Cancer of the Stomach Roughly 23,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United states. It is 10 times more common in Japan, occurring more frequently in men than in women and in African-Americans. The average age at the time of diagnosis is 60 years. Unfortunately, most patients are diagnosed in advanced stages when cure is not possible. Cause: The actual cause of stomach cancer is unknown. However, people with blood type A and a history of pernicious anemia are at a greater risk of developing this cancer. Signs and symptoms: Cancer of the stomach can grow for a long time without causing any problems. Most patients are diagnosed in advanced stages and present with any of the following signs:
  • Abdominal pain Weight loss Nausea, vomiting, vomiting blood. Anemia
Diagnosis: When suspected, an endoscopy study of the stomach should be performed. This procedure will allow for obtaining a biopsy at the same time. A CT scan or Ultrasound examination of the abdomen may establish the extent of the cancer. Staging: Endoscopic ultrasound is a very sensitive study that should be done to determine the depth of invasion of the cancer into the tissues around the stomach, as well as evaluation of the local

It may be an activity, such as smoking, diet, family history, or many other things. Different diseases, including cancers, have different risk factors. Although these factors can increase a person's risk, they do not necessarily cause the disease. Some people with one or more risk factors never develop the disease, while others develop disease and have no known risk factors. But, knowing your risk factors to any disease can help to guide you into the appropriate actions, including changing behaviors and being clinically monitored for the disease.
Stomach Cancer
What is stomach cancer?
Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is cancer that starts in any part of the stomach. The stomach is just one of many organs located in the abdomen, the area of the body between the chest and the pelvis. Among other organs found in the abdomen are the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and colon. It is important to differentiate among these organs, because cancers and other diseases that affect them present different symptoms and are treated differently. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that 22,400 Americans will be newly diagnosed with stomach cancer during 2003. Most people diagnosed with stomach cancer are in their 60s and 70s.

Stomach Cancer Stomach cancer  (gastric cancer) is cancer that starts in any part of the stomach. Stomach cancer symptoms are different from those of other types of abdominal cavity organ cancers and it is also treated differently. The American Cancer Society estimates approximately 22,400 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer per year. Most of these people are in their 60s and 70s when diagnosed. Although the incidence of most forms of stomach cancer has been declining, the incidence of gastroesophageal junction cancer (cancer where the esophagus meets the stomach) has been rising over the last 20 years. Researchers are unsure of the reason for this increase but think that it may be related to eating foods with nitrates.
Risk Factors for Stomach Cancer
Besides diet, other causes of stomach cancer can include infection with the H. pylori bacteria, smoking tobacco, a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or Barrett's esophagus, or a family history of gastrointestinal cancer. Stanford researchers are especially active investigating the role of H. pylori infection in the cause of stomach cancer, and what impact it may have on treatment of cancer.

Stomach Cancer Symptoms
Stomach cancer is also known as gastric cancer. As the name suggest the cancer begins to develop in the stomach. The stomach can be divided in five different layers and cancer can develop in any of these. Mucosa is the most innermost layer. The stomach acid and the digestive juices are made in this layer. The next layer is the sub-mucosa. This is surrounded by the muscularis. This is a layer of muscle where it moves and mixes the stomach contents. The next two layers are the subserosa and the serosa. They wrap the stomach with serosa being the outermost layer. Most stomach cancer begins in the mucosa. As like most cancers, stomach cancers grow slowly over many years. If left untreated the cancer can grow deeper and infect the other layers. The deeper it goes the chances of a cure minimizes. It is very hard to detect stomach cancer during the early stages, because the symptoms often come and go unnoticed. As cancer progress changes begin to occur in the lining. Symptoms like the following will occur:
  • Lack of appetite follow with unintended weight loss Weakness and fatigue Pain in the abdominal area Hazy discomfort in the abdomen, usually above the navel

