two neurologists. We were told that the chances of him having more of these "attacks" were slim to none and that there would be no lasting side effects. Now, 4 years later he has had 6 attacks and cannot form a complete sentence. His doctor simply says that it is one of the side effects. Could this be something else? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Transient Global Amnesia
Transient global amnesia (TGA), a syndrome characterized by abrupt loss of ability to recall recent events, can last from 1 to 24 hours. The patient is amnesic for the episode, and there is usually also a short period of retrograde amnesia. During the episode, the patient can carry on complex motor activities and even do mental arithmetic, including the serial 7s test. Speech is usually unimpaired. Indeed, the casual witness may note no abnormality of behavior.
Fisher and Adams coined the label for this entity in 1958, [1] and their definitive monograph appeared in 1964. [2] In an excellent 1985 paper, Kushner and Hauser [3] provided the following diagnostic criteria: * Acute onset of disturbed recent memory * A variable period of retrograde amnesia * Preservation of immediate recall * Preservation of remote memory * Resolution of all deficits, generally within 24 hours * A residual period of amnesia after the attack * Absence of a Tools: Save Article

Perfusion- and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in transient global amnesia To the Editor:
We read with interest the report by Ay et al. [1] regarding diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in transient global amnesia (TGA). We have also studied a case of TGA with DWI, but found no abnormalities on the DWI or its quantitative expression, the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) images.
