Adenocarcinomas of the stomach originate from the glandular cells of the stomach lining. In the United States, adenocarcinoma of the stomach occurs in about 8 of 100,000 people each year and is the seventh most common cause of cancer death. It is more common among certain populations: people aged 50 and older, poor people, blacks, and people who live in northern climates. For unknown reasons, adenocarcinoma of the stomach is becoming less common in the United States. It is far more common in Japan, China, Chile, and Iceland; in these nations, screening programs are an important means of early detection.

Stomach Cancer
Stomach cancer is simply malignancies of the stomach. Causes, Incidence, And Risk Factors of Stomach Cancer: There are several different types and classifications of stomach cancer . The most common type is called adenocarcinoma, which refers to the way the cancer looks under the microscope. There are several types of adenocarcinoma. Other types of stomach cancer occur much less frequently so this article is focused on adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is a common stomach cancer of the digestive tract worldwide, although it is relatively uncommon in the US. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years old. The incidence of this form of stomach cancer is extremely high in Japan, Chile, and Iceland. The incidence of most types of gastric adenocarcinoma in the US has declined over the years. Experts propose that the decrease may be related to reduced intake of salted, cured, and smoked foods and increased vitamin C consumption. However, the incidence of adenocarcinoma in the proximal parts of the stomach (the gastric cardia and gastroesophageal junction, where the stomach meets the esophagus) has increased markedly, along with an increase in cancers of the lower esophagus. The reason for this increase is unknown.

What is Stomach Cancer?
Any of the cells lining the inner wall of the stomach can become cancerous. The cancer can form a mass or ulcer within the stomach or it can spread diffusely throughout the entire wall of the stomach. Stomach cancer is also called gastric cancer. How common is Stomach Cancer?
Stomach cancer is not uncommon in Singapore. It is the third most common cancer in males in Singapore and the fifth most common cancer among females in Singapore. There is a decreasing trend in the incidence of this cancer. However, rates in Asia are among the highest in the world. Age of Onset
Stomach cancer is commonly found in people aged between 50 and 70 years of age. It is more common in men. Risks and Causes
Patients with stomach cancer have a higher rate of infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. However, the vast majority of people who have this bacterium in their stomachs do not develop stomach cancer.
An increased risk of stomach cancer is associated with diets containing large amounts of smoked foods, salted fish and meat, and pickled foods. On the other hand, eating fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin A and C appear to lower the risk of stomach cancer.

Green Tea May Not Prevent Stomach Cancer
In a reversal of previous research, a comprehensive study shows that drinking green tea offers no protection against stomach cancer.
Gastric cancer was once the leading cause of cancer-related death in most countries, including the United States. Since 1930 the incidence of gastric cancer has steadily decreased throughout the world, with dramatic decreases in the West. In 1994, gastric cancer was the eighth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States
The research team in Japan, followed 26,000 men and women for 8 years and reported that there was no health benefit among those who drank large or small amounts of green tea.

What is Stomach Cancer?
The stomach is part of the digestive system. The upper portion of the stomach is connected to the esophagus and the lower part is connected to the small intestine. Muscles in the stomach wall create a rippling motion that mixes and mashes food, called peristalsis. At the same time, glands in lining of the stomach produce juices to help digest food. Food becomes liquid after three hours in the stomach and passes into the small intestine. Like all other organs in the body, the stomach is made up of many types of cells. Stomach cancer (also called gastric cancer) occurs when malignant (abnormal) cells invade and damage tissues in the stomach. Cancer may develop in any part of the stomach and it may spread into the esophagus or small intestine. Stomach cancer can also grow and extend through the stomach wall and spread to lymph nodes or to other organs like the liver, pancreas and colon.

Stomach (Gastric) Cancer
Stomach cancer is common world-wide, but not so common in the UK. Most cases occur in people over the age of 45. If stomach cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, there is a good chance of a cure. In general, the more advanced the cancer (the more it has grown and spread), the less chance that treatment will be curative. However, treatment can often slow the progress of the cancer.
What is the stomach? The stomach is is in the upper abdomen. It is part of the gastrointestinal tract (the gut). It lies in the upper part of the abdomen, just below the ribs. When we eat, food passes down the oesophagus (gullet) into the stomach. The stomach makes acid which is not essential, but helps to digest food. The muscles in the wall of the stomach contract to mix up the food with the acid. Food then passes into the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). Here food mixes with enzymes (chemicals) which come from the pancreas and lining of the gut. The enzymes break down (digest) the food. Digested food is then absorbed into the body from the small intestine.

Stomach Cancer
Stomach cancer (also called gastric cancer) can occur in any part of the stomach, and may spread to nearby areas like the esophagus or small intestine. Cancer on the stomach's walls can spread to nearby lymph nodes and to the liver, pancreas and colon. While stomach cancer can effect both men and women, men are twice as likely to get stomach cancer than women; the most vulnerable group is men over 50 years old. Researchers have not yet been able to pinpoint specific causes of stomach cancer. Other than age and family history, this cancer seems to be linked to diet: A high intake of foods preserved by pickling, drying, salting or smoking in your diet may put you at risk. Research also suggests that certain types of dust and fumes may be linked to stomach cancer. Like all cancers, early detection is your best weapon in beating this form of cancer. Studies show that if stomach cancer is treated in its early stages, the survival rate is about 70%; if treated later, the rate drops to around 15-20%.

Mouse study questions long-held belief about disease origins By Serena Gordon
HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, Nov. 26 (HealthDayNews) Stomach cancer may originate from bone marrow cells rather than stomach cells, as was previously believed. A new study in mice found that stomach cancer cells began as bone marrow cells that had migrated to the stomach. The bone marrow cells traveled to the stomach in response to inflammation caused by an infection with the bacterium that causes ulcers, Helicobacter pylori These findings, published in the Nov. 26 issue of Science , are in stark contrast to the commonly held belief that cancers originate from the tissue in the surrounding area, meaning that it was believed that stomach cancer begins from stomach stem cells. "In the last five years or so, we've learned that bone marrow-derived stem cells can go to sites of injury and mimic epithelial cells [from that region], which raised the possibility that bone marrow cells could play a role in the development of cancer in that area," said one of the study's authors, Dr. Timothy Wang, chief of the division of digestive and liver diseases at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. Most of the study was done while Wang was working at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. "This study was designed to ask the question: Which is the cell of origin for stomach cancer?" Wang added.

Researchers suspect lifestyle changes played a part FRIDAY, Feb. 6 (HealthDayNews) Stomach cancer rates have declined rapidly in Europe, says a study in the current issue of the Annals of Oncology The study found stomach cancer rates in European Union (EU) countries fell by half between 1980 and 1999, by 45 percent in Eastern Europe, and by 40 percent in Russia. During that time, stomach cancer rates in the EU declined from 18.6 per 100,000 to 9.8 per 100,000. In Eastern Europe, the rates went from 27.9 per 100,000 to 16.1 per 100,000 and from 51.6 to 32 in the Russian Federation. Denmark had the lowest rate of stomach cancer in the late 1990s, at 5.2 per 100,000 in men and 2.7 per 100,000 in women. While the reasons for the decline are complex and not fully understood, the study suggests a number of possible factors. These include: a more varied and affluent diet; better food conservation, including refrigeration; reduced smoking; and better control of Helicobacter pylori infection a bacterium linked to stomach cancer.
