Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder Tourette Syndrome (TS) is widely associated with inappropriate swearing in public. In fact, it is a complex and debilitating neurological disorder which is estimated to affect about 1% of the population. What are the symptoms of Tourette Syndrome? The most common symptom are repetitive, rapid, sudden movements called tics. Tics, which can be verbal or physical, come in a broad range of types. They are defined in two broad categories:
  • Simple tics: including shoulder shrugging, eye blinking, tongue clicking, and sniffing.
  • Complex tics: including jumping, twirling about, uttering words out of context, inappropriate swearing, and echolalia (repeating a sound, word, or phrase just heard).
In relatively rare instances, people with TS may bite or hit themselves. There is no one single pattern of symptoms. Some people have very mild symptoms, whereas for others the symptoms may be very severe. By and large, these symptoms are outside the control of the sufferer.

    Tourette Syndrome
What is Tourette syndrome? Tourette syndrome (TS) is an inherited disorder of the nervous system characterized by repeated involuntary movements and uncontrollable vocal (phonic) sounds called tics. In a few patients, such tics can include inappropriate words and phrases. The disorder is named for Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette, a French neurologist who first described an 86-year-old French noblewoman with the condition in 1885. (See History below.) The symptoms of Tourette syndrome generally appear before the individual is 18 years old (some authorities say before 15 years of age). Who develops Tourette syndrome? Tourette syndrome can affect people of all ethnic groups. However, the distribution of males and females with Tourette syndrome is far from even. Males are affected 3 to 4 times more often than females. How common is Tourette syndrome?

yes no Tourette syndrome: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome This is a condition characterised by multiple tics. Tics are involuntary twitch-like movements involving groups of muscles. In this syndrome, tics characteristically involve the facial area (e.g. blinking, grimacing, nodding) as well as phonic (vocal) tics, although any area can be involved. The tics range from very simple to more complex, purposeful movements. Vocal tics can be as simple as throat clearing or coughing. Tics can be suppressed for a short time and so, for example, the condition may appear different at school compared to home. The onset of the symptoms is usually between the ages of 5-11 with a maximum starting age of 21. There is a very wide range of severity so that many people with the condition may never need to seek medical attention whilst others have a socially disabling condition. Common associations of the syndrome are Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Behaviour (OCD/OCB) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (see entry.) In some cases echolalia (the repetition of phrases, or mimicking of gestures) may be present. A relatively rare feature in more severe cases is coprolalia (the involuntary use of obscene or offensive words) or copropraxia (the involuntary making of obscene gestures.)
