A Primer on Summer Safety
By Michelle Meadows When it comes to summer, Olivia Kane, 36, mostly remembers the happy times: eating crabs on the beach, chasing flickering fireflies at night, and playing softball with friends. But there are other memories the Arlington, Va., resident wishes she could forget. Like the rash from poison ivy that broke out on her face, neck, and arms two days before she had to walk down the aisle in her sister's wedding. Or the time she went to the beach to get a tan before high school graduation. "What I got was a bright red sunburn," she says. "I had blistered cheeks, a blistered chest, and I was the graduation speaker." But her worst summer memory was when she took a sip from a can of soda and gulped down a bee that had crawled into the can when she wasn't looking. "I knew I swallowed something," Kane says. "I got so hysterical that I threw up." Out came the bee, and she went straight to the emergency room where she was treated for difficulty breathing.

Sunburn and your sunburn history
What is a sunburn?
A sunburn is your skin’s response to overexposure to UV radiation. The skin turns red, becomes hot, and painful. A severe sunburn may even result in swelling and/or blistering. The length of time that will cause such reactions varies from person to person. Dark skin helps protect your skin from such a reaction through a larger amount of melanin which absorbs damaging solar radiation. Fair skin contains a smaller amount of melanin and therefore burns more easily and is more susceptible to damage. A tan in a light skined person is a sign of sun damage and the skin trying to prevent further damage.
Why do you peel after a sunburn?
Peeling after sunburn is your body’s way of getting rid of damaged cells. This is necessary because cells damaged by the sun are at risk of "losing control" and becoming cancer. Due to this danger, all damaged cell are instructed to commit suicide by repair mechanisms within these cells. This mass suicide of cells results in whole layers of damaged skin peeling off, to be replaced by other cells underneath those layers.
What is the big deal if the damaged cells are shed anyhow?

Back to Top General Sunburn Information Sunlight provides warmth, helps people feel healthy and makes them feel energized, but too much exposure to sunlight can result in immediate pain and long-term harm. Sunburn is a direct result of too much sunlight on the skin, which can result in pain, allergic reactions and heat stroke. In the long term, victims of sunburn can suffer from lupus, cataracts, premature skin aging and an increased risk for skin cancer. Back to Top Possible Causes of Sunburn Sunburn is caused by extended exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. A person’s sensitivity to the sun is related to his or her skin type. An individual’s skin type determines how easily that person can become sunburned. Those with fair skin, freckles, blue eyes and/or blonde or red hair sunburn much easier than those with darker skin, eyes and hair. Children younger than 6 years of age and adults older than 60 years are at an increased risk for sunburn. Skin type affects how easily you become sunburned. People with fair or freckled skin, blond or red hair, and blue eyes usually sunburn easily. Your age also affects how your skin reacts to the sun. The skin of children under age 6 and adults over age 60 is more sensitive to sunlight. Premature aging from sunlight can affect people of all skin shades. A sunburn can be caused by the sun or by artificial tanning sources, including tanning beds and sun tanning lights. Sunburn can occur in both summer and winter.

Sunburn and Sun Protection
Sunburn is an inflammation of the skin that follows over exposure to ultraviolet (UV light) from the sun, sun lamps, or occupational light sources. Signs and symptoms:
  • Red swollen, painful and sometimes blistered skin.
  • Fever.
  • Nausea, vomiting and delirium with severe burns.
  • Tanning or peeling of skin after recovery.
There is increased risk if you are fair skinned; have red or blonde hair; are exposed to industrial light sources (welding arcs); or are on a medication which increases sensitivity of the skin to UV light. These medications are sulfa antibiotics, Tetracyclines, Amoxicillin, and oral contraceptives. The sunburn can result in skin changes that lead to premature wrinkling and loss of skin elasticity, as well as more serious outcomes such as keratosis, premalignant skin lesions, skin cancer, and malignant melanoma. Prevention of sunburn
  • Avoid exposure to sun between noon and 3:00 pm.

