About Your Diagnosis
Thromboangiitis obliterans is an inflammatory disease of the small and medium-sized arteries of the arms and legs. This inflammatory process leads to scarring and obstruction of the artery and loss of blood flow to the affected extremity. Thromboangiitis obliterans is also known as Buerger's disease. This disease is extremely rare in women and is typically found in men before the age of 50 years. Thromboangiitis obliterans is an infrequent cause of "poor circulation" and is found in 12 people per 100,000 population in the United States. The prevalence is much higher in Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. The cause of thromboangiitis obliterans is not known; however, the disease is found solely in tobacco smokers. The disease progresses if one continues to smoke and will improve if one abstains from smoking.

Thromboangiitis obliterans is a disorder that leads to obstruction of the blood vessels of the hands and feet. The blood vessels become constricted or totally obstructed because of the inflammation and clots which reduces the availability of blood to the tissues. Thromboangiitis obliterans almost always affects men, 20 to 40 years old, who have a history of smoking or chewing tobacco.

Buerger's disease (also known as thromboangiitis obliterans) is a rare disease characterized by a combination of acute inflammation and thrombosis (clotting) of the arteries and veins in the hands and feet. The obstruction of blood vessels in the hands and feet reduces the availability of blood to the tissues, causes pain and eventually damages or destroys the tissue. It often leads skin ulcerations and gangrene of fingers and toes. Rarely, in advanced stages of the disease, it may affect vessels in other parts of the body. Who is affected by Buerger's disease?

    Peripheral Vascular Disease

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) refers to conditions that primarily affect the arteries of the body, with the exception of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. Those are covered in the article on cardiovascular disease . The most common areas for PVD are the arteries of the legs and upper arms, the carotid (neck) arteries, the abdominal aorta and its branches, and the renal (kidney) arteries. Conditions affecting the veins, such as chronic venous insufficiency varicose veins , and hemorrhoids , are not usually included in PVD.

Thromboangiitis obliterans characteristically affects small-and medium-sized vessels of the limbs in young smokers. There is some controversy about the existence of visceral localizations of the disease. The case of a patient with a well-established diagnosis of thromboangiitis obliterans who presented with mesenteric ischemia is described and the literature concerning mesenteric involvement in the disease is reviewed. Thromboangiitis obliterans, also known as Buerger's disease, is an inflammatory, nonatherosclerotic vascular disease that most commonly affects the small-and medium-sized arteries and veins of the lower and upper extremities. It is characterized by the occurrence of segmental thrombotic occlusions of those vessels. It typically affects young smokers and evolves by crises. Its remissions and relapses are clearly correlated to the cessation or resumption of smoking.
