Parents Infections
Signs and Symptoms Approximately 15% of children who have a sore throat and fever are infected by Group A streptococci. When Group A streptococci infect the throat, they cause pharyngitis, which is a painful inflammation of the throat (pharynx). Swallowing may become so painful that the child has difficulty eating. A child with strep pharyngitis often has a fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius), with chills, body aches and loss of appetite. There also may be abdominal symptoms, like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The tonsils and the back of the throat may look red, swollen, and dotted with whitish or yellowish specks of pus. There may be swollen glands in the neck and at the angles of the jaw. Strangely, in spite of all the throat pain, hoarseness and loss of voice are not common. Some rare cases of strep infection may result in the production of a toxin that causes a bright red skin rash. This is the rash of " scarlet fever ," and it usually lasts from the second to the sixth day of the strep throat infection. In infants, strep throat infections - although rare unless infants are in child care - tend to cause symptoms that seem less limited to the throat. Infants may have a runny nose, crusting and sores around the nostrils and a low fever. They may also begin to feed poorly.

Strep Throat
Strep Throat Overview
Strep throat is a contagious disease caused by infection with streptococcal bacteria. Strep throat symptoms include fever, pain, redness, and swelling of the throat and tonsils. Strep throat may produce mild or severe symptoms.
  • Although strep throat is most common in school-aged children and teens, adults may also get this disease. Strep throat is more widespread during the school year when a large number of students are present in an enclosed space, laughing, yelling, sneezing, and coughing. The bacteria are present in the nose and throat, so normal activities such as sneezing, coughing, or shaking hands can spread the infection to other people. The infection can also be acquired by touching objects such as books, tables, or other hard surfaces that were handled by an infected person. Most cases of sore throat are caused by viruses and are not strep throat. Viral sore throats do not need treatment. Symptoms of a viral sore throat include a runny nose, cough, hoarseness, red or runny eyes, and diarrhea. The viral sore throat improves on its own without any treatment.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Strep throat is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 15, although it can happen in younger children and adults. Children younger than 3 can get strep infections, but these usually don't affect the throat. Strep throat is most common in the late fall, winter, and early spring. The infection is spread by person-to-person contact with nasal secretions or saliva, often among family or household members. People with strep throat get sick 2–5 days after they are exposed. The illness usually begins suddenly, with a fever that peaks on the second day. Many also have sore throat, headache, stomachache, nausea, or chills.

What is strep throat? What are the signs of strep throat?
Strep throat is an infection caused by bacteria. It is called "strep" because the bacteria that causes the infection is called streptococcus. Children with strep throat have a sore throat and may have tummy pain or a red rash with small spots. The rash is worse under the arms and in skin creases. Return to top
    How is strep throat treated?
Your doctor may give you or your child an antibiotic. Antibiotics kill bacteria, which helps strep throat go away a little faster. It can also prevent a few rare but serious conditions that people with strep throat might get. It is important to take all of the medicine your doctor gives you. Return to top

"It could be strep throat." Have you ever heard a doctor or your mom say that when you're sick and you have a sore throat? Strep throat is a disease caused by tiny egg-shaped bacteria (say: bak- teer -ee-uh) called Group A streptococci (say: strep-toe- kah -kye). These bacteria cause 15% to 20% of all sore throats and are found in your throat and on your skin. If a kid has strep throat, the doctor will probably give him or her medicine called antibiotics. These kill the strep bacteria. That's good news because sometimes strep throat can get worse and cause problems with other parts of a kid's body. In rare cases, untreated strep can cause arthritis (say: ar- threye -tus) or heart problems from a disease called rheumatic (say: roo- mah -tik) fever. Most of the time kids get the medicine they need and recover from strep throat very quickly. After taking the medicine for 24 hours, you will feel a lot better and will no longer be contagious. However, it is really important to take all 10 days of the medicine to make sure that you have treated the infection. How Do I Get It?

(1 ) Once more, against our better judgment, we have succumbed to the disease of writing, and are thus compelled to report our latest findings on a matter of great importance to public health. Our previous research(2) dealt with cases of recurrent canine-transmitted streptococcal pharyngitis.(3) We now turn our attention to a largely undocumented phenomenon: the apparent relationship between strep throat and eating in Italian restaurants. We describe the case of an 8 year-old child.

    What is strep throat?
While many people use the terms sore throat, tonsillitis, and strep throat interchangeably, there are significant differences between these conditions. Understanding the differences can give parents a better idea of how and when to be concerned and seek advice from the child's doctor. Tonsils and tonsillitis
The tonsils are red, oval clumps of tissue located at the back and to the sides of the throat. This location allows the tonsils to intercept germs as they enter the child's body through the nose and throat. They contain infection-fighting cells and antibodies that stop the spread of the germs further into the body. When the tonsils become red, sore, and swollen, this inflammation is called tonsillitis. This is not a specific term, as there are many causes of tonsil inflammation. Viral sore throat
In infants and children, the most common cause of tonsillitis is an infecting germ called a virus. For a viral infection, no antibiotic is usually needed and the infection can be expected to run a four-to-six day course. During this period, the child can be treated with lots of fluids, rest, and medicine to reduce pain and/or fever, such as
