The first two authors contributed equally to this work. The pathophysiology of thrombocytopenia in the syndrome of thrombocytopenia with absent radii (TAR) is not yet understood. We examined thrombopoietin (TPO) serum levels and the in vitro reactivity of platelets to TPO in five patients affected with TAR syndrome. We found elevated TPO serum levels in all patients

Abstract:
Fanconi’s anemia (FA) is a paradigm for congenital anomalies, aplastic anemia and predisposition to malignancies. Identification of the disease at birth is based on characteristic physical malformations, as hematologic manifestations at birth are extremely rare. We report a case of FA in a newborn who presented with anopthalmia, unilateral radial ray defect, hemivertebrae and thrombo-cytopenia.
Key words: Anopthalmia, Fanconi’s anemia (FA), Radial ray defects, Thrombocytopenia.

National awards honor student inventors of devices to help people with disabilities
The team of twins Shin Yeu Ong and Shin Rong Ong, and the team of Diana Hsu and Elizabeth (Strautin) Schwartz tied for first place in the NISH Workplace Technology Scholarship competition. NISH, formerly the National Industries for the Severely Handicapped, is a national nonprofit agency that provides technical assistance to community rehabilitation programs. Each team will receive a $2,000 scholarship. The Ongs developed several envelope-stuffing devices for workers with cerebral palsy. Hsu/Schwartz developed a supportive head/neck brace that attaches to the wheelchair of a man with quadriplegia, improving his comfort and ability to interact with others. Irene Tseng and Derek Juang were selected winners of the student design contest sponsored by RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America). Their project was a shoulder-steered tricycle for a boy with TAR syndrome, which results in very short arm length. "We are very proud of these students," said bioengineering professor Larry Bohs, who started the Devices for People with Disabilities course at Duke in 1996 with funding support from the National Science Foundation. To date, 15 student teams have won national awards for their technologies.

    McKusick on Terminology
Editor 's Note: The following is quoted verbatim, without permission, from one of the last hardback versions (7th edition, Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 1986, pages xxiii-xxv) of Victor A. McKusick's immortal classic Mendelian Inheritance in Man . Short of downloading the complete text of about 15 Mbytes, I was unable to find this material in Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
Terminology The terminology related to many genetic disorders presents difficulties, especially when the basic defect is unknown. The naming of syndromes is a rather helter-skelter, hit-or-miss process. Like all language, the names of syndromes evolve; preferences are a matter of usage. Although personal bias has inevitably played a role in the choice of terms used here, I have atttempted to use most generally encountered terms in entry titles and to cross-index synonyms. Optimally, the name for a genetic trait or disorder should have some relation to the basic defect, but, as I have said, this is often, indeed usually, impossible because of ignorance of the nature of the trait. The name should be imaginative, in the sense that it should conjure up an image of the phenotype; that is, it should be mnemonic. It should be euphonious. It should also be appropriate for transmittal to patients. Tongue-twisters and possibly embarrassing terms such as as 'gargoylism' are not acceptable. Some 7 methods of naming are in use: 1. Eponyms are, improperly I think, maligned in some quarters. Admittedly, they should be used sparingly because they put a strain on the memory. Many, such as Alzheimer, Ehlers-Danlos, Ellis-van Creveld, Huntington, Marfan, Menkes, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher, and Wilson, are too well established to be avoided, and in addition, no entirely satisfactory noneponymic designation is available.
