or anything, because for it both the phenomenon and the noumenon merge in the One-without-a-second.
We may also add, since we believe this to be of a particular importance, that Vedanta is not after increasing its following; Truth, according to this doctrine, needs no street-criers also because everything in any given time finds itself at its proper place.
