Hyperthyroidism; Thyroid nodules and swellings; Diagnosing thyroid disorders; ... Thyroid disorders and pregnancy Women are more likely than men to suffer from thyroid problems, which can cause depression and tiredness The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland you can feel at the base of your neck, just below your Adam's apple. Two lobes - the butterfly 'wings' - fit to either side of your windpipe. This gland is one of the most important in your body as one of the hormones it produces regulates the body's metabolism. The thyroid advertisement
gland is a manufacturing and storage facility for thyroid hormone, which is often referred to as the body's metabolic hormone. Among other actions, thyroid hormone stimulates enzymes that combine oxygen and glucose, a process that increases the basal metabolic rate and body heat production. Thyroid hormone also helps maintain blood pressure, regulates tissue growth and development, is critical for skeletal and nervous system development and plays an important role in the maturing of the reproductive system. Women are five to ten times more likely than men to have thyroid dysfunction and some types of thyroid disease run in families. Although many women get thyroid disorders, doctors often fail to recognise it because the wide variety of symptoms are similiar to other illnesses.

Overview Introduction
Hormones
are named from the Greek word hormon , meaning "to urge or excite", because they were first discovered to play a role in hunger, sex, flight-or-fight response, and many other basic drives. Hormones serve within the body as invaluable messengers, governors of development, and regulators of metabolism. This Hot Topic will focus on the effects of thyroid hormone (TH) and the disorders that are associated with TH imbalance. TH, found in all chordate animals, is the only major biochemical molecule known to incorporate iodine , a substance common in the sea but rare on land. Iodine is essential to the structure of TH, and iodine deficiency is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in undeveloped countries. TH is produced by the

The Effects of Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism on Menstruation

by Mary Shomon

Many menstrual problems may be symptoms of undiagnosed thyroid conditions. Girls who have either very early or very late menstruation should be evaluated for a potential thyroid problem, as thyroid problems can frequently be a cause of early or delayed puberty and menstruation. In addition, any change in menstrual patterns - such as more or less frequent periods, the onset of substantially heavier or lighter periods, or the lack of periods entirely, should trigger a thyroid evaluation by your physician.
Thyroid disease is frequently the reason behind problems with a woman's menstrual cycle.
The linkage between thyroid disease and the menstrual cycle is not well understood by medical professionals, but there are some established linkages between menstruation and thyroid disease that are well-established.
Early Menstruation / Precocious Puberty: Hypothyroidism in girls may trigger very early menstruation, i.e., before the age of 10. This early puberty is known as "precocious puberty." Occasionally, if hyperthyroidism occurs very early during puberty, menstrual periods may also begin earlier than usual.

  • Overview . A severe life-threatening form of hyperthyroidism.
  • Cause . Increasing stress such as trauma or illness may cause this in a previously mildly hyperthyroid patient.
  • Clinically . Have signs and symptoms consistent with thyrotoxicosis (tachycardia, heat intolerance, weight loss), as well as fever, confusion, agitation, weakness, dyspnea, diarrhea, and shock.
  • Treatment
  • When suspected, treatment should be instituted immediately. If defervescence of fever does not occur within several hours, concurrent infection should be suspected. Other signs of hyperthyroidism may require several days of therapy before improvement is seen. Treatment is propranolol 20 to 40 mg Q4h to control tachycardia, tremor, etc. (can give 0.5 to 1.0 mg IV Q5min to keep pulse about 100; may need greater than 15 mg IV). Give propylthiouracil 250 mg PO or per NG Q6h (alternative is methimazole 20 to 40 mg PO or per NG Q6-8h) and SSKI 30 gtt PO 1 hour after giving PTU to avoid iodine being used for additional thyroid hormone synthesis. Continue with 5 to 10 gtt QID. Alternative is 0.5 g of sodium iodide in 1 L of NS over 12 hours. Fluid and electrolytes should be replaced and fever controlled with acetaminophen and a cooling blanket.

    Postpartum Thyroiditis
A woman's immune system is suppressed during pregnancy, but becomes more active following delivery of a baby. If you have a genetic tendency toward autoimmune thyroid problems, you may experience a painless inflammation of the thyroid as your immune system becomes more active in the months after delivery, even if you have no history of thyroid problems before or during pregnancy. Related Articles In its early stages, hyperthyroid symptoms may occur if excessive amounts of thyroid hormone leak into the bloodstream from your inflamed thyroid gland. Later on, when the thyroid's supply of hormones is exhausted, blood levels of these hormones often fall below normal and symptoms of hypothyroidism may appear. Beta adrenergic blocking drugs like propranalol, atenolol, and metoprolol are usually enough to control the symptoms if you develop hyperthyroidism in the early weeks of this condition. If your thyroid fails after several months, supplementary thyroid hormone tablets can be given to maintain blood levels in the normal range.

Disorders Affecting the Thyroid The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck and below the larynx (voice box), plays an important role in regulating the body's metabolism and calcium balance. The small, two-inch gland consists of two lobes, one on each side of the windpipe, connected by tissue called the isthmus.
The thyroid tissue is made up of two types of cells: follicular cells and parafollicular cells. Most of the thyroid tissue consists of the follicular cells, which secrete iodine-containing hormones called thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine, or T3 (both hormones secreted by the thyroid which regulate metabolism). The parafollicular cells secrete the hormone calcitonin. The thyroid needs iodine to produce the hormones. Levels of hormones secreted by the thyroid are controlled by the pituitary gland's thyroid-stimulating hormone, which, in turn, is controlled by the hypothalamus.
A thyroid disorder may be congenital (present at birth), or develop later in childhood. With proper treatment, which usually involves hormone replacement therapy, most thyroid disorders can be successfully managed in children.
Listed in the directory below, you will find some additional information regarding disorders that affect the thyroid, for which we have provided a brief overview.

HYROID is one of the endocrine glands along with pituitary, para-thyroids, adrenals, gonads (testis and ovaries) and pancreatic islets (producing insulin). The brain through its hypothalamus has further control over the pituitary. The word endocrine was coined by the famous physiologist, Starling, for those glands which pour their secretions directly into the blood and not into the duct or lumen of an organ. The products of these organs are known as hormones which in Greek means "to set in motion" and this is an appropriate description of these chemicals because they set in motion their important cellular and physiological processes and their secretions are controlled by a feedback mechanism of the glands.

The gland produces thyroid hormone in response to stimulation by a hormone from the pituitary gland. Thyroid hormone acts throughout the body to regulate metabolism. Thyroid diseases can be broadly divided into the following categories:

If you ever wonder why doctors seem to be so in love with particular brands of drugs, and why they don't seem to know about options available, but focus in on one brand, wonder no more. In fact, the proof has actually been published in a peer-reviewed, respected medical journal, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) no less. What JAMA reports in this week's issue is that third-year medical students receive, on average, one gift or attend one activity sponsored by a pharmaceutical company PER WEEK
