Stomach cancer, has become relatively uncommon in the United States, it is the most prevalent visceral cancer (second for men, fourth for women). Nevertheless, death rates have been declining since the 1930s to become only about 35% of what they were at that time. The decrease has been worldwide and for unexplained reasons. It remains the most prevalent carcinoma in East Asia, with the rate in Japan being more than seven times that in the United States, accounting for one-third of all cancer deaths on those islands.
The repetitive ingestion of high concentrations of salt irritates the stomach lining, and this has been proposed as a potential cause of gastric cancer. In fact, the decline in the incidence of this disease has been correlated with the decline in the salt preservation of foods. In regions in which stomach cancer remains common, such as Japan, salted seafood has remained a dietary staple. The incidence of gastric cancer among first-generation immigrants from Japan to the West is similar to that in their communities of origin, but it declines to the incidence of the Western community in which the next generation resides.
This suggests that the neoplastic process begins irreversibly during childhood, regardless of relocation or dietary changes after a certain age. Because this is not a genetically determined disease, a generation that has not been exposed to the inducing irritant of salt at a critical age presumably will not suffer inordinately from this neoplasm.

What is stomach cancer?
Stomach cancer is the result of cell changes in the lining of the stomach. In Western Europe, stomach cancer is only about one third as common as it was 50 years ago.
The location of the tumours within the stomach has also changed. It used to be that most of the tumours were located near where the stomach joins the small bowel, now the commonest site is close to the junction with the oesophagus (gullet).
Stomach cancer is very common in Japan and the Japanese have developed an intensive and effective approach to screening for stomach cancer.

What Is Stomach Cancer?
Cancer occurs when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. There are many kinds of cancer and they all come about because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Different types of cancer behave very differently. Lung cancer, breast cancer vaginal cancer , and liver cancer are very different diseases. The diseases grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. People with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their kind of cancer. Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer starts in the stomach. The stomach is divided into five different layers. Cancer can develop in any of these sections. To view the stomach, click here The stomach is composed of five layers. Starting from the inside and working our way out, the innermost layer is called the mucosa . Stomach acid and digestive juices are made in the mucosa layer. The next layer is called the submucosa . The submucosa is surrounded by the muscularis , a layer of muscle that moves and mixes the stomach contents. The next two layers, the

How and Where does the Stomach Work?
The stomach is an expandable sack located mostly under the left lung, between the muscular "diaphragm" which pushes up the lung, and the coiled small intestine. The stomach is close-by important organs in the abdomen. To it's right is the liver , to it's lower left is the spleen , and underneath it is the pancreas . The esophagus enters the stomach at the "gastro-esophageal" junction, while the small intestine exits it at the lowermost "antrum" . The front of the stomach rests on the abdominal wall, and lower parts of it also contact the upper left kidney and "transverse" colon. You can see that the stomach is in the midst of many vital organs, and infections or cancers can spread to these organs. Important areas of the stomach itself (besides the antrum and gastro-esophageal junction) are the "greater curvature" (basically the left wall of the stomach), the "lesser curvature" (the right wall), the "fundus"

Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is the growth of abnormal cells in the lining and wall of the stomach. It occurs mainly in men over 40 years of age. Stomach cancer is difficult to detect in its early stages because it causes few or no symptoms. How does it occur? Several conditions may be precancerous and may increase the risk of stomach cancer. They include:
  • atrophic gastritis, chronic gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), and infection by a certain type of bacteria pernicious anemia: a chronic vitamin-B12 deficiency anemia that occurs in older adults characterized by numbness and tingling in the extremities achlorhydria: low levels or absence of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice.

Stomach Cancer Introduction
The stomach is a muscular bag with a capacity of about 1 liter or quart. It lies along the digestive tract between the esophagus and the small intestine. The stomach serves as a reservoir for food eaten during meals and begins the process of digestion. Its inner walls are composed of glands that secrete acid and digestive enzymes. The most common form of cancer that affects the stomach is adenocarcinoma , which arises in the glands of the innermost layer of the stomach. This tumor tends to spread through the wall of the stomach and from there into the adjoining organs (pancreas and spleen) and lymph nodes. It can spread through the bloodstream and lymph system to distant organs (metastasize).
  • The incidence and death rates for stomach cancer have decreased markedly during the past 60 years. In 1930, stomach cancer was the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among American men. Since then, the death rate in men from stomach cancer in the United States has dropped from 28 to 5 per 100,000 people.
In 1996, about 22,800 new cases of stomach cancer were diagnosed in the United States, and 14,000 Americans died of the disease. This form of cancer is 1.5-2.5 times more common in African American, Hispanic, and Native American people than in whites.

Dietary problems after surgery for stomach cancer
This information is about the possible problems people may have after surgery for stomach cancer . It may also be helpful to people who have had surgery for cancer of the gullet (oesophagus) , as this may involve removal of part of the stomach.
The stomach
The stomach has several main functions. It acts as a reservoir (storage chamber) for food, and mixes food with stomach juices, known as gastric secretions , to begin the process of digestion. Some nutrients from the food that we eat are absorbed through the stomach wall into the bloodstream.
Surgery to the stomach
There are two main types of surgery for stomach cancer:
  • partial gastrectomy , in which only part of the stomach is removed total gastrectomy , in which the whole stomach is removed
Other types of operation on the digestive system may also involve the removal of part, of all, of the stomach. For example, an oesophago-gastrectomy pancreatico-duodenectomy ), the pancreas, stomach and some of the small intestine are removed.
