There is an increase in frequency of bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depressive disorder) among patients with autoimmune thyroid problems. If you or someone in your family has manic or hypomanic episodes manifested by days or weeks of feeling hyperactive, excitable, and euphoric followed by days or weeks of depression with significant fatigue and sleep or appetite disturbances that may interfere with your normal activities, your physician may offer you medication to control your mood swings and treat your bipolar disorder. Your physician will likely measure your thyroid hormone within two to four weeks after starting Lithium. But if a psychiatrist starts your Lithium he or she may not know that you have a thyroid problem. Therefore you should be sure to tell the doctor that you do have a thyroid disorder and need your thyroid level checked to be sure there is no effect of the Lithium on thyroid hormone production.

Hypothyroidism is treated with thyroid hormone replacement therapy, which is taken in pill form once a day. Most patients are treated with a form of thyroid hormone called T4 or levothyroxine. Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid and Unithroid are the brands of T4. Some patients also require a different thyroid hormone called T3 or liothyronine. Cytomel is the brand name of T3. An older preparation called desiccated or Armour thyroid is still sometimes used and this contains both T4 and T3.
Once you begin treatment, you will take this therapy for the rest of your life, unless your hypothyroidism is in the setting of subacute thyroiditis. Your doctor will monitor your dosage over the course of your therapy by means of a blood test, and may re-adjust your dose periodically. The goal of treatment is to bring your levels of thyroid hormone (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) into balance.
Subclinical hypothyroidism
There is controversy in the medical field about whether or not to treat mild hypothyroidism with daily intake of thyroid hormone, or to carefully monitor the condition by means of an annual blood test. At Virginia Mason, your doctor may or may not choose to treat your condition but will check your levels of thyroid hormone (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) periodically with a blood test. This is done to ensure that your condition is not worsening.

Through this site we plan to keep you informed of the activities of our growing organization and the development of existing and future thyroid member organizations in the world. The Thyroid Federation International first convened in Toronto at the 11th International Thyroid Congress in September 1995. The vision of a world thyroid organization to deal with the problems of thyroid disease in a global perspective was first advocated by Diana Meltzer Abramsky, C.M., B.A. who in 1980 founded the Thyroid Foundation of Canada in Kingston, Ontario Canada - the first lay thyroid organization in the world. Since then, the idea has received enthusiastic support and leadership from Dr. Lawrence C. Wood of the Thyroid Foundation of America, the Federation's first president. Starting from a base of six member organizations, the Federation has grown to include thyroid organizations in many parts of the world, including Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. Our main objective is to assist all those interested to start a thyroid patient organization in their country or locale. For more information see:

http://www.diseases-explained.com/ThyroidDisorders/whatcausesthyroid.html
HYP ER THYROIDISM is most commonly attributed to an autoimmune disorder known as Graves' Disease Autoantibodies (antibodies that attack an individual's own tissues) stimulate the Thyroid Gland to produce excessive amounts of hormone. Another type of Hyp er thyroidism is known as Plummer's Disease Toxic Multinodular Goiter ). Some of the Thyroid nodules fail to respond to the body's normal chemical messages, which results in an overproduction of the thyroid hormone. In some cases, Hyp er thyroidism results from taking excessive amounts of an intravenous Thyroid Replacement medication, or from a medication which alters thyroid function. HY PO THYROIDISM is caused predominantly by Hashimoto's disease (autoimmune thyroiditis) In some cases, environmental toxins , such as halogens heavy metals , or other compounds, may contribute. Many individuals become Hypothyroid as a result of the surgical, or chemical treatment of Hyperthyroidism , iodine deficiency, and tissue unresponsiveness to thyroid hormones. Some forms of Thyroid disorders may also be caused by a specific type of medication.

Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism What you need to know:
The thyroid is a gland that is located in your neck, in front of your windpipe. It makes hormones that affect the workings of many of the body’s organs. About 2 percent of pregnant women have a thyroid disorder, though many have no symptoms. In some cases, the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism); in others, not enough (hypothyroidism).
An untreated thyroid disorder during pregnancy can be harmful to both mother and baby. But with proper treatment, most women with thyroid disorders can have a healthy baby.
What you can do:
If you have a thyroid condition (either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism), see your endocrinologist and the health care provider who will take care of you during your pregnancy. It is best if you do this before you are pregnant. If you are already pregnant, continue taking your medication and talk to your provider as soon as possible. While the medications used to treat thyroid conditions are generally safe to take during pregnancy, your blood levels need to be monitored and the amount of medication you take adjusted as your pregnancy progresses. At this time, health care providers do not routinely perform thyroid screening for women who are planning to get pregnant or who are newly pregnant. If you think you might have a thyroid condition (see below for symptoms), ask your provider if you should be tested. Thyroid disorders are generally diagnosed with a blood test.

Heart Threatening Illnesses
Overview
Heart threatening illnesses are different than heart diseases because they dont involve a disorder or disease of the heart itself. However, these conditions can significantly impact heart health or may lead to heart disease over time. For instance, thyroid disease can lead to heart disease, abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart failure. Kawasaki disease affects young children and may damage heart vessels. Marfan syndrome is a rare genetic disease that increases the risk of heart attack or sudden cardiac death. Rheumatic fever often involves heart inflammation while HIV infection increases the risk of infections of the heart, such as endocarditis. People with heart disease are at greater risk of heat related illnesses (e.g., heat stroke, heat exhaustion).

Phytoestrogens
Anti-thyroid agents
We're sick of hearing that there are no harmful effects of phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens disrupt thyroid function. (Read the British Food Standards Agencies Committee on Toxicity Report Here) Theodore Kay of the Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine noted in 1988 that 'thyroid enlargement in rats and humans, especially children and women, fed with soybeans has been known for half a century'. In fact, thyroid problems associated with soy were also well known to bird-breeders , which is how Soy Online Service first became aware of the goitrogenicity of soy. Well known, but that fact seemed to escape manufacturers of the first commercially available soy formulas. Those formulas were known to cause in goitre in infants and one can only wonder how many other infants were left hypothyroid or suffering from permanent thyroid damage by soy formulas. The iodine levels in soy formulas were increased and instances of goitre in infants fed these products ceased. However, there appears to have been no attempt to isolate or remove the goitrogenic properties from soy formulas. This is of grave concern because, although elevated iodine levels would have helped to nullify the effects of the goitrogens, the goitrogens would still have been actively suppressing thyroid function in infants. Hence millions of babies (particularly in the United States where soy formula feeding is most common) have needlessly been exposed to goitrogenic agents; Soy Online Service believe that infants fed soy formulas unnecessarily risk abnormal thyroid function and a greater risk of thyroid disease in later life.

Birds, soy and thyroid disorders Excerpt from Diseases of Caged Birds, pages 74-75 Author: Elisha W. Burr.
TFH Publications Inc, ISBN 0-8138-0362-4 Goiter (thyroid dysplasia), Goiter can occur as a result of hypothyroidism caused by iodine deficiency. Some authors consider it very rare (Rosskopf et al. 1982). Others have reported high incidence of this disorder (Blackmore and Cooper 1982). This can be explained by geographical considerations and dietary habit conditions. Etiology. As in all animals, iodine is required for thyroxin synthesis. A deficiency in the diet can result in decreased secretion of the hormone. Other factors can also stimulate the appearance of thyroid dysfunction (many plants (e.g., soybean) provide goitrogenic principles that inhibit thyroxin synthesis even if iodine is adequately supplied). This disease is unknown in seabirds, which receive large amounts of iodine from the fish in their diet. For caged birds eating only seeds, iodine supply can be in- sufficient and thyroid dysfunction can appear. Oyster shell grit contains an appreciable amount of iodine and can prevent the disease (except in Budgerigars). As a consequence of thyroxin deficiency, the thyroid-stimulating hormone from the anterior pituitary is released in increased amounts and the thyroid follicles become hyperplastic. Clinical Signs.
