If you or a friend or relative have been diagnosed with cancer, you will find much more detailed information on our patient information site, CancerHelp UK Summary Stomach cancer is the 5th most common cancer for men and the 9th most common cancer for women in the UK. Each year, there are nearly 5,800 new cases of stomach cancer in men and over 3,300 cases in women. Stomach cancer develops from cells within the stomach. More than 9 in 10 stomach cancers affect the cells of the inner lining of the stomach. Stomach cancer can spread to nearby organs in the abdomen, or, through the wall of the stomach, to distant organs and lymph nodes. Risk factors
  • Helicobacter pylori infection
Helicobacter pylori infection is a common bacterial infection of the stomach lining. It is strongly linked to stomach ulcers and research has shown that people with the infection are 4 to 5 times more likely to develop stomach cancer than those without it.
    Diet
Eating lots of salted, cured and smoked foods may increase the risk of stomach cancer. Research also suggests that eating plenty of fibre, fruit, vegetables and antioxidant vitamins may help protect against the cancer.

        Stomach Cancer
        What is stomach cancer?
Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is cancer that starts in any part of the stomach. The stomach is just one of many organs located in the abdomen, the area of the body between the chest and the pelvis. Among other organs found in the abdomen are the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and colon. It is important to differentiate among these organs, because cancers and other diseases that affect them present different symptoms and are treated differently. The American Cancer Society estimates that 22,400 Americanswill be newly diagnosed with stomach cancer during 2003. Most people diagnosed with stomach cancer are in their 60s and 70s.

Stomach Cancer Cancer Information:
Stomach Cancer Overview
Stomach cancer has decreased as the most common cause of cancer deaths in males in 1930 to one of the less common causes of cancer death today. This decrease in cancer death is almost entirely accounted for by decrease in the incidence of the disease rather than improved treatment or better detection. Stomach cancer remains common in Asia and Japan and first generation immigrants to the U.S. retain a high risk for the disease. The marked decrease in the risk of stomach cancer is unexplained since the cause of stomach cancer is unknown. Changes in diet, food preservation by refrigeration rather than salting and smoking tobacco rather than chewing it have all been cited as possibly contributing to the declining incidence. The stomach is the dilated upper part of the intestinal tube. That tube has an inner lining, a muscular coat and a thin outer layer. Cancers originate in the inner lining of the stomach and can invade into or through the muscular wall of the stomach and can spread to the lymph nodes in the area. The prognosis or likelihood of cure is related to the degree of invasion of the wall of the stomach and the presence or absence of lymph node metastases. Early detection of stomach cancer is difficult because serious symptoms such as pain and weight loss tend to occur only when the cancer is large and early symptoms such as heartburn are much more commonly associated with benign conditions. The finding of blood in the stool may lead to detection of small early cancers. There are no blood tests for early detection of stomach cancer. Only the stool guaiac test for small amounts of blood in the stool and examination of the stomach with an endoscope for heartburn unrelieved by medication will likely lead to early detection of the stomach cancer.

Stomach cancer
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
November 2003 In the UK, stomach - or gastric - cancer is the sixth most common cancer, with about 10,000 people diagnosed each year. Around 6500 of these are men. More than 8 out of 10 cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 60. The success of treatment depends on how early the diagnosis is made.
What is cancer?
The building blocks of the body are tiny cells, which normally repair and reproduce in a controlled process. With cancer, this process goes wrong and cells can divide and grow in an uncontrolled way, causing a lump - a tumour - on or within the part of the body affected. If this tumour contains cells that are able to invade neighbouring tissues or organs, it is known as malignant. If the tumour does not do this it is termed benign, and is not cancer.
The upper digestive tract
The stomach
The lining of the stomach produces a B acid to help digest food and also protect from harmful bacteria. The food is also broken down mechanically by the churning action of the stomach.

What is stomach cancer?
The body is made up of many types of cells. Normally, cells grow, divide and die. Sometimes, cells mutate (change) and begin to grow and divide more quickly than normal cells. Rather than dying, these abnormal cells clump together to form tumors. If these tumors are cancerous (also called "malignant"), they can invade and kill your body's healthy tissues. From these tumors, cancer cells can metastasize (spread) and form new tumors in other parts of the body. By contrast, noncancerous tumors (also called "benign") do not spread to other parts of the body. Return to top
Who is at risk of getting stomach cancer?
Your chances of getting stomach cancer are higher if you have had a stomach infection caused by bacteria called Helicobacter pylori . You are also more likely to get stomach cancer if you:
  • Are a man.