What is sunburn?
If you have been inside all winter and then go sit out in the sun on a bright spring day, it is very easy to get sunburned. Over the course of several hours, exposed skin turns bright red and becomes extremely painful when touched. The skin will often feel very warm as well. When you get a sunburn, you're basically killing skin cells. The outer layer of skin on your body is called the epidermis . The outermost cells of the epidermis the cells you see and feel on your arm, for example are dead. But just below the dead cells is a layer of living cells. These living cells continuously produce new dead cells to replenish your skin. By sitting in the sun, you expose yourself to ultraviolet light . Ultraviolet light has the ability to kill cells (see this page for details). Ultraviolet light hits the layer of living cells in the epidermis and starts damaging and killing them.

Mix together 2 tbsp each of marshmallow and comfrey root. Set over low heat in a saucepan with 1 cup olive oil and 1 cup wine for 30 minutes. Cool and strain. Marshmallow and comfrey are reputed to have excellent skin healing properties. Raw Aloe Vera
Break off a leaf of the plant and squeeze juice from the inside of the leaf onto the burn area. It will be thick and jelly-like, and it smells bad, but aloe vera provides a great healing aid to the skin. Tea Bags
Tannic acid can help draw the heat from a burn. Drop 2-3 tea bags in a bath - put under the spout while the water is running to get the most out of the tea bags. Add a decoction of comfrey root for more pain relief. Another method is to make a decoction using 3-4 tea bags (see How to make and use herb preparations ), 2 cups of fresh mint leaves and 4 cups water. Strain liquid into a jar and allow to cool. To use, dab the mixture on sunburned skin with a cotton ball or washcloth. You can also make a poultice out of 2-3 tea bags and place over the burned area. Or, simply place wet tea bags directly on the burn and cover with a piece of gauze to hold them in place.

During the Cold War of the sixties, the only thing stopping American or Russian psychopaths from taking over the entire world was the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction [MAD], where a multiple ICBM launch by America on Russia or vice versa, would automatically lead to a “doomsday” response by the nation under attack. Mutual destruction of both America and Russia was thereby guaranteed, resulting in nearly thirty years of unprecedented peace and quiet, caused solely by mutual nuclear fear.
About one month ago, Russia discreetly invoked MAD again, but this time in the Middle East in direct response to hysterical Israeli threats to nuke Iran with submarine-launched American Harpoon missiles. Quietly and with the minimum of fuss, Russia deployed its most advanced tactical nuclear missiles and crews to both Syria and Iran, thereby sending an unmistakable diplomatic signal that if Israel attacked Tehran or Damascus with nuclear weapons, Russia would in return instantly and anonymously vaporize the Jewish State.

Sunburn
Definition: Skin burned by exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light. See also sunburn first aid
Alternative Names: Burn from the sun
Common Causes: Sunburn results when the amount of exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light source exceeds the ability of the body's protective pigment, melanin , to protect the skin. Sunburn in a very light-skinned person may occur in less than 15 minutes of midday sun exposure, while a dark-skinned person may tolerate the same exposure for hours. It is now recognized that sunburn and sun exposure should not be taken as something insignificant. Deaths have resulted from acute sun exposure and significant temporary disability is experienced by millions of sunburned people each year. Unlike a thermal burn , sunburn is not immediately apparent. By the time the skin starts to become painful and red, the damage has been done. The pain is worst between 6 and 48 hours after sun exposure. In severe sunburns, blistering of the skin may occur.

Skin type Make sure you never burn The two types of UV rays that can damage our skin are UVA and UVB. UVA penetrates deeply into our skin and causes it to age, wrinkle and sag. It can make you look ten years older! Scientists now believe UVA rays can also cause skin cancer. As a general rule:
UVA = Ageing
UVB = Burning Exposure to UVB is more dangerous and is likely to be the major cause of all types of skin cancer. UVB has most effect on the cells just below the surface of the skin. In as little as 15 minutes, UVB rays can make the skin red, inflamed and painful. This is sunburn. Sunburn can double your risk of skin cancer Experts believe that having sunburn during childhood can significantly increase your risk of malignant melanoma Some also say that your chances of developing this type of skin cancer are doubled by just one blistering sunburn before the age of 20. It's easy to burn when you least expect it Many cases of sunburn happen when people are not deliberately 'sunbathing'. You may be out of doors watching sport, doing the gardening or just sitting in the park.
