Department of Pediatrics, Fukushima Medical College, Japan. The antiviral activity of ribavirin was studied in hamsters infected with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus. Ribavirn did not improve the survival of infected hamsters when administered intraperitoneally at the maximal nonlethal dose of 50 mg/kg/day for 10 days. However, when administered intracranially, ribavirin improved the survival of infected hamsters in a dose-dependent manner. The 50% effective dose was calculated

The disease may develop due to reactivation of the measles virus or an inappropriate immune response to the measles virus. SSPE usually develops 2 to 10 years after the original viral attack. Initial symptoms may include memory loss, irritability, seizures, involuntary muscle movements, and/or behavioral changes, leading to neurological deterioration. include memory loss, irritability, seizures, involuntary muscle movements, and/or behavioral changes, leading to neurological deterioration. Structural homogeneity of human subacute sclerosing panencephalitis antibodies
AD Strosberg, D Karcher and A Lowenthal
Three homogeneous immunoglobulin fractions were isolated from the serum of a patient with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). All three fractions reacted in immunodiffusion with measles and SSPE virus preparations. The amino-terminal sequence of the light and heavy chains of one of the antibody fractions was determined by automated Edman degradation. A single amino acid residue was obtained at every step, confirming the homogeneity of this human antibody.

Immune precipitation was used to study the humoral immune response of patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). Patients with SSPE have a progressive infection of the CNS by measles or a measles variant despite high serum antibody levels to measles virus as measured by standard serologic techniques. However, when the antibody response to individual measles virus proteins was measured, we found a striking reduction in the ability of sera from patients with SSPE to precipitate the matrix (M) protein as compared to the precipitation of the M protein by sera from normal adults who had natural measles infection in childhood, or

A total of 42 EEGs from five patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis were studied. Periodic complexes were noticed in 35 (83%) of these. The interval between the complexes shortened in all patients with progression of the illness. The gradual EEG changes may reflect the increasing number of infected cells as well as an on-going accumulation of immature virus structures. The records without complexes were either from

We report a case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) with severe peripheral chorioretinal pigment changes in addition to the more typical pigment clumping in the macula. The differential diagnosis of peripheral inactive chorioretinitis, the typical ocular findings, and clinical course of SSPE are discussed.

Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis in an Identical Twin
The first 300 words of the full text of this article appear below. Due to vaccination efforts, measles and its sequelae may no longer be endemic in the United States although there is still the problem of imported measles. We present a case, probably related to the last national measles epidemic in this country (1989-1990 in which an identical twin developed one of the most dreaded long-term sequelae of measles, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). CASE REPORT In mid-August 1998, a 9-year-old girl of Cambodian descent was hospitalized for evaluation of a progressive neurologic illness.

yes no Subacute-Sclerosing Panencephalitis: SSPE Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis is a serious viral encephalitis of children and young adults. It is a late manifestation of measles virus infection, developing between usually 6 and 12 years after natural measles infection. Cases can also follow immunization with measles vaccine but at a lesser frequency than after natural measles. The annual incidence is about 1 per million. It is believed that measles immunisation significantly reduces the risk of developing SSPE. Males are more commonly affected, as are those living in rural areas. Mortality is very high. Those who survive do so with considerable intellectual and also physical impairment. The precise sequence of events that results in the development of this disease in a tiny proportion of the population is not known. The great majority of children who develop SSPE are known to have had an attack of classical measles, usually many years before. Over 50 per cent of cases have had the disease at the unusually early age of under two years. The onset of the illness is insidious, the first signs are behavioural disturbances or a decline in school performance. Not infrequently the family are told that the cause for these behavioural or school problems is 'psychological.' Progression of the illness will vary from child to child but evidence that this is a more serious illness usually begins with loss of motor control and co-ordination. This often starts with characteristic jerking movements which may at first appear as clumsiness. These jerking movements are known as myoclonic seizures. Grand mal (also called tonic-clonic) seizures may also occur. As the condition worsens problems with swallowing and speech develop and vision may be impaired.
