What is Tourette Syndrome?
Tourette Syndrome is an inherited, neurological disorder characterized by repeated and involuntary body movements (tics) and uncontrollable vocal sounds. In a minority of cases, the vocalizations can include socially inappropriate words and phrases called coprolalia. These outbursts are neither intentional nor purposeful. Involuntary symptoms can included eye blinking, repeated throat clearing or sniffing, arm thrusting, kicking movements, shoulder shrugging or jumping. These and other symptoms typically appear before the age of 18 and the condition occurs in all ethnic groups with males affected 3 to 4 times more often than females. Although the symptoms of TS vary from person to person and range from very mild to severe, the majority of cases fall into the mild category. Associated conditions can include obsessivity, attentional problems and impulsiveness. Most people with TS lead productive lives and participate in all professions. Increased public understanding and tolerance of TS symptoms are of paramount importance to people with Tourette Syndrome.

The Organization
The Tourette Syndrome Camp Organization (TSCO) is a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization dedicated to promoting camping opportunities for children with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and its associated disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD).
The Program
The Tourette Syndrome Camp USA, founded in 1994, is a residential camping program designed for girls and boys ages 8 - 16+ whose primary diagnosis is TS, and to a lesser degree, OCD and ADD/ADHD.
The goal of the camp is to allow children with TS an opportunity to meet other children, share similar experiences and coping mechanisms in a fun, safe and positive environment.
The TS camp is run concurrently with a traditional camp week. While there are separate cabins for the TS campers, all programming is done with the rest of the camp. However, we do hold rap sessions with the TS campers so they have an opportunity to share their experiences with each other.
There is a nurse to handle medication and medical issues for the TS campers.

Unlike the common childhood tics that usually vanish within a year, the tics of Tourette's last and last. Tourette tics usually begin between the ages of 5 and 7, peak around age 10, and by age 18 they might begin to diminish. Some patients, however, have them for life. The tics are involuntary. Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that some people make, seemingly without realizing it. Tics are actually more common in teens than you might think. You may know someone who has either Many people have tics that go away in less than a year or mild tics that don't interfere with their lives. But in some kids, tics are more severe or long lasting. If a child has tics for more than a year, it is called a chronic tic disorder. In some cases, these tics can be part of a condition called Tourette Syndrome. Though there is no treatment or cure for Tourette Syndrome, the tics associated with it tend to get milder or go away entirely as kids grow into adulthood. Until that happens though, there are a lot of steps that you can take to help you and your child cope with the condition. What Is Tourette Syndrome?
Tourette syndrome (TS) is named for the French doctor Georges Gilles de la Tourette, who first described the condition in 1885. It is a genetic condition, that's either inherited (passed on from parent to child) or happens during development in the womb. Doctors and scientists don't know the exact cause of TS, but some research suggests that it occurs when there's a problem with how nerves communicate in the brain. Neurotransmitters - chemicals in the brain that carry nerve signals from cell to cell - may play a role in TS. Tourette syndrome is not contagious.

The Mystique of TS
Diagnostic Criteria
Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder resulting from a chemical imbalance in the brain. There is currently no medical test that will clinically diagnose TS.  It is therefore diagnosed by the presence of four very observable diagnostic criteria which I will list and expand upon in this article.  These diagnostic criteria are as follows:
  • Multiple motor tics Vocal tics Waxing and waning of symptoms Childhood onset of symptoms
  • Motor tics: A vocal tic can be defined as the repeated uttering of a sound, word or phrase.  Vocal tics can be as simple as a constant sniffing or throat clearing.  It could be a squeak, a snort, a howl, a bark or a word or phrase that is repeated over and over.  A boy diagnosed with TS whom I currently teach makes a series of snorts and animal sounds.  He also repeats phrases such as "chickens are fuzzy, chickens are fuzzy" and "I have a chicken in my pants."  Unfortunately, anyone who knows anything about TS knows of the vocal tic that takes the form of inappropriate language.  This is known as coprolalia.  It does exist and can certainly be a part of Tourette, but is not necessary for a diagnosis.  It actually occurs very infrequently with people with TS.  It usually takes the form of curse words, but could be anything inappropriate such as ethnic slurs or comments on a person's appearance, such as "you're bald, you're fat."  My student's "I have a chicken in my pants" could be classified as coprolalia.  In my classroom where we all understand Tourette, it is simply ignored.  In the real world, this certainly would not be the case.

    • My name is Leonard Misner and on June 21, 1999, at 31 years old, I was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome ( TS ), A.D.H.D. and OCD. Going forward, upon completion, this site will be dedicated to the education and help to those affected with T.S. Thanks to modern medical technology, the doctors have pinpointed the exact date I contracted T.S. 10-23-1967. the day I was born. It is hereditary passed on through generations affecting some and skipping others. Some people inherit the family fortune, I got T.S. Actually I am relieved, I can now put a name to the problems I've had all my life.
    • About 4 or 5 out of every 10,000 people in the world have T.S.There are two types of tics. Motor and vocal. Most people with TS suffer from both to some extent. Most of my tics are in my arms, neck and head.

There was a time when school psychologists encountered only one or two cases of Tourette Syndrome (TS) during their entire career. Times have changed, and tics are on the rise. According to a Rochester study published in Neurology last fall
    Environmental Factors
ACN reports that sensory hypersensitivity is common in youngsters with TS. These children may complain that bright lights, clothing (like tags in shirts or certain fabrics), chemical odors, or heat can aggravate their tics. A study on TS last year showed that when room temperature was raised just 7 degrees, 24% of the subjects experienced increased tics (Scahill et. al., 2001). Further, exposure to certain foods (Gerrard, www.Latitudes.org ), or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the address at the end of this article.    ACN urges that broad-based environmental factors be examined by the research community to determine why such large numbers of children are now vulnerable to the development of tics and TS.
