Nobel Laureate, Hauptman and Colleagues Visit Japan Resulting in New Research Collaboration Dr. Herbert Hauptman, Buffalo's Nobel Laureate and President of the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, along with colleagues and HWI research scientists Drs. David Langs and Hongliang Xu were invited guests at two meetings in Japan to discuss their new methods development research in Neutron Crystallography. The first part of the trip was spent at an International Workshop on Neutron Research at the University of Tokyo and concluded with a satellite meeting at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and Ibaraki University in Tokai, Japan.
Dr. Hauptman along with Drs. Langs and Xu are currently working on the development of new methods for structure determination using neutron diffraction. This project, in its early stages, has the potential to create more powerful techniques for addressing biological problems such as molecular structure determination. In conjunction with this work, HWI's Team will be joining with Dr. Nobuo Niimura from JAERI and Ibaraki University in Japan, Dr. Alberto Podjarny from Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire (IGBMC) in France, and Andreas Ostermann from Technische Universität München in Germany to submit a joint proposal in fund their collaborative efforts in neutron diffraction. Additionally, JAERI is in the process of building a neutron source that can be utilized to apply these new methods once they are developed as well as other experimentation.

Three Young Investigators At Hauptman-Woodward Receive Grants Totaling Over $3.6 Million Drs. Hongliang Xu, Andrew Gulick, and Michael Malkowski, Research Scientists at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, have received funding for three different research projects totaling over $3.6 million. Two of these awards include first time National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for these investigators, while the other represents funding from a major national foundation.
Dr. Hongliang Xu is a Co-Principal Investigator with Professor Nikolas V. Sahinidis from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, on a five-year National Institutes of Health grant totaling over $2 million. The main goal of his project entitled Novel Algorithms for Crystallographic Computing is to develop a systematic methodology for resolving the phase problem in crystallographic computing. This work promises to lay the foundation for a new generation of crystallographic computing systems that will reveal the structure of millions of substances that are important in the understanding of life, materials science, and drug design. At HWI he is collaborating with Dr. Herbert Hauptman, President and Nobel Laureate and Dr. Charles Weeks, Senior Research Scientist.
Dr. Andrew Gulick received a five-year National Institutes of Health grant award totaling $1.4 million for his project entitled, Structure of Peptide Synthetases and Related Enzymes. Dr. Gulick and his research team, Jill Carney, HWI Research Associate, David Nicolai, HWI Research Associate, and Albert Reger, Graduate Student, will attempt to determine the structures of bacterial proteins involved in antibiotic synthesis. In recent years, infectious diseases have become more difficult to treat with antibiotics, as antibiotic resistance becomes an increasing public health problem. Dr. Gulick's research will study the structure and function of certain enzymes that synthesize antibiotics perhaps allowing the engineering of these proteins for the production of a new generation of drugs.

Museum of European Art presents award - First recipient: a native of Hungary - Authored over 500 scientific articles - European sculptor visits Clarence - Plans to develop a Sculpture Garden
The prominent Buffalo physician and medical researcher Dr. Julian Ambrus became the first recipient of the "Heart in Hand" Award, established by the Museum of European Art in Clarence. The presentation of the award was made in the presence of the Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Herbert Hauptman and the inventor of the implantable pacemaker Dr. Wilson Greatbatch, who were joined by some 50 invited guests for the special ceremony. Recalling his young years, Dr. Hauptman expressed his gratitude to his parents who made it possible for him to get a good university education, which made all his later scientific successes possible. "Make an effort to get a good education, it is a basis on which you can build," encouraged the 80-year old scientist the young people in the audience. The question of the importance of good education was also brought up by Dr. Wilson Greatbatch. He is the founder of Wilson Greatbatch Ltd., which now employs over 600 employees. "One of the benefits our emplyees get is free college education for them and for their children," said Greatbatch. "I have tried to encourage other business executives to give their employees this benefit, but as far as I know we are the only company in Western New York that does this. But it has been good for our employees, and also for the company," said the 78-year-old inventor who holds more than 150 patents.

Serious Defects in Proposed NYS Standards for School Mathematics
A letter from Herbert A. Hauptman (Nobel Laureate, Chemistry) and others to New York State Schools Chancellor Carl T. Hayden
August 21, 1997 Honorable Carl T Hayden
Chancellor
New York State Board of Regents
303 William Street
Elmira, NY 14901 Dear Chancellor Hayden: We wish to call your attention to serious defects in the proposed New York State standards for school mathematics. These weak standards will go a long way to destroying what is left of a once excellent program in school mathematics. Some of us gratefully recall the fine Regents programs in high school mathematics consisting in part of algebra, geometry, intermediate algebra and trigonometry, or later, of algebra, geometry, and eleventh year mathematics. Designed for average to above average students in high school mathematics, these courses provided a fine basis for subsequent courses in pre-calculus and calculus. The outstanding success of so many graduates from New York State high schools who received Regents diplomas gives eloquent testimony to the quality of those Regents programs. With some exceptions, the mathematical content of the current Regents sequence, (Courses I, II and III), is already not as rich as that of those older sequences. Just the same, with few exceptions, the mathematical content of Courses I, II and III is better by far than that of the mathematics program outlined in The Learning Standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (Revised Edition, March 1996, The University of the State of New York, New York State Education Department, Albany, NY 12234). Although these standards embrace work from primary school through high school, the focus of this letter will be mainly on the high school mathematics program.

Herbert Aaron Hauptman (1917 - ) American biophysicist who (with his partner, Jerome Karle) developed a mathematical formula to determine the structure of molecules. Through this method, the time needed to work out an atomic structure went from several years to about two days. Their mathematical formula would calculate the angles at which the X-ray beams were deflected. They could then translate the resulting dot pattern into a three-dimensional map of the atoms within the molecule.

Governor George E. Pataki today joined a host of State and local officials and top researchers and scientists in Western New York to celebrate the official opening of the new, 72,000 sq. ft. Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute. The State provided $14 million in funding towards the $24 million construction of the new building, which is a vital component in the effort to create a state-of-the-art life sciences cluster in downtown Buffalo. Hauptman-Woodward Research Institute is one of three partners that comprise the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. The other partners include the University of Buffalo and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, in addition to private investors. "The official opening of the Hauptman-Woodward Research Institute represents another milestone in our efforts to transform Buffalo and Western New York into a world-class center for the research and development of the life sciences," Governor Pataki said. "The new facility will allow the Institute to add new jobs and resources to their current staff. And over the long-term, the groundbreaking biomedical research being done at the facility will serve as a major catalyst in helping to attract thousands of high-tech jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment to the region. "The State was proud to invest $14 million in this new facility, which was truly an investment in the future in every respect," Governor Pataki added. "The biomedical advancements and technology breakthroughs made at the Institute will not only drive the future of Western New York's economy, they will lead to potential cures for life-threatening diseases that will improve the quality of life for people all around the world."
