Nov. 5, 1999 - Garland Neal - 5 minutes old Meet Garland Neal! Children's Medical Center of Dallas (thank God we are only a few minutes away). By the time we got to the hospital I had found a position that allowed him to breathe. The ER doctors realized that something was wrong, but had no idea what it could be. They called in an Ear,Nose and Throat specialist to evaluate Garland Neal. The ENT diagnosed him as having a rare condition called Pierre Robin , which is characterized by a small recessed chin, cleft palate and a tendency for the tongue to ball up in the back of the throat obstructing the airway. The sequence of anomalies is due to Garland Neal's tucked positioning in the womb. The next day a tracheostomy was performed on Garland Neal allowing him to breathe. He spent the next two weeks in Childrens Hospital. Lloyd and I basically had a crash course in nursing to learn how to care for a trach...it was all very overwhelming. Sometimes I will experience a little blurriness in the outside corners of my eyes. It happens to both eyes but seperately. It only lasts a few minutes. I have had my retinas checked but it has been a while. I get worried that it could be something with my retinas but I dont know.
