"It is often asked at what age should treatment no longer be attempted. The answer is, everyone deserves a chance! Age should not be a deterrent..." Strabismus What is it?
Strabismus, more commonly known as crossed-eyes, is a vision condition in which a person can not align both eyes simultaneously under normal conditions. One or both of the eyes may turn in, out, up or down. An eye turn may be constant (when the eye turns all of the time) or intermittent (turning only some of the time, such as, under stressful situations or when ill). Whether constant or intermittent , strabismus always requires appropriate evaluation and treatment. Learn all about strabismus "Children do not 'outgrow' eye turns! Early detection and treatment advised!" Who has strabismus?
It is estimated that up to 5 percent of all children have some type or degree of strabismus. Children with strabismus may initially have double vision. This occurs because of the misalignment of the two eyes in relation to one another. In an attempt to avoid double vision, the brain will eventually disregard the image of one eye (called suppression). Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Strabismus is caused by a lack of coordination between the eyes. As a result, the eyes look in different directions and do not focus simultaneously on a single point. In most cases of strabismus in children, the cause is unknown. In more than half of these cases, the problem is present at or shortly after birth (congenital strabismus). In children, when the two eyes fail to focus on the same image, the brain may learn to ignore the input from one eye. If this is allowed to continue, the eye that the brain ignores will never see well. This loss of vision is called amblyopia , and it is frequently associated with strabismus.

Vision problems are common in children. Early recognition and treatment are the keys to preventing permanent visual impairment. Let us begin by defining two important terms: strabismus and amblyopia.
  • Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes. The eyes may cross or drift up or out. Strabismus may be present from birth or may develop in childhood. Amblyopia , sometimes referred to as "lazy eye," is poor vision in an eye that did not develop normal sight during childhood. Without treatment, children with amblyopia will never see well in one eye, even with glasses.
Strabismus and amblyopia are common, each occurring in 4 of 100 children. The risk of these conditions is much higher with a family history of eye problems.

WHAT IS STRABISMUS? Strabismus is the condition where the eyes are misaligned. Different types of strabismus include crossed eyes (esotropia, the most common type in children), out-turned eyes (exotropia), or vertical misalignment (hyper or hypotropia). The problem may be present intermittently or constantly. Treatment options depend upon the type of strabismus, and may include glasses, prism lenses, and/or surgery. Formed almost 35 years ago, it's mission is to optimize the quality of life for infants and children as well as adults with strabismus by fostering normal vision development and protection of vision through programs of prevention, treatment, research, and education. To find out more about the Foundation, just click here WHY DOES A CHILD NEED GLASSES? Children may need glasses for several reasons some of which are different than for adults. Because a child's vision system is growing and developing, especially during the first 5-6 years of life, glasses may play an important role in insuring normal vision development.  » General Info Strabismus Adult Strabismus General Information General Information Strabismus (misaligned eyes) in adults is often the result of progressive, untreated or unsuccessfully treated strabismus from childhood. There are also many adults who develop strabismus as the result of an injury or disease, which then frequently leads to double vision. In the past, most eye doctors thought that adults with misaligned eyes could not be treated successfully, or that treatment was "only cosmetic". Advances in the management of misaligned eyes now provide benefits to most adults as well as children. Treating adults with strabismus can improve depth perception, the way the two eyes work together, and the field of vision [1-7]. Many patients report improved self-esteem [8-10], communication skills [9], job opportunities [11,12], reading and driving [13,14]. Before After
Treatment of strabismus generally requires eye muscle surgery. However, some patients may need glasses, prisms, medications, or may be best left untreated. The photographs shown here illustrate cases with successful surgical outcomes; however, as with any form of treatment, success can vary and complications may occur. The best way to determine whether straightening of the eyes is possible and appropriate, is to undergo an examination by a strabismus surgeon who is experienced in treating adults. If you'd like further information, ask your eye doctor for a referral to a strabismus surgeon who is experienced in treating adults, or consult other parts of the Adult Strabismus Web Site.
