INFLUENZA Sore Throat What causes a sore throat? Pharyngitis (say: "fare-en-jy-tis")which is what your doctor calls a sore throatcan be caused by many things. Sometimes, when mucus from your sinuses drains into your throat, the drainage can make your throat feel sore. Viruses (such as those that cause the common cold) and bacteria (which can cause many illnesses, such as strep throat) can give you a sore throat. Your throat also may feel sore if you smoke, breathe polluted air, or drink alcoholic beverages. If you have hay fever or other allergies, a sore throat may be one of the symptoms. Strep Throat
Strep throat is caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, also called group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS). This infection is most common in children over three years of age and begins with a fever, a red, swollen throat, and tonsils that can have a white coating of pus. Other symptoms often include swollen glands, decreased appetite and a decreased energy level. Related Topics Sore Throats Mononucleosis Scarlet Fever If strep throat is suspected as the cause of tonsillitis in your child, your doctor will do a throat swab to confirm that there is infection with strep bacteria. A rapid antigen test is usually performed in the office. If this test is negative, there is still a small chance that your child has strep and an overnight culture will then be done to see if any strep bacteria grow. It is important to remember that you can not tell the difference between strep throat and other viral causes of sore throats. Just because there is pus on your child's tonsils, it does not mean that he needs an antibiotic. Antibiotics are only used to treat sore throats that are caused by strep, so if the tests are negative, your child most likely has a virus that will need to clear up on its own.

    What is Strep Throat?
Strep Throat is an infection caused by bacteria, Streptococcus bacteria to be exact. It usually isn’t a serious illness, but left unchecked can spiral into many serious complications.
What are the Symptoms of Strep Throat?
Symptoms of strep throat in children usually entail: a sore throat, abdominal pain, a bright red rash, difficulty swallowing, fever, chills, aches and pains, loss of appetite, swollen tonsils with pus on them, and swollen glands. If left untreated, strep throat complications can be as severe as a kidney infection, pneumonia, and/or tonsillitis. It is important to take your child to the doctor as soon as you detect even initial symptoms of strep.

    How to Treat Strep Throat
Almost 20 percent of Americans have strep bacteria in their throats and are symptom-free. Strep throat does not necessarily need to be treated. However, some untreated cases can deteriorate into scarlet fever, joint disorders or heart conditions. Steps: See your doctor for a throat culture. An instant strep throat test can tell you if you have strep throat in less than 30 minutes. Take antibiotics as ordered by your doctor - generally 250 mg of penicillin G orally every six hours. The penicillin family is very effective in killing the strep bacteria. Check your temperature twice a day, to assess the severity of your infection. (See "How To Diagnose Strep Throat.") Take aspirin, if you are an adult, to reduce fever and inflammation. Give acetaminophen to children as recommended by your doctor. Suck on throat lozenges - especially those containing menthol, benzocaine or phenol, which will help numb the throat, if you are an adult. Give children cough drops or hard candy.

    strep throat
The group A streptococcus bacterium (Streptococcus pyogenes) is responsible for most cases of streptococcal illness. Other types (B, C, D, and G) may also cause infection. Group B streptococci cause most streptococcal infections in newborns and maternal post-labor/delivery infections. Some of the major syndromes associated with group A strep infection are:
    • streptococcal pharyngitis or "strep throat"
    • scarlet fever, most often preceded by a sore throat
    • skin infections (impetigo, cellulitis/erysipelas)
    • focal infections, limited to a particular body site, e.g., pneumonia, septic arthritis
    • bacteremia, sepsis, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome
    • necrotizing fasciitis
    • the complications of streptococcal infections, acute rheumatic fever and poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis
The signs and symptoms of strep throat are red, sore throat with white patches on tonsils, swollen lymph nodes in neck, fever, and headache. Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain more common in children. The illness is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes and is spread by direct, close contact with patients via respiratory droplets (coughing or sneezing). Casual contact rarely results in transmission. Rarely, contaminated food, especially milk and milk products, can result in outbreaks. Untreated patients are most infectious for 2-3 weeks after onset of infection. Incubation period, the period after exposure and before symptoms show up, is 2-4 days. Patient is no longer infectious within 24 hours of commencing treatment.

