Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Georg Wittig The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1979 George Wittig was born in Berlin in 1897. His main research was into organic reactions of alkali metals and elaborations of carbon-based chemistry. He made the discovery of the halogen-metal exchange reaction. He also made the development of ylide chemistry and, together with that, the study of the Stevens and Sommelet rearrangements as well as intra-anionic ether isomerisation. Through the synthesis of the pentaaryl derivatives of the elements of group 5, the phosphorous ylides were discovered and also, in 1953, the carbonylolefins which have since proven to be crucial for the manufacture of synthetic fabrics and also important in other industrial processes. George Wittig died in 1987. He was awarded the Adolf von Baeyer Memorial Medal from the German Chemical Society in 1953; Silver Medal from the University of Helsinki in 1957; Silver Medal from the City of Paris in 1969; and the Paul Karrer Medal from the University of Zurich in 1972. He was also recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1979 together with Herbert Brown "for their development of the use of boron-and-phosphorous-containing compounds, respectively, into important reagents in organic synthesis". Life
Tractatus Logico-philosophicus, one of his major works, appeared in 1921 but initially attracted little attention. During the 1920s Wittgenstein came in contact with the so-called Vienna Circle of logical positivists, who were profoundly influenced by the Tractatus (see logical positivism logical positivism, also known as logical or scientific empiricism, modern school of philosophy that attempted to introduce the methodology and precision of mathematics and the natural sciences into the field of philosophy. The movement, which began in the early 20th cent., was the fountainhead of the modern trend that considers philosophy an analytical, rather than a speculative, inquiry. You didn't check the mailing list archives first, did you? :-)

When you will get fed up sufficiently enough you can kill that message adding to fonts.dir in some directory where you have Type 1 fonts a string like that: n019003l.pfb -urw-menu-medium-r-normal0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 Use some other font if you prefer and you have to have a file like 'n019003l.pfb' obviously enough. Do not forget to bump up a font count
