Watch Your Strep! A sore throat can be either an annoying ailment from allergies or a virus, or the symptom of another illness. Strep throat is a contagious disease caused by an infection with Group A Streptococcus (pronounced: strep-toe-kock-cus) bacteria. While anyone can get strep throat, it is most commonly seen in children between the ages of 5 and 16 . It is important that you go to a health care provider if you suspect strep, because if left untreated streptococcal throat infections can lead to rheumatic fever and kidney disease. It's also important for teenagers to find out if a bad sore throat is a symptom of mononucleosis do not usually occur with a strep throat. Strep is extremely contagious. The strep bacterium is found in the nose and/or throat of infected persons and is spread to the next person through the air with sneezing or coughing. Rarely, people catch strep throat by eating contaminated food. People with strep throat can spread the disease to others until 24 hours after treatment or for 10 to 21 days if untreated. Prevention In normal everyday life, there is no perfect way to avoid strep throat infections. At home, when someone is sick with strep throat, it's always safest to wash drinking glasses and eating utensils with hot soapy water, or in the dishwasher, and to wash your hands often as you care for the affected person. If you know someone with strep throat, be sure to wash your hands often until they are treated.

Description Strep throat is a throat infection caused by the group A ß-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria . Strep throat infections are contagious and strep bacteria commonly pass from person to person in the fluid droplets of coughs and sneezes. Streptococcus bacteria can also contaminate food, water and milk. In some cases, a strep throat infection can lead to scarlet fever, or be followed by rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis (a kidney problem). Strep throat is the most common type of throat infection caused by bacteria, and it tends to affect children between 5 and 15 years old. Despite being the most common type of throat infection caused by bacteria, strep throat only causes about 15% of all cases of sore throats with the vast majority caused by viruses Symptoms and Signs Diagnosis and Treatment Since bacteria can be treated with antibiotics while viruses can not, diagnosis will focus on determining if the sore throat is indeed strep throat and thus can be treated with antibiotics. Swabs of fluids from the back of the throat are usually taken and often an instant strep test can be done on the spot. Otherwise the swab of fluids is sent to be analysed for the presence of bacteria.

Diagnosing, treating condition can be daunting, experts say By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, April 7 (HealthDayNews) Two new studies shed light on the latest thinking about diagnosing and treating strep throat. Strep throat is caused by Streptococcus bacteria and is the most common bacterial infection of the throat. It is a common condition in children and can also infect adults. While the condition is usually harmless, it can lead to complications, especially in children. Strep usually responds well to antibiotics. However, the overuse of antibiotics to treat common sore throats has resulted in strep becoming resistant to some drugs. In the first study, Dr. Warren J. McIsaac, from the department of family medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and his colleagues looked at the various ways doctors diagnose strep. The research team looked at throat cultures and rapid antigen tests that detect strep, from 787 children and adults with acute sore throat. The team then compared the value of these tests along with diagnostic protocols to determine the best way to find strep.

Strep throat may occur at any age, but is most common in children over 4 or 5 years of age. It is contracted by person-to-person contact and the incubation is 2 to 5 days. For those not already sick with strep throat, the cold, or the flu, it is most important to talk about how to prevent infection. While taking full advantage of all that the winter wonderland has to offer, keep in mind that frequent washing of your hands can stem the spread of unwanted seasonal guests such as the common cold. Scrub up especially after coughing or sneezing and before preparing food and eating.

The infection can also cause a fever, swollen lymph glands, and a rash also known as scarlet fever in rare cases. The infection is a trigger in some cases of rheumatic fever and the kidney disorder glomerulonephritis. The risk of rheumatic fever is extremely low in most western populations. Overcrowding and poverty seems to be associated with an increased risk of this complication. Antibiotics have been used to treat strep throat in the past but there is now controversy over the routine use of antibiotics. Most doctors will balance the risk of rheumatic fever in a particular patient against the risks associated with antibiotic usage.

Strep Throat What it is "Strep throat" is the common name for an infection of the throat caused by one particular type of streptococcus bacteria. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, not by streptococci and are not strep infections. Strep throat is fairly common among college age patients. The diagnosis requires examination by a health care professional who can distinguish this disease from other upper respiratory infections. Diagnosis of strep throat can only be confirmed by laboratory testing. Symptoms The symptoms vary from a mildly sore throat with virtually no other complaints, to a severe illness with difficulty swallowing, high fever, painful swollen throat and swelling of the lymph glands in the neck. It is generally of a more sudden severe onset than the more gradual low grade discomfort seen with viral sore throat. Treatment Treatment requires antibiotics, usually penicillin or erythromycin, for a period of ten days. With appropriate medication, patients are no longer contagious after 2 or 3 days. Additional treatment consists of rest and salt water gargles to relieve discomfort (1/2 tsp. of salt in one glass of warm water), and aspirin or tylenol to reduce fever and pain. The treatment of sore throats due to viral infections with antibiotics is a practice to be avoided. Viral sore throats do not heal faster or more completely with antibiotic treatment, and the use of unnecessary antibiotics only assists your body in colonizing antibiotic resistent strains of common bacteria which can cause other infections.

Although some of the symptoms may feel similar, a sore throat is not the same as a strep throat. Sore throat A sore throat (the medical name is pharyngitis) can be caused by a variety of things. Some of the culprits, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) include:
  • viruses, similar to those that cause colds (Read about " The Common Cold ")
  • irritants such as air pollution or smoking (Read about " Quit Smoking ")
  • allergies (Read about " Allergies ")
  • bacteria
  • post nasal drainage
Although most people consider a sore throat to be more of an irritating condition, a chronic sore thorat or a persistent cough can indicate an underlying medical problem. (Read about " Tonsils and Adenoids " " Vocal Problems: Laryngitis and Vocal Growths " " Head and Neck Cancers " " Occupational Respiratory Diseases ") Therefore, if a sore throat persists, you should see your doctor or healthcare specialist. Strep throat A strep throat is a particular kind of sore throat, caused by a specific bacteria called Streptococcus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strep throat is more common in children than adults. It's not something to take lightly since serious complications can occur if it is not treated with antibiotics. (Read about "

What is a sore throat?
When your throat hurts it is often a symptom of an illness, such as a cold. When someone looks at the throat with a light, it will be bright red.
What is the cause?
Most sore throats are caused by viruses and are part of a cold. About 10% of sore throats are caused by strep bacteria. A throat culture or rapid strep test is the only way to know whether a sore throat is caused by strep bacteria or a virus. Without treatment, a strep throat can have some rare but serious complications. Tonsillitis (temporary swelling and redness of the tonsils) is usually present with any throat infection, viral or bacterial. The presence of tonsillitis does not have any special meaning.
