The Wittig Reaction Tutorial link: Organo-Sulphur and Organo-Phosphorous Chemistry This is the formation of double bonds from carbonyl compounds and phosphorous ylids. Stereoselectivity in the Wittig reaction depends on the ylid. Those with anion-stabilizing substituents adjacent to negative charge produce predominantly E - alkenes (thermodynamic control). Those without stabilising groups give predominantly Z- alkenes (kinetic control). The Schlosser Modification of the Wittig Reaction As has been shown earlier, reactive ylides will predominantly afford E -alkenes if equilibration of the erythro and threo betaines can be accelerated. However, it has been shown that addition of another equivalent of the organolithium reagent (used commonly to form the betaine) into the reaction mixture leads to the formation of E -alkenes in a selective fashion. This procedure involves a-metallation of the betaine that is initially formed to afford a ß-oxido phosphorous ylides (betaine ylides). These diastereoisomeric betaine ylides can undergo inversion, even at low temperatures (-78 ºC) and equilibration occurs so as to produce the most energetically favourable stereoisomer. Consequently, quenching with a proton donor to the betaine ylide leads to stereospecific protonation to afford the most stable threo ylide.

Erst vor zwei Jahren wurde Noyori im Rahmen einer großen Festveranstaltung von der Universität Heidelberg mit einer hochdotierten wissenschaftlichen Auszeichnung, der "Georg-Wittig-Lectureship" geehrt. Sie wurde von der BASF an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität zur Förderung hervorragender universitärer Forschung und Lehre als Gastprofessur der Heidelberger Fakultät für Chemie gestiftet und ist nach Georg Wittig, einem Chemie-Nobelpreisträger aus Heidelberg (1897 - 1987), benannt. "Das Direktorium des Organisch-Chemischen Instituts und der Forschungsvorstand der BASF, die 1999 gemeinsam die Auswahl des Georg-Wittig-Preisträgers beschlossen, zeigten schon frühzeitig das richtige Gespür für die Bedeutung der Arbeiten von Noyori im Bereich der Katalyse und der organischen Synthese, für die er zusammen mit W. Signals in plankton We exploit the emerging possibilities in bioorganic chemistry arising from the growing scientific interfaces between chemistry, biochemistry and ecology. Our group elucidates new dynamic defence- and communication strategies of marine and freshwater organisms using the tools of modern bioorganic chemistry. The work aims to understand the regulation of the production and transformation of secondary metabolites. Three major axes of investigation are pursued: i) the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, ii) their storage forms and wound activated transformation and iii) the hormonal regulation leading to their production.
