Conquering a life of immobility
Roger Hollenbaugh of Bandera suffers from Stiff-Person's Syndrome, a puzzling disease with no known cure and an uncertain long-term prognosis despite undeniably real symptoms. Photo by Jessica Hawley Bandera resident learns to live with rare, debilitating disease By Jessica Hawley - Staff Writer Only a few years ago, Roger Hollenbaugh drove an 18-wheeler all over the United States and beyond the country's border into Canada. He enjoyed taking photographs of the vast and varied landscapes to capture the visions he rolled by at 70 mph. "People thought I was nuts that I would take pictures through the windshield," he said. Today, the 37-year-old carefully thumbs through those pictures with rigid fingers, his trucking days a memory. In September 2001, after suffering for more than two years from symptoms that doctors labeled psychosomatic, Hollenbaugh was diagnosed by Dr. Michael Winkelmann, in Jackson, Miss., with stiff-person's syndrome, an extremely rare and, as of yet, scarcely studied neurological disease. Although the cause of stiff-person's syndrome is unknown in most cases, Hollenbaugh believes his case developed while he was receiving treatment for a migraine headache in a Kerrville hospital on July 10, 1998.

10-Oct-2003 Beth Murinson, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Beth B. Murinson is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and has been a faculty member in the Department of Neurology since 2002. Her clinical and research interests are in neuromuscular diseases with special emphasis on peripheral neuropathies, neuropathic pain and Stiff-person syndrome. Dr. Murinson has participated in a wide range of research investigations including nerve structure and function, immune-mediated neurological disorders such as Stiff-person syndrome and multi-disciplinary studies of pain originating from nerve injury and dysfunction. She has recently served as a Visiting Lecturer at King's College, University of London.
Current research includes the characterization of complex assemblies of small nerve fibers important in the sensation of pain. Major alterations in small fibers following painful nerve injuries have been identified at Hopkins and it is anticipated that these findings will expand treatment strategies for painful peripheral neuropathies. Planned research includes developing methods to rapidly evaluate sensory dysfunction and advancing the understanding of Stiff-person syndrome.
Dr. Murinson sees patients by referral at the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center on Tuesday mornings. Contact Nancy Rosenberg at (410) 955-3730 for appointments.