Strep Throat: what is incubation period?
by Robert Steele, MD (see more from this expert) What is the incubation period for the virus that causes strep throat?
Unfortunately, this is a difficult question to answer. This is mainly due to the fact that some (up to 25%) people pick up the strep bacteria, and show no symptoms. These people become carriers of the bacteria and transmit it to others without actually becoming sick themselves. The majority of contacts, however, probably become symptomatic within the week. Remember that those with strep throat are considered non-contagious after 24 hours of antibiotics. Therefore, if strep throat has not occurred in a contact within the week, the child probably won't catch it. But keep in mind, if a playmate gets strep throat and passes it along to other playmates in the group, the chain of infection may not break for several weeks.

    Colds, Flu, and Strep Throat
Approximately 20% of Cornell students consider "colds, flu, and strep throat" impediments to their academic performance. While hand-washing, sleep, and proper nutrition can bolster your immune system and help protect you against these illnesses, chances are that you will still contract an upper respiratory infection at least once, and possibly several times during your college career. The symptoms of colds, flu, and strep throat can overlap , making it difficult to know when to seek medical attention. The following overview and FAQs can help you to identify and manage these illnesses.
    Colds at a glance
    • Symptoms of the common cold usually begin 2-3 days after infection with the virus and last from 2-14 days. They often include nasal congestion, sneezing, sore throat, cough, and headache. Fever is usually slight but can climb to 102° F.

This infection of the upper respiratory tract is caused by bacteria of the Streptococcus family. Though streptococci are the most common bacterial causes of repiratory infections, strep infections are much less common than viral respiratory infections ( colds ), which may have similar symptoms. Strep throat is most common in winter and spring. Children with strep throat also may develop a skin rash known as scarlet fever HOW DOES STREP THROAT DEVELOP?
Strep bacteria spread from person to person in droplets expelled during coughing and sneezing. Usually, however, close contact, such as sharing eating utensils or playing face-to-face, is needed for the bacteria to spread. Outbreaks of strep throat can occur in communities, day care centers, schools and families. WHEN SHOULD I SUSPECT THAT MY CHILD HAS STREP THROAT?
Symptoms of strep throat include fever sore throat , severe pain on swallowing, tender and swollen lymph glands in the neck, malaise and nausea. The throat and soft palate are red, swollen and frequently coated with a yellowish-white material. There is usually no cough. Fever typically lasts for one to three days, and sore throat persists for approximately five days.

Although some of the symptoms may feel similar, a sore throat is not the same as a strep throat. Sore throat A sore throat (the medical name is pharyngitis) can be caused by a variety of things. Some of the culprits, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) include:
    • viruses, similar to those that cause colds (Read about " The Common Cold ")
    • irritants such as air pollution or smoking (Read about " Quit Smoking ")
    • allergies (Read about " Allergies ")
    • bacteria
    • post nasal drainage
Although most people consider a sore throat to be more of an irritating condition, a chronic sore thorat or a persistent cough can indicate an underlying medical problem. (Read about " Tonsils and Adenoids " " Vocal Problems: Laryngitis and Vocal Growths " " Head and Neck Cancers " " Occupational Respiratory Diseases ") Therefore, if a sore throat persists, you should see your doctor or healthcare specialist. Strep throat A strep throat is a particular kind of sore throat, caused by a specific bacteria called Streptococcus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strep throat is more common in children than adults. It's not something to take lightly since serious complications can occur if it is not treated with antibiotics. (Read about "

Air Date: 07/06/2005 Reported by: Dr. Deanna Lites Producer: Dana Paravati Email this story to a friend Strep throat can leave you feeling pretty crummy with a sore throat and fever. After a few days and maybe some antibiotics, it should go away and you'll be fine. Or at least that's the case for most of us. According to a new study, the problems may be just beginning. A new study shows that some kids can develop neurological disorders after a strep infection. Strep throat is a very common infection. While most children get over a strep infection without any problems, a study in The Journal Pediatrics finds that for a small group of kids that's not the case.
