Yasser Arafat's gaunt, fragile appearance during last weekend's inauguration of an emergency cabinet for the Palestinian Authority has raised a flurry of speculation over the state of the 74-year-old leader's health. Palestinian officials on Wednesday denied rumors that Arafat had last week suffered a mild heart attack and explained that Arafat has been suffering from a bad case of the flu or an intestinal infection. But according to a source inside the compound, the recent working diagnosis is that Arafat is suffering from stomach cancer. Al-Jazeera TV reported Wednesday that two teams of doctors, one from Jordan and the other from Egypt, arrived in Ramallah Wednesday to treat Arafat. Abu Dhabi TV reported on Thursday that following their examination of the Palestinian leader, the Egyptian doctors "expressed concern" about the state of his health. Neither report specified his condition.

These two images display some nasty looking lesions. In Image 1 the cancer is actually growing out into the stomach. This is a fairly large cancer. Image 2 shows an ulcerating type of cancer. This deep whitish-green ulcer looks like those that can occur with certain arthritis drugs such as ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Voltaren and Feldene. However, on biopsy, it turned out to be cancer. Both patients required surgery and are now doing well. Patient Ed Diseases Procedures Diets ... Links

Worldwide, stomach cancer (also referred to as gastric cancer) remains one of the most common forms of cancer, affecting approximately 800,000 new individuals annually. However, the rate of stomach cancer has been declining in the United States and western Europe over the past half-century, a trend which has been felt attributable in large part to changes in diet during this period of time. Interestingly, the incidence of cancers located in different portions of the stomach appear to be heading in opposite directions: while those located in the more distal (lower) portion of the stomach have been declining in incidence, there has actually been an increase in cases occurring in the proximal portion of the stomach (closer to the esophagus) and at the gastroesophageal junction (where the esophagus meets the stomach). [Top] Stray bone marrow cells can cause cancer-(Times of India-27/11/2004) tomach cancer may arise from stray bone marrow cells rather than stomach cells, researchers said in a study that could overthrow theories about the origins of the disease. The study challenges a long held assumption that stomach, lung and other cancers start when a cell within that tissue racks up mutations and starts to multiply uncontrollably. Timothy Wang of Columbia University wondered whether bone marrow cells which are thought to home in on infected and inflamed areas might be sparking cancers. They studied mice infected with heliobacter pylori which is an ulcer causing bacterium that triggers a large proportion of human stomach cancers. They wiped out the animal's own bone marrow with radiation and then infused them with fresh bone marrow cells. These were labeled so that they could be tracked through the body. 20 weeks later some of the bone marrow cells had homed into the stomach and divided and tumours had formed.

NEW YORK - Cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco products significantly increases the risk of death from stomach cancer in men and women, a large study of US adults indicates. Stomach cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide and is known to be linked to chronic infection with the ulcer-causing bacteria Helicobacter pylori. In its Review of Tobacco conducted in June of this year, the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that there is "sufficient evidence in humans" to infer a causal relationship between stomach cancer and tobacco use, Dr. Ann Chao of the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, Georgia, told Reuters Health. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Several different types of cancer can occur in the stomach. The most common type is called adenocarcinoma, which refers to the way the cancer looks under the microscope. There are several types of adenocarcinoma. Because other types of gastric cancer occur much less frequently, this article focuses on adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is a common cancer of the digestive tract worldwide, although it is relatively uncommon in the US. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years old. The incidence of this form of gastric cancer is extremely high in Japan, Chile, and Iceland. The incidence of most types of gastric adenocarcinoma in the US has declined over the years. Experts think the decrease may be related to reduced intake of salted, cured, and smoked foods, and increased vitamin C consumption. However, the incidence of adenocarcinoma in the high part of the stomach where it connects with the esophagus has increased markedly, along with an increase in cancers of the lower esophagus. The reason for this increase is unknown.

New Research Shows Stomach (Gastric) Cancer Originates From Bone Marrow Derived Stem Cells
A new study from Columbia University Medical Center finds that stomach (gastric) cancer originates from bone marrow derived stem cells (BMDC), rather than from stomach stem cells, as previously thought. The study, "Gastric Cancer Originating from Bone Marrow-Derived Cells" is published in the current issue of Science. "This was an unexpected finding, which may lead to a re-evaluation of current assumptions about how all cancers originate," said Timothy C. Wang, M.D., chief, Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases and Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and senior author of the study. "The implications of this study may lead to new methods of diagnosis and treatment of many cancers – particularly those that have been linked to chronic inflammation such as stomach, esophagus, lung, pancreas, liver, etc." Related News Stories Adult Mouse Bone Marrow Stem Cells Can Become Cells Of The Nervous System (August 19, 2003)

Each year, millions ofAmericans are diagnosed with digestive disorders, ranging from the occasional upset stomach to the more life-threatening colorectal cancer. They encompass disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Consider the following:
  • Sixty to 70 million persons are affected by all digestive diseases.
Thirteen percent of all hospitalizations are for digestive disorders.
Digestive disorders account for 50 million physician office visits per year.
Digestive disorders cost $107 billion - $87 billion in direct medical costs and $20 billion in indirect costs each year.
Most digestive diseases are very complex, with subtle symptoms, and the causes of many remain unknown. They may be inherited, or develop from multiple factors such as stress, fatigue, diet, or smoking. Abusing alcohol imposes the greatest risk for digestive diseases. Reaching a diagnosis requires a thorough and accurate medical history and physical examination. Some patients may need to undergo more extensive diagnostic evaluations, including laboratory tests, endoscopic procedures, and imaging techniques. Physicians who specialize in the treatment of digestive problems are called gastroenterologists.
