The condition may be characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, absent menses, multiple cysts on the ovaries, and infertility. Abnormal ovarian function sometimes causes incompletely developed follicles (ova) to accumulate in the ovaries. These ova fail to mature and ovulate, therefore causing them to accumulate as cysts in the ovary and contributing to infertility in the woman. Polycystic ovaries are two to five times as large as normal ovaries, and they have a white, thick, very tough outer covering. This condition is commonly called Stein-Leventhal syndrome, and usually develops shortly after puberty. A woman with polycystic ovaries will stop menstruating (she may not have ever started) or will menstruate erratically. She will gain weight, eventually becoming obese, and may develop excessive amounts of facial or body hair (hirsutism). Some women exhibit virilization.

    What is polycystic ovary syndrome?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder in which many benign cysts form on the ovaries under a thick, white covering. It is most common in women under 30 years old. The ovaries are glands located on either side of the uterus (womb) in a woman's lower abdomen. The ovaries produce the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Before menopause, they also produce eggs. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that result from ovulation cycles. Many ovarian cysts go away without treatment. The most common cysts are just enlargements of normal egg follicles. This disorder has also been called Stein-Leventhal syndrome.
    How does it occur?
Polycystic ovary syndrome is caused by an abnormal production of two hormones by the pituitary gland in the brain. These two hormones are LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone). Imbalance of these hormones prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg each month. The ovaries produce more of the male hormone testosterone. They continue to produce estrogen but not progesterone.
    What are the symptoms?

You can't see them, hear them, or feel them, but the hormones that regulate a girl's reproductive system make themselves known in many ways - they are responsible for her periods, breast development, and other aspects of becoming a woman. Both girls and guys produce hormones called androgens (pronounced: an -druh-junz), which play a role in sexual function. Although androgens are sometimes referred to as male hormones, every female produces them, too. In girls with PCOS, the ovaries produce higher than normal amounts of androgens, and this can interfere with egg development and release. Some of the eggs develop into

description This disorder is characterized by changes to the ovaries such that multiple follicles accumulate in the ovaries without ovulation. The ovary secretes higher levels of testosterone and estrogens. This results in irregular or no menses, excess body hair growth, occasionally baldness, and often obesity, diabetes and hypertension. The main concerns of this condition are body changes (hair excess, obesity) and infertility due to anovulation. Because of the anovulation, women with polycystic ovarian syndrome are at risk for irregular and heavy menstrual bleeding problems, endometrial hyperplasia and even endometrial cancer ( ). They are also thought to be at increased risk for premature heart attacks and cardiac disease due to weight and diabetes effects although this has been recently questioned (

    Polycystic ovary disease
    Definition
Polycystic ovary disease is characterized by enlarged ovaries with multiple small cysts, an abnormally high number of follicles at various states of maturation, and a thick, scarred capsule surrounding each ovary. The syndrome was originally reported by Stein and Leventhal in 1935 when they described a group of women with amenorrhea (absence of menses), infertility hirsutism (unwanted hair growth in women), and enlarged polycystic ovaries. Today, it is known that those with polycystic ovaries may have some, but not necessarily all, of the "classic" symptoms included in Stein-Leventhal syndrome.
    Alternative Names
Polycystic ovaries; Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS); Stein-Leventhal syndrome; Polyfollicular ovarian disease.
    Causes
Polycystic ovary disease is an endocrine disorder, which means normal hormone cycles are disrupted. Hormones direct many functions throughout the body. For example, hormones regulate reproductive functions, including the normal development of ova (eggs) in the ovaries. It is not completely understood why or how hormone cycles are disrupted, although there are several working theories. In polycystic ovary disease, under-developed follicles accumulate in the ovaries. Follicles are sacs within the ovaries that contain ova. The ova in these follicles fail to mature and, therefore, cannot be released from the ovaries. Instead, they accumulate as cysts in the ovary. This can contribute to infertility. The lack of follicular maturation and inability to ovulate are likely caused by low levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and higher-than-normal levels of androgens (male hormones) produced in the ovary.

    Stein-Leventhal Syndrome
Stein-Leventhal syndrome: A hormonal problem that causes women to have various symptoms, including irregular or no menstruation, acne, obesity, and excess hair growth. Women with PCO do not ovulate (release an egg for fertilization) every month. They are at a higher risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer of the uterus (endometrial cancer). Much of this risk can be reversed by exercise and weight loss. Medication is generally prescribed to induce regular menstruation, reducing the cancer risk. For acne and excess hair growth, the diuretic medication spironolactone (brand name: Aldactazide) can help. Clomiphene (brand name: Clomid) can be used to induce ovulation if pregnancy is desired. A type of surgery called a wedge resection, in which a piece of the ovary is removed, seems to help some women. No one is sure what causes PCO, but the ovaries of women with PCO contain a number of small cysts. Also known as polycystic ovarian disease (PCO).

Stein-Leventhal syndrome In the UK, up to 33% of women have polycystic ovaries (i.e. 10 or more follicles per ovary detected on ultrasound) (1). Of these, an estimated 33% have polycystic ovarian syndrome, generally defined in the UK as polycystic ovaries together with one or more characteristic features (hirsutism, acne, male-pattern baldness, amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea, or raised serum concentrations of testosterone and/or luetinising hormone) (2,3). In polycystic ovarian syndrome the associated metabolic abnormalities (abnormal serum lipid concentrations and insulin resistance) also put some women at an increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus (4).

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of numerous cysts (fluid-filled sacs) on the ovaries associated with high male hormone levels, chronic anovulation (absent ovulation), and other metabolic disturbances. Classic symptoms include excess facial and body hair, acne obesity , irregular menstrual cycles, and infertility Description
PCOS, also called Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a group of symptoms caused by underlying hormonal and metabolic disturbances that affects about 6% of premenopausal women. PCOS symptoms appear as early as adolescence in the form of amenorrhea (missed periods), obesity, and hirsutism , the abnormal growth of body hair. A disturbance in normal hormonal signals prevents ovulation in women with PCOS. Throughout the cycle, estrogen levels remain steady, LH levels are high, and FSH and progesterone levels are low. Since eggs are rarely or never released from their follicles, multiple ovarian cysts develop over time.

Definition: Stein-Leventhal syndrome is an accumulation of many incompletely developed follicles in the ovaries. This condition is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, scanty or absent menses , multiple small cysts on the ovaries (polycystic ovaries), mild hirsutism (excessive hair), and infertility . Many women who have this condition also have diabetes with insulin resistance.
