Symptoms
The most frequently reported symptoms of vestibular disorders are dizziness, unsteadiness or imbalance when walking, vertigo, and nausea. These symptoms may be quite mild, lasting minutes, or quite severe, resulting in total disability. Because the vestibular system interacts with many other parts of the nervous system, symptoms may also be experienced as problems with vision, muscles, and thinking, and memory. In addition, people with vestibular disorders may suffer headache and muscular aches in the neck and back, increased tendency to suffer from motion sickness, and increased sensitivity to noise and bright lights. Patients with vestibular disorders often report fatigue and loss of stamina and an inability to concentrate. Difficulty with reading and speech may occur during times of fatigue. When these symptoms are constant and disabling, they may be accompanied by irritability, loss of self-esteem, and/or depression.
Statistics
Vestibular disorders occur frequently and can affect people of all ages and all walks of life. According to studies from the National Institutes of Health, 90 million Americans (42 percent of the population) will complain to their doctors of dizziness at least once in their lifetime. Balance disorders increase in frequency in the older age groups and by age 75 become one of the most common reasons for seeking help from physicians. In many cases, the cause will lie in the inner ear. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey for 1991, dizziness-vertigo is among the 25 most common reasons Americans visit the doctor. U.S. physicians report a total of more than 5 million dizziness-vertigo visits a year.

Dizziness - Everyone has at some time experienced dizziness in the forms of vertigo, imbalance, or fainting. Most causes of vertigo (a type of dizziness) are due to a problem with the inner ear or specifically, the vestibular system. More than 5 million Americans visit their doctor every year because vertigo is severely interfering with their ability to work or to enjoy everyday activities. There's a special place here at InnerShine for people who have vestibular disorders, including Meniere's Disease. Awareness and widespread support are our goals, and the more we learn how complex our little ears are, the more we can understand and support more research. Click on the menu to the left for extensive information about testing, triggers, diagnosing, and treating Morbus Meniere's.

Vestibular and Balance Testing Laboratory
Forty percent of people over the age of 40 experience dizziness or balance problems at some point in their life. There are many causes for dizziness, but a large percentage is caused by an imbalance or loss within the peripheral vestibular system. If you are seen at Mayo Clinic for a balance or dizziness problem , your physician may order testing in the vestibular/balance laboratory. There are some special cases when these tests provide information related to other problems, such as sudden hearing loss. The following tests are conducted in the laboratory: Posturography This is a test that tells your physician which parts of the balance system you rely on the most and which parts may be giving you problems. You will stand in your bare feet on a special platform and simply keep your balance under various conditions. Electronystagmography (ENG) During this test, your eye movements are recorded because there is an interaction between your eyes, eye muscles, and your inner ear balance system.
