Urethritis is caused by bacteria and may involve the bladder, prostate, and reproductive organs. It can affect males and females of all ages; females, however, are at higher risk. Signs and Symptoms In both sexes, and particularly in women, there may be no symptoms of urethritis. When there are, symptoms include the following. In men:
  • Burning during urination Pus or whitish mucus discharge from the penis Burning or itching around the penile opening
In women:
  • Painful urination Unusual vaginal discharge

Nonspecific Urethritis
Nonspecific Urethritis is an infection to the urethra, which is the urine tube that goes through to pass from the bladder to outside the body. This disease is caused by some bacteria which can be picked up from the rectum or the mouth of your partner. In some cases' people have allergic reaction to latex or spermicide and can get the disease this way. This disease is caused by several other diseases. Symptoms I n men the symptoms can be similar to gonorrhea, but usually milder. The incubation period varies but it is between one week to one month. The discharge form the urethra is thin and clear. In women the symptoms are like those of a urinary tract infection.
If nonspecific urethritis if left untreated in men, it may cause difficulty in urination and perhaps some bleeding. It can also cause the testicles to swell and be tender. If it spreads to the prostate it can cause pain in the groin. Treatment This disease can occasionally be mistaken for gonorrhea, so the doctor will prescribe penicillin which does not treat NSU. It must be treated by tetracycline or another antibiotic

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Urethritis (YOO-ree-THRI-tis) is a swelling and inflammation of the urethra, the duct that drains the bladder. ""Nonspecific'' is the medical way of saying that the exact cause may not be known. Once you begin treatment, the problem should begin to clear up in about a week.
Causes
Nonspecific urethritis is often an aftermath of unprotected sex. It is frequently the result of an infection with bacteriamost often chlamydia (clah-MID-ee-uh)yeast, or other germs. Injury to the urethra by trauma, surgery, or chemicals can cause urethritis. It can also be triggered by bubble baths or bath oils.
Signs/Symptoms
Typical symptoms include pain or burning during urination; a cloudy, white, or yellow-green mucous discharge from the penis; or pain during sex. In men older than 50, urinary dribbling may be a problem.
Care
If the doctor suspects an infection, you will be given antibiotic medicine.

Urethritis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra . The symptoms are dysuria , which is pain (usually burning pain) on urination (micturition). In the diagnostic approach to urethritis, physicians classify the disease as gonococcal urethritis or non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), based on its causation. Non-gonococcal urethritis, sometimes called non-specific urethritis (NSU), has both infectious and non-infectious causes. This medical article is a stub . You can help Wikipedia by expanding it edit

Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) is the preferred term, rather than the obsolete "nonspecific urethritis" (NSU). NGU includes the entity postgonococcal urethritis (PGU), which represents a dual infection with gonorrhea (two to eight days incubation) and the agents of NGU (10 to 20 days incubation). NGU is a sexually transmitted disease due to Chlamydia trachomatis (40 to 50 percent of cases), Ureaplasma urealyticum (30 to 50 percent), or an unknown third agent. Other STD pathogens rarely , if ever play a role. Epidemiology
In the U.S., NGU is about 2.5 times as common as gonorrhea. In overseas military populations, gonorrhea is slightly more common, but the incidence of either may reach several hundred per 1000 men per year. One aircraft carrier study demonstrated that, statistically , each crew member had at least one case of urethritis during a year's cruise. The analogous disease in women is chlamydia endocervicitis, but it may also present as the acute urethral syndrome or dysuria-pyuria syndrome.

(NSU, NGU) What is nongonococcal urethritis (NGU)? NGU refers to an infection of the urethra (the tube running from the bladder through the penis in men or the labia in women through which urine passes) caused by some agent other than gonorrhea. This infection can be caused by any of several different organisms, although the most frequent cause of NGU is a germ called chlamydia, and is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Who gets NGU? NGU is most often found in men since the organisms causing this infection are sexually transmitted and the female urethra is seldom infected during intercourse. Men between the ages of 15 and 30 having multiple sex partners are most at risk for this infection. How is NGU spread?

Urethritis (Non-specific)
What is Urethritis? This condition is caused by a bacteria which can be picked up from the rectum or mouth of a partner. Some experience a discharge accompanied by painful urination, and gonorrhea may be the first diagnosis. NSU does not respond to penicillin and therefore anyone who suspects that they may have it should be tested immediately. What are the symptoms of nonspecific urethritis? The incubation period varies considerably but it is believed to be from one week to one month. The symptoms are usually identical to gonorrrhea however the discharge is usually thinner. Please refer to our section on gonorrhea for a more detailed account of the symptoms. If nonspecific urethritis is left untreated, it can cause complications. It can spread to the bladder which will cause pain during urinating and perhaps some bleeding. It may also spread to the testicles which will result in swelling and tenderness. If NSU spreads to the prostate there will be pain in the groin. How is nonspecific urethritis contracted?

Urethritis may be caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. In women, the organisms generally travel to the urethra from the vagina. In most women, the bacteria come from the lower intestine and reach the vagina from the anus. Men are much less likely to develop urethritis because the opening of the male urethra is far removed from the anus and is not as easily injured during sexual intercourse.

Non-specific urethritis (NSU) is an inflammation of the urethra (the tube where urine comes out) that affects men only. It may also be called non-gonococcal urethritis. It is usually caused by vaginal, oral or anal sex with a partner who already has a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It's called 'non-specific' as a variety of infections can cause it. Other causes include:
  • other genital or urinary tract infections damage to the delicate urethra through vigorous sex or masturbation a urine or bladder infection, although this is rare in young men

Dr Rob Hicks The term NSU represents an infection called non-specific urethritis - a sexually transmitted infection that occurs in men.
In this article
NSU or NGU A common STD in men Diagnosis and treatment
NSU or NGU
NSU causes inflammation of the urethra (the tube in the penis that carries urine from the bladder to the outside), and in almost 50 per ct of cases it's the bacterium called chlamydia that is responsible. Other organisms that may be responsible for causing NSU include:
  • the virus that causes genital warts - human papilloma virus (HPV) the virus that causes genital herpes - herpes simplex virus (HSV) the fungus called candida albicans that causes thrush, or the protozoan that causes trichomoniasis called trichomonas vaginalis
Non-specific urethritis (NSU) is also sometimes known as non-gonococcal urethritis or NGU. This is because although many different organisms may cause the infection, one that does not is Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium that causes gonorrhoea.

NSU is mainly detected in men and is a vague diagnosis. For a start look at what the diagnosis means: the urethra is what men pee out of and anything with "-itis" attached to it indicates inflammation (for example the appendix and appendicitis).
In other words NSU means 'non-specific inflammation from where you pee'. Does that sound very scientific to you? Exactly - it’s a vague diagnosis.
The dilemma is that while inflammation may not necessarily indicate infection, a lot of infections, most notably chlamydia, do cause inflammation. In addition inflammation can be diagnosed on the urethral sample (by looking for evidence of pus cells under the microscope) while you wait, whereas waiting to see if chlamydia is the cause of it takes up to a week. So in effect the doctor’s thought process works like this: "My patient has evidence of inflammation (i.e. has NSU) and I know that NSU can be caused by infections such as chlamydia (40% of the time in fact) but it will take me a week to find out so I’ll treat him with antibiotics now to cover that option and get a head-start". If it turns out that chlamydia is the cause of the NSU (when the result comes back in a week), then there has been no delay in treatment, you’re well on the way to recovery and you should refer to the
