(From Wikipedia , the free Encyclopedia) Trichotillomania (TTM) is an impulse disorder characterised by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows or other body hair. It is believed to be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Most TTM sufferers live relatively normal lives, except for the shame of having bald spots on one's head. Many clinicianss characterize TTM as a mental disorder: TTM sufferers and some clinicians view this characterization as inaccurate and misleading, as well as conducive to discrimination against TTM sufferers. According to them, TTM is no more a mental disorder than is any other form of obsessive-compulsive behavior such as nail biting; many TTM sufferers have relatively normal work and social lives; and TTM sufferers are not any more likely to be unfit parents or to have significant personality disorders than anyone else. Shaving one's head is a workaround for some. There have been recent clinical trials of drug treatment for trichotillomania, for example using anafranil, prozac, and lithium. One should use care in choosing a therapist who has specific experience and insight into the condition, lest one be overdiagnosed or overmedicated. Prozac and other similar drugs, which some professionals prescribe on a one-size-fits-all basis, tend to have limited usefulness in treating TTM, and can often have significant side effects.

Welcome To Brenda C's Trichotillomania Pages and Message Board!
"I love it and I hate it. I am drawn to it and can't stop. All that exists in the world at that moment is that hair. How could anybody understand such a thing? My compulsion to pull out my own hair?" "But I'm not crazy. Surely someone somewhere out there must do this too. But why isn't it known? If others do it, where are they?" They are here. Welcome! You are not alone! Trichotillomania is described as "an impulse control disorder marked by the pulling out of one's own hair. This can be from your scalp, your eyelashes or eyebrows, or any where else on your body". Those of us who do it hate that we do it, but find it very hard to stop. We like the sensation of pulling, but we hate the end result. We want to stop, but can't seem to do it. It is estimated that at least 10 million Americans alone are affected, and it could easily be higher, as most of us live with this disorder silently. My purpose for creating this web site is to help you, as a hair puller, to feel connected to others. To have someone to talk to who "does it, too." To offer you resources to other trich sites, and to pass on whatever knowledge I might gather over the years.

About the TTM Self-Help Network
We are a grassroots self-help network whose purpose is to provide peer support for adults in the Greater Vancouver area suffering from trichotillomania (TTM), also known as compulsive hair-pulling. Our members include people with diverse backgrounds, ages, education, and interests. Monthly meetings in Vancouver, BC give members an opportunity to come together in a safe and relaxed environment on an equal and voluntary basis. We explore common issues, share experiences, understand past failures, encourage future success, and most of all, accept and support one another. If you have ever felt alone in your struggle with trichotillomania, please consider joining us.
What is Trichotillomania? Trichotillomania is the compulsion to pull out one's hair resulting in noticeable hair loss. Those with TTM may pull from the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, beard, pubic area, or other areas of the body. Tension is often experienced just before pulling or when attempts are made to resist pulling. A sense of pleasure, gratification, or relief occurs when pulling out the hair.

Trichotillomannia: The Disease of Hair Pulling
Vijai P. Sharma, Ph.D
Last couple patients I saw with the problem of hair pulling had no idea that any one else on this planet had the problem of compulsive hair pulling.
The problem of compulsive hair pulling is as old as human hair. In the Book of Ezra in the old Testament of the Bible, Ezra describes hair pulling in the verse 9:3 "and when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard." In India, we have an age-old expression which translates as, "I got so frustrated, I plucked the hair of my head." Hair plays an important role in the expression of our emotion. Take for example, the positive emotions: in love and friendship human beings touch and comb each other's hair, a universal behavior which anthropologists call as "grooming." Monkeys and apes spend a lot of time in grooming one another's hair. Nowadays people use hair spray and other devices to set their hair, so, grooming is confined to admiring one another's hairdos or, in some cases brushing and combing the hair of the person you love. Sometimes we are just content with brushing aside hair we see on each other's jackets. In anger and frustration, one either wants to pull and pluck the hair of the person one is angry with or if that option is not available for fear or other considerations, one wants to pull and pluck the hair of one's own. Either way, it appears that hair pulling is an instinctive behavior that we normally learn to control and suppress as we mature. However, there are many life circumstances that may interfere with the development of such a control in the case of many individuals.

A.
Compulsively pulling out your own hair is called Trichotillomania. It's a nervous habit that usually begins in childhood. Although many people grow out of it, others grapple with the disorder well into adulthood. The constant pulling produces ragged patches of thinning hair on the scalp, as well as the eyelashes and eyebrows.
