Trichotillomania is a potentially disfiguring behavior disorder characterized by the intentional removal of hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, axillary area or pubic area. It may be accompanied by trichophagy (the ingestion of hair). If trichotillomania is left untreated, further psychologic complications may develop. Epidemiology An estimated 4 percent of the population currently are hair pullers, and approximately 10 percent have had the habit at some time in their lives.(1) Most cases of trichotillomania do not come to the attention of physicians. Mild cases often go unnoticed, and denial of hair-pulling behavior frequently is an associated feature. Patients who pull their own hair often seek dermatologic evaluation.

Back to: Dec 2002 A 4year old girl in our family plucks her hair out and eats it. She has never had a haircut but is completly bald. There is more to her behavior than just pulling her hair out but I will not get into it. It seems to me that this behavior needs some attention. Does anyone have anything to say about it? Please help. worried relative This condition is called Trichotilomania. You can surely find information on the web. It is treatable. Good luck It's called trichotillomania and it's a treatable, obsessive- compulsive type disorder. There's a place in the South Bay, Santa Cruz maybe?, dedicated to helping people with it. Their web address is http://www.trich.org . Get her some help while she's young; maybe it'll be easier to deal with. anon Her condition is called tricatellamania (sp?)...sorry, don't know how to spell it. I have it too and never got treated for it and wished that i did. I had it since I was 15 years old. I've heard that it is more common in women than in men, and it is usually associated with some kind of childhood traumatic experience. I've had some bad experiences from my childhood, but I never talked to a psychiatrist about it to know wether or not it is related. Apparently there is a specific medication that helps with it. One of the symptoms in older children and adults is shame and embarrasment. That is why i haven't seeked out help. I strongly encourage you to speak up or seek help for this child. It could be a sign that something very stressful or traumatic is going on for her. It shouldn't be ignored. My condition was ignored when I was young...a big mistake. I now have areas of my hair that will never grow back. Anon

I am looking for any information about the assessment and treatment of trichotillomania (hair pulling, twisting, removal) in a three year old girl. Her parents are wondering how serious to treat this problem which has persisted for several months. Any advice on appropriate management of this behaviour or recommendations for referrals beyond physician care would be appreciated. Next Article

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is not particularly rare: one person in every thousand can expect to suffer from it at some time in their lives.
Hair pulling People with the condition called trichotillomania feel compelled to pull out their hair. The effects are seen on both the scalp and the upper eyelids. In the affected areas there are hairs of different lengths. When looked at under the microscope they show fractures. Typical cases of trichotillomania, due to repeated pulling out of hairs: the new hairs grow at different rates and therefore different lengths, as can be felt when the scalp is touched

The true trichotillomania sufferer feels a need to pull at and even pull out, One view is that trichotillomania is an obsessivecompulsive disorder

Magazine For Hypnosis and
Hypnotherapy Treating Trichotillomania with Hypnosis
by Tom Connelly FBSCH, FBAMH This fearful sounding name is the label for a problem that few people are aware of and yet paradoxically its sufferers are all around us. There may even be members of your own family in the early stages of this compulsive disorder but its early manifestation may appear reasonably harmless. What is this behaviour that can pass so unnoticed in its early stages yet be so difficult to ignore once it has taken hold?
What causes Trichotillomania? One view is that trichotillomania is an obsessive-compulsive disorder (sometimes called an impulse-control disorder) and as such is a form of 'nervous' illness. Another, that it is entirely a behavioural disorder learned as a reaction to prolonged stress. Another possibility is that the root of this pernicious activity, which seems to begin as a form of self-grooming, is linked to regressive (instinctive) behaviour patterns, as it has been observed in other animals under certain conditions. Interestingly many infants hold onto, or pull their mothers hair when being nursed - so perhaps subsequent personal hair pulling is an attempt to key into this early comfort state? Some theories link this problem with stress but while it may be that high stress levels exacerbate the situation this may not be the originating cause. It is interesting to note the common phrase I was so angry/worried/frustrated I was "pulling my hair out!" As if this was a normal reaction to unpleasant life situations. For many people it is more than a metaphor.

Author's name withheld for privacy reasons) I want to share with you and anyone else who wishes to learn an exciting experience I had on the 24th of August last weekend. I attended and was one of the organizers of this years annual Trichotillomania Retreat membership conference in Massachusetts. Each year adults and children gather in a camp setting to attend educational and experiential workshops on TTM. We laugh, cry, experience, swim, share and heal. It is the most important healing experience in the Trich. community. During breakfast Sunday morning a lady came up and asked me to talk to a participant who had been crying since she registered on Saturday. This person was scared the depressed woman was going to harm herself. I introduced myself and asked if I could attend a workshop with her. We went to one workshop and she continued to cry from the moment I met her through the workshop. I asked if I could see her privately to talk with her. We went back to her cabin and talked. She told me no therapy or medications had helped. She picked her face for hours a day and was up till 3 am most nights stuck picking and staring in the mirror. Her arms were weak. She had been picking most of Saturday night since arriving at the retreat. I asked if I could try my energy balancing work. I corrected a massive psychological reversal and gave her her correction for reversal to stop picking "Even if I never stop picking for the rest of my life and am scared forever", I then helped her elicit her picking urge by staring in her pocket mirror. She got it up to a 5 and we used the CB, UE, CB, UA, CB, 9 gamut and repeat with one mini reversal. She could not elicit the urge after two treatments. She reported her depression gone. She was in shock.
