Advaitin List is an electronic Spiritual Forum to exchange
viewpoints on Shankara's Advaita Philosophy. Advaita is
based on Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahmasutras. Shankara establishes the essential identity between Atman and Brahman. Advaita Vedanta holds that all that exists is only Brahman. The entire universe is indeed nothing but Brahman and the individual Atman ultimately merges with Brahman, and realization of this unity is Salvation (Moksha.) A number of national and international institutions have drawn inspiration from this philosophy. The list encourages a wide range of discussion topics focusing on Shankara, pre-Shankara and post-Shankara Advaita Philosophy. The list will support spiritual discussions related to Vaishnavam, Shaivam, Buddhism, Jainism and others. This forum facilitates

American Sage of Vedanta Philosophy

Franklin Merrell-Wolff Franklin Merrell-Wolff was an American living in rural California who documented his spiritual awakening in a journal published under the title Pathways Through to Space . Franklin grew up in California, the son of a clergyman and graduated Stanford University Phi Beta Kappa in 1911 majoring in mathematics with minors in philosophy and psychology. He did graduate work at Stanford and Harvard. He also taught mathematics briefly at Stanford. At this point, he withdrew from the academic world and began his spiritual search. Franklin does not include much additional personal information in his diary. Thus, this biography is more about spiritual experience and contains less background information on his life. In 1937, Franklin had been studying and meditating on the Indian philosopher Shankara’s thought reading his books in English translation. He felt a great affinity with the writings of this sage, and his view of Vedanta. Franklin had also been spending a great deal of time alone as a gold-prospector, and this solitude helped him contemplate and understand the subtle philosophical issues in some depth. He describes his initial spiritual realization as follows:

Also known by a variety of other names, including Ubhaya Vedanta, Bhakti Marga and Prapatti Marga, the greatest thinker of this school is Sri Ramanuja Acarya (1017-1137 C.E.), arguably the greatest philosopher in Indian history. On this web site, we will offer original academic works both explaining the fundamentals of Visistadvaita, as well as going more indepth into some of the more esoteric aspects of this ancient school of thought. In this way, we hope that there will be something on VVH for everyone, irregardless of how conversant they are with Hindu philosophy. Sunyata: Rare-Born Mystic
by Ed Dougal
With just the right voice and page after page of hand-drawn images matched with his own handwriting, the author traces the unusual life of Alfred Julius Emmanuel Sorensen who, though born into ego-consciousness in 1890 in Denmark, never lost the non-dual mystic consciousness of what he called "the Invisible Real." Invited to India "to teach Silence" by the poet Tagore, Brother Alfred, as he was known then, felt a kindred consciousness in India. After much travel, he arrived in the hill town of Almora, where on a high ridge he built a stone hut. It had no running water, no electricity, no heat. What he did have was solitude, pure air and a 23-mile vista of Himalayan mountain peaks. He lived on five rupees a month given to him by a devotee. In researching his book Search in Secret India

Advaita literally means "not two", and is often called a monistic or non-dualistic system which essentially refers to the indivisibility of the Self ( Atman ) from the Whole ( Brahman ). The key texts from which all Vedanta texts draw are the Upanishads (especially twelve or thirteen in particular), which are commentaries on the Vedas, and the Brahma Sutras (also known as Vedanta Sutras ), which is in turn a work discussing the essence of the Upanishads.
Adi Shankara: The Pillar of Advaita
The first person to consolidate the principles of Advaita was Adi Shankara CE (which is the same as 788-820 AD)). Continuing the line of thought of some of the Upanishadic teachers, and also that of his own teacher Gaudapada nondualistic Brahman , in which atman (the individual soul) and brahman (the ultimate reality expressed in the trimurti ) are identified absolutely. The three states of consciousness are subsumed into a fourth transcendental state known in the Upanishads as

Birth and childhood S ankara was born to the Namb u diri Br a hma n a couple, S ivaguru and Ary a mb a , in a little village called Kal ad i in Kerala. The couple had remained childless for a long time, and prayed for children at the Va d akkunn a than (V rsa cala) temple in nearby Trichur. S iva is said to have appeared to the couple in a dream and promised them a choice of one son who would be short-lived but the most brilliant philosopher of his day, or many sons who would be mediocre at best. The couple opted for a brilliant, but short-lived son, and so S ankara was born.

Advaita Vedanta Philosophy - page 1
The Starting Point
Every human being is unhappy. He is discontented. We all feel that something is missing. We want more. No matter how much we possess, it is never enough. We are afraid to die. We want to live longer, be healthier, look younger and accumulate more wealth. We want to increase our knowledge and awareness. We want to experience more joy and happiness. All these lead to unbearable restlessness. Why? The answer lies in the three statements comprising the wonderful formulae given to us by Sri Sankaracharya, the exponent (explainer and clarifier) of advaita vedanta. "Brahma Satyam
Jagan Mithya
Jivo Brahmaiva Na Parah"
which translates roughly as follows: "God alone is real

Advaita Vedanta
Advaita Vedanta was founded by Shankaracharya , one of the most important philosophers in India, and possibly in the world, who is said to have lived during the 8th century AD. Advaita (non-dualistic) Vedanta expounds that our real self ( Atman in Sanskrit) and the Universal, Transcendental Self ( Brahman in Sanskrit) is one and the same. There can be no more simplistic philosophical model of the world than this absolute "monism".

Advaita Vedanta
Advaita Vedanta An introduction to Hinduism's most influential philosophy. ADVAITA VEDANTA is the most influential Hindu philosophy. Like all forms of Vedanta, it attempts to synthesize the teachings of the Upanishads into a single coherent doctrine. Unlike other forms of Vedanta, it teaches that there is only one real thing in the universe and that everything else is illusory. Advaita Vedanta is closely associated with Jñana Yoga, the yoga of knowledge. The concept of maya (literally "magic") distinguishes Advaita Vedanta from other philosophies. Maya creates apparent multiplicity in a universe where only Brahman really exists. People sometimes refer to Advaita Vedanta by other names including nondualism, nonduality, monism, Mayavada, or the Sankara School. People also sometimes abbreviate the name to "Advaita" or "Vedanta." In this article, we'll call it Advaita. The Main Ideas of Advaita Vedanta Only the Atman is aware According to Advaita, only the innermost part of you is aware or conscious. No other part of you can feel or see or know anything. The name in Sanskrit for this awareness is atman. It's the part of you that's really you, and it corresponds to the soul in Western philosophy. Brahman is what really is Now here's where it gets interesting. According to Advaita, your atman (and mine and everybody's) is the same as the underlying absolute reality of the whole universe, which is called Brahman. Brahman corresponds to the Western idea of God, except that it isn't a a super-powerful person. It's impersonal; it's the source of everything; it's what the universe really is.
