STRESS AND BURNOUT IN MINISTRY
by Rowland Croucher
It was a grey Canadian morning in April 1982. The children had gone to school, my wife to work, and I did something I'd never done before. I turned the phone down, put a note on the front door, and went back to bed. I was burned out - and within two months resigned my ministry there. Meanwhile, back in Australia, four books about ministry had come off the presses. Note the titles: The Plight of the Australian Clergy, High Calling High Stress, Battle Guide for Christian Leaders - an Endangered Species, and Conflict and Decline.
FIRST, THE BAD NEWS
(1) 'Stress now contributes to 90% of all diseases. Half of all visits to doctors are stress-related'. 'Anxiety reduction' may now be the largest single business in the Western world. (2) 'Doctors, lawyers and clergy have the most problems with drug abuse, alcoholism and suicide.' (3) 'Research 25 years ago showed clergy dealing with stress better than most professionals. Since 1980, studies in the U.S. describe an alarming spread of burnout in the profession. For example, Jerdon found three out of four parish ministers (sample: 11,500) reported severe stress causing 'anguish, worry, bewilderment, anger, depression, fear, and alienation'. Why is pastoral ministry so stressful?

These misdirected telephone calls are becoming a serious disturbance to an Ellicott City family, and have noticeably increased post-September 11 and since the onset of Operation Iraqi Freedom. If you are responsible for a website, please make sure that any documents, links or information referring to ICISF have the correct telephone numbers. Stress - Coping With Everyday Problems
Stress is a natural part of life. The expressions are familiar to us, “I’m stressed out,”  “I’m under too much stress,” or “Work is one big stress.” Stress is hard to define because it means different things to different people; however, it’s clear that most stress is a negative feeling rather than a positive feeling. Stress can be both physical and mental. You may feel physical stress which is the result of too much to do, not enough sleep, a poor diet or the effects of an illness. Stress can also be mental: when you worry about money, a loved one’s illness, retirement, or experience an emotionally devastating event, such as the death of a spouse or being fired from work. However, much of our stress comes from less dramatic everyday responsibilities. Obligations and pressures which are both physical and mental are not always obvious to us. In response to these daily strains your body automatically increases blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, metabolism, and blood flow to you muscles. This response, is intended to help your body react quickly and effectively to a high-pressure situation. However, when you are constantly reacting to stressful situations without making adjustments to counter the effects, you will feel stress which can threaten your health and well-being.

    What Causes Holiday Blues?
Coping with Stress and Depression During the Holidays
    • Keep expectations for the holiday season manageable. Try to set realistic goals for yourself. Pace yourself. Organize your time. Make a list and prioritize the important activities. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. Do not put entire focus on just one day (i.e., Thanksgiving Day) remember it is a season of holiday sentiment and activities can be spread out (time-wise) to lessen stress and increase enjoyment. Remember the holiday season does not banish reasons for feeling sad or lonely; there is room for these feelings to be present, even if the person chooses not to express them. Do something for someone else.

Stress Incontinence: Symptoms, Risk Factors and Treatment
Stress incontinence doesn't actually have anything to do with emotional stress. The term refers to urine leakage during physical activity that results in increased pressure on the abdomen. This pressure need not be much: bending over, laughing and coughing can cause urine leakage in stress incontinence sufferers. According to urologists, stress incontinence can strike either sex, although two thirds of all sufferers are women. In either sex, pelvic muscles, which normally support the bladder, can become weakened due to injury or aging. This allows the bladder to "drop" and push down towards the urethra. Because of this, the muscles that usually tighten and help the urethral sphincter to control urine flow cannot operate as effectively as they should. Many people suffer stress incontinence silently, too embarrassed to seek help. However, there's good news: treatment for urine leakage is readily available and your physician can offer several options. This site is divided into multiple articles, covering topics such as stress incontinence

Overview
Primary themes in the NIOSH's job stress research program are: 1) to better understand the influence of what are commonly-termed "work organization" or "psychosocial" factors on stress, illness, and injury, and 2) to identify ways to redesign jobs to create safer and healthier workplaces. Following below are specific examples of research topics at NIOSH that fall within these two broad themes.
  • Characteristics of healthy work organizations Work organization interventions to promote safe and healthy working conditions Surveillance of the changing nature of work Work organization interventions to reduce musculoskeletal disorders among office operators Work schedule designs to protect the health and well-being of workers The effects of new organizational policies and practices on worker health and safety Changing worker demographics (race/ethnicity, gender, and age) and worker safety and health

DOLPHIN STRESS TEST It's a simple test designed to indicate whether people have too much stress in their life.
It's a picture of two dolphins. The two dolphins appear normal when viewed by a stress-free individual. This test is not accurate enough to pick up mild stress levels.
It's quite simple. If there is anything that appears different about the dolphins (ignore the fact of the slight color differences) it is often an indication of potential stress related problems. Differences, if any, may also indicate the source of your stress.