The stomach cancer rate in the United States and the number of deaths from this disease have gone down dramatically over the past 60 years. Researchers have learned that some people are more likely than others to develop stomach cancer. The disease is found most often in people over age 55. It affects men twice as often as women, and is more common in African Americans than in Caucasians. Also, stomach cancer is more common in some parts of the worldsuch as Japan, Korea, parts of Eastern Europe, and Latin Americathan in the United States. People in these areas eat many foods that are preserved by drying, smoking, salting, or pickling. Scientists believe that eating foods preserved in these ways may play a role in the development of stomach cancer. On the other hand, fresh foods (especially fresh fruits and vegetables and properly frozen or refrigerated fresh foods) may protect against this disease. Stomach ulcers do not appear to increase a person's risk of developing stomach cancer. However, some studies suggest that a type of bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, which may cause stomach inflammation and ulcers, may be an important risk factor for this disease. Also, research shows that people who have had stomach surgery or have pernicious anemia, achlorhydria, or gastric atrophy (which generally result in lower than normal amounts of digestive juices) have an increased risk of stomach cancer.

Stomach Cancer Facts
24,000 people are diagnosed with stomach cancer each year in the United States. According to the National Cancer Institute, the rate of stomach cancer occurrences in the United States has decreased over the last 60 years. The number of stomach cancer deaths has also fallen in the U.S. over the same period of the time.
Stomach Cancer Diagnosis Tests
Several tests are used in stomach cancer diagnosis . One test used to diagnose stomach cancer is an upper gastrointestinal tract x-ray. This stomach cancer diagnostic test is sometimes called an upper GI x-ray. In this stomach cancer test, the patient drinks a barium solution. The barium is used to outline the stomach on the x-rays. This stomach cancer test can also help the doctor find other tumors or abnormal areas. Another stomach cancer diagnostic test is called a fecal occult blood test. This test is use to check for blood in the stool which can be a symptom of stomach cancer. Having blood in the stool does not necessarily mean that you have stomach cancer.

Overview Although the incidence of stomach cancer has declined dramatically in the United States and Western Europe in the last 50 years, the disease remains a serious problem in much of the rest of the world, where it's a leading cause of cancer death. This global variation is almost certainly linked to two factors that play a major role in the development of stomach cancer: Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria and the type of diet.

Professor David Cunningham, an expert in stomach cancer from the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, said: "Anyone experiencing significant indigestion or heartburn for the first time, over the age of 50 should certainly be seen by their GP." The cells appear to migrate to the stomach to try to repair damage caused by a bacterial infection. The finding challenges many of the previous assumptions about how cancers originate, and could lead to new treatments, the scientists say. The Columbia University research is published in the journal Science. This was an unexpected finding, which may lead to a re-evaluation of current assumptions about how all cancers originate.
Professor Timothy Wang Stomach cancer has long been associated with infection by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which is also known to cause ulcers. It was thought that the bacteria irritated the lining of the stomach wall, causing tissue damage, inflammation and stimulating the cells to become cancerous. The Columbia research, on mice, suggests that the presence of H. pylori is indeed a trigger for cancer.

Stomach cancer
Definition
Stomach cancer (also known as gastric cancer ) is a disease in which the cells forming the inner lining of the stomach become abnormal and start to divide uncontrollably, forming a mass or a tumor. Description
Stomach cancer is the seventh most common cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that 23,000 new cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed in 1998 and about 14,000 people will die of the disease. Stomach cancer is much more common in countries such as Japan, Chile, Costa Rica, Hungary, and Poland. It is a leading cause of cancer deaths in many countries in central Asia, central Europe, and central and South America. In the United States, there has been a dramatic drop in the incidence of stomach cancer in the last 50 years. While the exact reason for this decline is not known, it may be related to a decreased use of salting and smoking foods as a means of preserving them and an increased use of refrigeration. The disease is three times more common in men than in women. It is generally found in people who are 40 years or older. The average age at first diagnosis is 60 years.

However, advanced stomach cancer can be managed and symptoms relieved. After a diagnosis of stomach cancer, you will have your own treatment plan. The plan is tailored to the size, location and extent of the tumor, the stage of the disease (whether it's spread beyond the stomach or not) and other factors such as overall health. Surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy are all used to treat stomach cancer. Biological therapy (also called immunotherapy) is another option. It boosts the immune system so the body can better attack cancer cells. You will likely have a mix of these therapies.
