Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that some people make, seemingly without realizing it. Tics are actually more common in teens than you might think. You may know someone who has either Many people have tics that go away in less than a year or mild tics that don't interfere with their lives. But in some kids, tics are more severe or long lasting. If a child has tics for more than a year, it is called a chronic tic disorder. In some cases, these tics can be part of a condition called Tourette Syndrome. Though there is no treatment or cure for Tourette Syndrome, the tics associated with it tend to get milder or go away entirely as kids grow into adulthood. Until that happens though, there are a lot of steps that you can take to help you and your child cope with the condition. What Is Tourette Syndrome?
Tourette syndrome (TS) is named for the French doctor Georges Gilles de la Tourette, who first described the condition in 1885. It is a genetic condition, that's either inherited (passed on from parent to child) or happens during development in the womb. Doctors and scientists don't know the exact cause of TS, but some research suggests that it occurs when there's a problem with how nerves communicate in the brain. Neurotransmitters - chemicals in the brain that carry nerve signals from cell to cell - may play a role in TS. Tourette syndrome is not contagious.

Mark is 10 years old, and he gets noticed a lot - but not for his cool skateboard or new sneakers. Mark gets second looks from people because he twitches, shrugs, jerks his shoulders, and flexes his jaw. He can stop doing these things, but not for long. "One time," Mark says, "some kid asked me why I was moving like that. Before I could answer, another kid said, 'Because he's weird.' " But Mark isn't weird. He has a condition called Tourette syndrome. What Is Tourette Syndrome?
Tourette syndrome affects the central nervous system and causes tics. Tics are movements or sounds that are repeated over and over. People with Tourette syndrome have very little control over the unwanted twitches, movements, or noises that they make. If you are having trouble imagining what tics are like, they're kind of like hiccups. You don't plan them and you don't want them. You can try tricks to make the hiccups stop, like drinking water upside down, but you can't just decide to stop hiccuping. Hiccups that last too long can even start to hurt and feel uncomfortable. Tics can be like that, too. Tics are also a little like "scratching an itch." You don't really want to scratch the itch, but you just can't help it.

Hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Catherine Ann Lambe-Swanson, I am 39 years old, and hail originally from Tonawanda, NY. At the age of 2 months I was given up for adoption, and until 10May87, I had no idea who I was. On that day, I found my natural mother, and thus found "myself"! Thank You Mom! I have been diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, on 04May1998. I inherited it from my natural father. I also have Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder and Chronic Depression (aka Dysthymic Disorder). My youngest son Dennis has Tourette Syndrome His Tourette was also inherited, from myself and his father. Currently, I make my home in Titusville, FL and am trying to get a new TSA chapter up and running here in Central FL, in addition to the international TouretteSupportGroup I run on the internet every Sunday night.
The reason I am doing this page is in the hopes that people will come and get information that the public and private sectors both are so reluctant to offer people with Tourette+. This page will be subject to constant revision as my trek through the Internet yields more and more information. Happy Browsing! Please sign my guestbook at the bottom of the page here and give me some feedback! Or Email me.

Happy Birthday Mr. Helton!
As consistently as the President of NASCAR has birthdays (on an annual basis, just like the rest of us) I step up and publicly wish him a happy one. Now there are some NASCAR fans out there that find that odd, or even downright ridiculous. I do not know what the hard statistics are (and doubt they even exist), but I am fairly certain Mike Helton does not please everyone, and those that aren’t impressed with him would rather decline a ticket to a Bristol night race than wish Helton a great birthday.

Tourette Syndrome
Introduction
Research Paper Abstracts Research Paper Titles Introduction The diagnostic criteria for Tourette Disorder or Tourette Syndrome (TS) are motor and vocal tics. Tics are usually sudden movements or sounds. The most common motor tics are eye squinting, facial grimacing or head shaking. Common vocal tics are throat clearing, lip smacking or sniffing. The typical age for these tics to begin are 4 or 5 years of age. Boys have the disorder 3 to 9 times more frequently than girls. In most cases the disorder peaks in severity at 10-12 years of age. In about 25% of patients the disorder does not improve until adolescence. In 10% of patients the disorder is severe and persists through adulthood. Medication is often helpful in patients with moderate to severe tics or tics which are severe or unacceptable. The book Children with Tourette Syndrome provides management suggestions for parents and teachers.
