View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: Whom It May Concern Little is known about Arnold Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia, we would like to see this changed. Right now there is not much federal funding for Chiari and/or Syringomyelia. Thousands of people have chiari and many more are diagnosed each day. With more federal funding we could do more research, and possibly find a 100% effective treatment. That would mean many people wouldn't have to live everyday full of pain and suffering. Please consider our request. Thank you very much.

MRI - Syringomyelia: This 50-year-old man presented with a gradually diminishing ability to walk. He had a past medical history of hypertension, Crohn's disease and recent frequent urinary tract infections. Examination revealed a loss of pinprick and temperature sensation extending inferiorly from the lower neck to the umbilicus, atrophy and weakness of intrinsic hand strength and a bilateral spastic paraparesis of the lower extremities. This sagittal T2-weighted MRI on the left shows an intrinsic cystic lesion of the cervicothoracic spinal cord with signal intensity equal to cerebrospinal fluid. The corresponding axial T2-weighed MRI on the right shows the abnormal signal intensity to be located in the central region of the spinal cord.

The General
Syringomyelia is a rare condition in which long, fluid filled spaces are present in the central gray matter of the spinal cord. We call this space as syrin which expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the spinal cord. Since the spinal cord connects the brain to nerves in the extremities, this damage results in pain, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms, or legs.
One way to think of syringomyelia is if you were to take a hot dog and inject water into the center. This forms an abnormal cavity within the structure of the spinal cord, causes pressure and disrupts the normal function of the nerves that travel from that area of the cord.
The Main Symptoms
Many of the symptoms of syringomyelia may be vague at beginning. However, symptoms can be progressive over a long period of time. Some people experience symptoms that occur suddenly, causing them to think they may have had a stroke.
Pain is one of the most common symptoms persons may experience. People may complain of pain in the arm, hand or leg. Some people report a burning type of pain around the ribs or in the neck or back. Often, the pain is present for months to years before a proper diagnosis is made. Pain on one side is more commonly reported than bilateral pain. Many persons report a tingling sensation or numbness in the arm, chest, or back, in a leg or foot. If left unchecked, some people will report burning or injuring themselves without knowing it due to the numbness in an extremity..

Syringomyelia and Syringobulbia
Syringomyelia is a fluid-filled cavity within the spinal cord that may link with CSF channels or stay localised and not communicate. A syrinx that extends into the medulla is called syringobulbia. Usually involves cervical region but may extend to whole cord.
Currently thought that a communicating syringomyelia is caused by a constriction of the central canal at the level of the foramen magnum during embryonic development. Particularly during episodes of increased intracranial pressure, CSF can pass down through the narrowed canal causing dilatation of the central canal but is unable to flow back in the cephalic direction.
Risk Factors trauma Presentation
Symptoms

Rarely presents symptoms in childhood due to slow growth of cavity. Asymmetrical loss of pain and temperature sensation in arms while light touch sensation retained (caused by interruption of the anterior white commissure at the level of the cervical cord resulting in disruption of the lateral spinothalamic tracts).
Trophic ulcers of the hands and arms due to vasomotor disturbances also indicate loss of pain sensation.

Description
The American Syringomyelia Alliance Project Inc. (ASAP), is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1988. Its main goals are to be a support network and information clearinghouse for people who have syringomyelia, a rare spinal cord disorder, a source of information and support for chiari malformations, and to support future research. ASAP is also working towards coordinating the efforts of organizations in the U.S. working to improve the lives of those challenged by syringomyelia or chiari malformations; increase public awareness of the existence of the disorders and the associated devastation; secure a uniform, national Medicare policy providing coverage for current and future treatments of the disorders; inform sufferers of the latest efforts of doctors who are treating the disorders; and urge research efforts to find all causes, to develop new treatments, and to improve existing treatments.
