Dizziness - Everyone has at some time experienced dizziness in the forms of light-headedness, vertigo, imbalance, or fainting. Most causes of vertigo (a type of dizziness) are due to a problem with the inner ear or specifically, the vestibular system. More than 5 million Americans visit their doctor every year because vertigo is severely interfering with their ability to work or to enjoy everyday activities.
Meniere's Message Board provides support for people who have vestibular disorders, including Meniere's Disease. What happens in the exercise program?
Who is at risk?
Eighty-five percent of people suffering from dizziness or vertigo have vestibular disorders. Because the vestibular structures are closely associated with the hearing structures of the inner ear, many people with vestibular disorders also experience a change in hearing. back to top What causes vestibular disorders?
In people under age 50, the most common cause of serious vestibular disorders is a blow to the head or neck "whiplash" injury, which damages either or both inner ears.
Inflammation of the inner ear, called labyrinthitis, may also cause vestibular problems. People who experience chronic middle-ear infections may eventually sustain damage to the vestibular and hearing structures of the inner ear.
Aging may cause vestibular problems. There is evidence that some parts of the inner ear degenerate as a person grows older, causing dizziness, vertigo and/or hearing loss.

Vestibular Disorders

If you suffer from dizziness, balance loss, nystagmus (rapid, involuntary eye movements), tinnitis (ringing in the ears) or headaches you may benefit from a vestibular rehabiltation program.
Our physical therapy clinics have a well-established program in which we evaluate and treat people with various vestibular disorders including unilateral or bilateral vestibular dysfunction, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and central lesions.
The program includes a thorough evaluation in which we assess the vestibular system, cervical spine, posture and balance. Then an individualized treatment program, including a home program, is designed for you. Visits are scheduled with the intensity and frequency that you need. Many people show dramatic improvement in their condition in as few as two visits and usually in less than eight visits.
If you think you may benefit from this program, consult your physician. (An order from your physician is necessary to participate in this program.)
If you want more information about this program, please call either of our physical therapy clinic locations:
