Advaita Vedanta
The Indian mystical philosophies and religions are concerned not so much with the manifest reality we see about us, but with the unmanifest Absolute Transcendent . What matters is simply the practical attainment of a state of this universal, transcendent, transpersonal existence. In that state, there is no difference between individual Self (Jiva) and God (Ishwara); there is only the qualityless Absolute ( Nirguna Brahman) . In short, they are not a mental or alalytical philosophy as we understand the term in the West, but rather a conceptual system for guiding yogic practice, with the goal being the complete transcendence of embodied existence. Perhaps the most important school of Indian spiritual philosophy, Advaita Vedanta originates from the writings of Gaudapada and Sankaracharya , who in turn were commentators on earlier scriptures such as the Brahma Sutra , the Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads. As with all Indian systems of thought, Advaita Vedanta is at the same time a school of philosophy, a religion, a theology and a doctrine of salvation It's basic premise is all that all that ultimately exists is the Absolute Reality,

Advaita Vedanta
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Advaita Vedanta is probably the best known of all Vedanta schools of Hinduism , the others being Dvaita and Vishishtadvaita . "Advaita" literally means "not two", and is often called a monistic or non-dualistic system which essentially refers to the indivisibility of the Self ( Atman ) from the Whole ( Brahman ). The key texts from which all Vedanta texts draw are the Upanishads (twelve or thirteen in particular), which are commentaries on the Vedas, and the Brahma Sutras (also known as Vedanta Sutras ), which in turn discuss the essence of the Upanishads.

Roots of Vedanta
All forms of Vedanta are drawn primarily from the Upanishads , a set of philosophical and instructive Vedic scriptures which deal mainly with forms of meditation . "The Upanishads are commentaries on the Vedas , their putative end and essence, and thus known as Vedānta = 'End of the Veda'. They are considered the fundamental essence of all the Vedas and although they form the backbone of Vedanta, portions of Vedantic thought are also derived from some of the earlier Aranyakas The three branches of Vedanta best known in the West are Advaita Vedanta Vishishtadvaita , and Dvaita . Each of these Vedantic divisions was founded by Shri Adishankara Shri Ramanuja and Shri Madhvacharya , respectively. Also of note, historically, in order for a

The Dangers of Pseudo-advaita
BELOW THE INTRODUCTION
FROM A PAPER BY
AZIZ KRISTOF

INTRODUCTION

Although not always thought so as such, Advaita actually falls under the auspices of the three main branches of VEDANTA:
  • Dvaita Vedanta - the dualistic approach
  • Advaita Vedanta - the non-dualistic approach
  • Kevala Advaita Vedanta - the pure non-dualistic school. The main exponent of Vedanta was the great sage Adi Sankara who was an adept of the Kevala Advaita Vedanta path. In western circles it is not unusual to blend the last two together as well as interposing the words Advaita and Vedanta as having the same meaning, becoming in a sense euphemisms of themselves ("satsang" is often included as well). Generally speaking it works OK, but when fine tuning the specifics then a more indepth process is usually required. (source)
    Jerry Katz
, in a further clarification, in his Nonduality FAQ website, presents the following as well:
Advaita means nonduality. Vedanta means "end of the Veda." The Vedas, the most ancient texts of Indian literature, are books on mythology and sacrifice. Their origins are superhuman, their authority divine, the Orthodox believe. The end of the Veda marked the coming of the Upanishads, which are books on the nondual nature of reality, but which offer different levels of nondual understanding, and have even given rise dualism, which says that God and the human body are eternally separate.

ADVAITA VEDANTA Advaita Vedanta is the most well-known school of Indian philosophy. Based on the ancient scriptures, namely the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, and following the rules of interpretation of the Brahmasutras, Advaita Vedanta is at once a school of philosophy, a religion, a theology and a doctrine of salvation. All these roles are only different aspects of the various schools of Vedanta, and Advaita stands as the most important and oldest school of Vedanta.
Advaita Vedanta holds that in the ultimate analysis, all that exists is only Brahman . The vast amount of multiplicity seen in the world of human beings, the diverse kinds of individuals who identify themselves with different names, families, castes and races, indeed the entire universe, from the largest stars to the smallest atom - all this is indeed nothing but Brahman . It is only ignorance of this astonishingly simple, yet complex truth that leads to misery. The individual

    Welcome to the AdvaitaVedanta Website.
On Advaita Website, we wish to present the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta, which has been the mainstream of philosophy in India for most of recorded history. This non-dualist system is represented by the Upanishads before the Christian Era, was restated in the works of Shankara a millennium ago, and has representatives up to the present day. One of these was Dr. Nataraja Guru, founder of the Narayana Gurukula, M.Sc., and D.Litt. (Sorbonne), who we had the privilege to study under during the last five years of his life, and whose work we have attempted to continue ever since. Last Updated ( Wednesday, 07 September 2005 )

Advaita Vedanta In the Sankrit language Advaita means "not two" and Vedanta means "the end of knowledge". So one could say that Advaita Vedanta is the non-dual experience at the end of knowledge, or beyond knowledge. However, in the non-dual state there can be no experiencer and experience and so the term arises, "The Mystery beyond the mind," simply because that That that is beyond the mind cannot be conceptualized much less described by the mind. This mystery refers to the cessation of the experience of duality, the removal of separation between any two objects, the lifting of the veil of illusoryness, the drowning of individualness in the eternal ocean of Love. This Mystery is the Majesty of Saints like Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi of Tiruvannamalai, his disciple Sri H.W.L. Poonja of Lucknow, Ananda Mayi Ma of Haridwar, and Sri Nisargadatta of Bombay. By their words, their touch, their look, and mostly just by their presence these Saints enlighten their disciples. Enlighten is a word that is a gossomer vessel overflowing with sticky concepts. For lack of a better word it is used but realize that any word, any concept, and any Saint is a finger pointing to Advaita Vedanta, the Mystery Beyond the Mind.

    40. Matrix
For example, the above quote by the advaita vedanta Master Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj could have easily been used in the script by Neo s mentor Morpheus.
    http://nisargadatta.net/matrix.html
Within the prison of your world appears a man who tells you that the
world of painful contradictions, which you have created, is neither
continuous nor permanent and is based on a misapprehension. He
pleads with you to get out of it, by the same way by which you got
into it. You got into it by forgetting what you are and you will get
out of it by knowing yourself as you are. I'm sure many have noticed the similarity between Eastern Sprituality, particularly " Advaita " (nonduality)
    and the movie Matrix.
In Sanskrit language Advaita means "not two." For example, the above quote by the Advaita Vedanta Master
    Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
could have easily been used in the script by Neo's mentor Morpheus.
According to an interpretation of Advaita, the mind whether awake or dreaming moves through the illusion (maya=matrix?). Only consciousness is real. You are consciousness.
Nisargadatta's student Ramesh Balsekar explains the core of his Guru's teachings as "the knowledge of one's identity."Then how do you find out who you are? The seeker is he who is in search of himself.
