in full HERBERT AARON HAUPTMAN (b. Feb. 14, 1917, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American mathematician and crystallographer who, along with Jerome Karle , received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1985. They developed mathematical methods for deducing the molecular structure of chemical compounds from the patterns formed when X rays are diffracted by their crystals. Hauptman was a classmate with Karle at City College of New York, from which they both graduated in 1937. Hauptman went on to study mathematics further at Columbia University (M.A., 1939) and at the University of Maryland (Ph.D., 1955). After World War II, Hauptman was reunited with Karle at the Naval Research Laboratory (Washington, D.C.), where they began collaborating on the study of crystal structures. Hauptman became a professor of biophysics at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1970, and from 1972 he was a vice president and the director of the Medical Foundation of Buffalo, a small private research institute. Hauptman and Karle devised mathematical equations to extract phase information from the intensity of spots resulting from the diffraction of X rays deflected off crystals. Their equations made it possible to pinpoint the location of atoms within the crystal's molecules based upon an analysis of the intensity of the spots. Their method was neglected for a number of years after its publication in about 1949, but gradually crystallographers began using it to determine the three-dimensional structure of thousands of small biological molecules, including those of many hormones, vitamins, and antibiotics. Before Hauptman and Karle developed their method, it took about two years to deduce the structure of a simple biological molecule; by the 1980s, using powerful computers to perform the complex calculations needed, one could do it in about two days.

After the war I made the decision to obtain an advanced degree and pursue a career in basic scientific research. In furtherance of these goals I commenced a collaboration with Jerome Karle at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. (1947) and at the same time enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of Maryland. The collaboration with Dr. Karle proved to be fruitful because his background in physical chemistry and mine in mathematics complemented each other nicely. Not only did this combination enable us to tackle head-on the phase problem of X-ray crystallography, but this work suggested also the topic of my doctoral dissertation, "An N-Dimensional Euclidean Algorithm".

Herbert A. Hauptman was born on February 14, 1917, in New York City. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1937 with a B.S. in mathematics, and received his M.A. degree in mathematics in 1939 from Columbia University. After World War II , Hauptman moved to Washington, D.C. to work in the Naval Research Laboratory. At the laboratory Hauptman paired up with Jerome Karle In 1970, Hauptman moved to join the crystallography team at the Medical Foundation of Buffalo. He became a professor of biophysics at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1972, he was elected Research Director of the institution. It was during this period, that Hauptman devised the neighborhood principle and extension concept. Hauptman received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1985 along with Jerome Karle for their work with X-ray crystallography. The following press release from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences describes Hauptman and Karle's work: This year's Nobel Prizewinners in Chemistry, Herbert A. Hauptman and Jerome Karle, have developed what are termed "direct methods" for the determination of crystal structure. This development of a method merits a Nobel Prize since the method now plays an increasingly important role in chemical research. It is therefore of importance to consider the method first.

In 1940, Karle returned to school to the Chemistry Department at the University of Michigan. In 1944, he received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry. Jerome Karle married Isabella Karle in 1942, a physical science student at the University. They worked together on much of their research investigations and scientific efforts. After completing his doctorate, Karle went to work on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago. Later that year, Karle returned to the University of Michigan to work in the Naval Research Laboratory. In 1946, Karle moved permanently to Washington, D.C. to work at the Naval Research Laboratory where, in 1967, he became its head scientist for study on the structure of matter. At this time, Herbert Hauptman joined Karle at the laboratory where they resolved the propositions of crystal structures, which ultimately improved the direct methods of X-ray crystallography and structural analysis.
