Polycystic ovary disease
Definition: Polycystic ovary disease is characterized by enlarged ovaries with multiple small cysts, an abnormally high number of follicles at various states of maturation, and a thick, scarred capsule surrounding each ovary. The syndrome was originally reported by Stein and Leventhal in 1935 when they described a group of women with amenorrhea (absence of menses), infertility hirsutism (unwanted hair growth in women), and enlarged polycystic ovaries. Today, it is known that those with polycystic ovaries may have some, but not necessarily all, of the "classic" symptoms included in Stein-Leventhal syndrome.
Alternative Names: Polycystic ovaries; Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS); Stein-Leventhal syndrome; Polyfollicular ovarian disease.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Stein-Leventhal Syndrome)
What is polycystic ovary syndrome?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder in which many benign cysts form on the ovaries under a thick, white covering. It causes your menstrual cycle to be irregular or you may have no periods at all. PCOS can make it hard for you to become pregnant. It causes other problems as well. The two ovaries are part of the female reproductive system. They produce eggs and the female hormonesestrogen and progesterone. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on the ovaries when the follicles (sacs) on the ovary that contain an egg mature but do not release the egg into the fallopian tube. PCOS increases your risk of uterine cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. If you have PCOS, it is important for you to be checked by your health care provider for these other problems and to get treatment to help prevent these problems.

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a common endocrine abnormality that affects five to ten percent of women of reproductive age. PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility. It can also influence a woman's cardiovascular health and have other serious implications for her health and lifestyle. PCOS is generally considered a syndrome rather than a disease (although it is sometimes called Polycystic Ovary Disease) because it manifests itself through a group of signs and symptoms that can occur in any combination, rather than having one known cause or presentation. PCOS, also known Stein-Leventhal syndrome, can include the following symptoms or increase a woman's risk for the following conditions:

Polycystic ovarian disease (PCO), also known by the name Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a hormonal problem that causes women to have a variety of symptoms including:
  • Irregular or no periods Acne Obesity , and
  • Excess hair growth.
  • Any of the above symptoms and signs may be absent with the exception of irregular or no periods. All women with PCO will have irregular or no menses. Women who have PCO do not regularly ovulate; that is, they do not release an egg every month. This is why they do not have regular periods. No one is quite sure what causes PCO. However, the ovaries of women with PCO frequently contain a number of small cysts, hence the name poly (many) cystic ovarian disease. A similar number of cysts may occur in women without PCO. Therefore, the cysts themselves do not seem to be the cause of the problem. A malfunction of the body's blood sugar control system (insulin system) is frequent in women with PCO. The result is an inadequate response to insulin (insulin resistance) that can lead to abnormally elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels. The insuliin disturbance is thought to also be the trigger for the development of symptoms such as acne and excess hair growth that is seen with PCO.

You Are Not Alone! Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex endocrine disturbance found in 5 - 30% of the world's female population. First diagnosed in 1935 as Stein - Levinthal Syndrome, it is one of the most common causes of
infertility, and yet it still is misdiagnosed in most cases.
The symptoms of PCOS vary within each individual, but common complaints include: irregular menstrual periods, male pattern baldness, obesity or unexplained weight gain, excessive facial and/or body hair, insulin resistance and infertility. Women who have PCOS have an increased risk of adult onset diabetes, hypertension, early onset heart disease, cancers of the reproductive organs, and a higher chance of miscarriage and infertility. Though there is currently no cure for this disorder, it can be controlled to an extent with certain medications and a proper diet.

In a normal ovary, a single egg develops and is released during ovulation each month. A polycystic ovary will have many eggs that are never released. What is going on in the body? Polycystic ovarian syndrome often begins with puberty and worsens with time. The cause of PCOS has not yet been completely identified. The symptoms of PCOS are related to an excess of the hormone androgen. This hormone can cause male features such as facial hair and male-pattern baldness in women. Polycystic ovaries may be normal in size, or they may be enlarged, with smooth, thick coverings. What are the causes and risks of the disease?

Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Stein-Leventhal syndrome is an accumulation of many incompletely developed follicles in the ovaries. This condition is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, scanty or absent menses , multiple small cysts on the ovaries (polycystic ovaries), mild hirsutism, and infertility . Many women who have this condition also have diabetes with insulin resistance.
Alternative Names: Polycystic ovaries; Sclerocystic ovarian disease; Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Abnormal ovarian function sometimes causes incompletely developed follicles (ova) to accumulate in the ovaries. These ova fail to mature and ovulate, therefore causing them to accumulate as cysts in the ovary and contributing to infertility in the woman. Polycystic ovaries are two to five times as large as normal ovaries, and they have a white, thick, very tough outer covering. This condition is commonly called Stein-Leventhal syndrome, and usually develops shortly after puberty. A woman with polycystic ovaries will stop menstruating (she may not have ever started) or will menstruate erratically. She will gain weight, eventually becoming

Common characteristics of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome include an accumulation of cysts on the ovaries, an appreciable increase in male hormone levels, chronic anovulation and irregular menstruation. Other symptoms present also include excess facial and body hair, male pattern baldness, acne, skin discoloration, obesity and infertility. Treatments are aimed at alleviating symptoms. These include medication to correct anovulation and to establish a regular menstrual cycle, and topical and oral medication for acne. A regular exercise regime and a healthy diet may also be prescribed for excessive weight gain. In some instances, weight loss reduce the levels of androgens and counter its effects. In some cases, surgery is necessary to treat Polycystic Ovary. Women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome are at a greater risk for endometriosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and uterine cancer. Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome entails comprehensive tests of hormone levels and gynecologic ultrasound study. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome has common symptoms with other disorders so a thorough examination is necessary. Not all symptoms are necessary for the diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Women may have polycystic ovaries and still have regular menstruation and the reverse can also be true. Physicians look at menstrual and hormonal abnormalities and should consider the complete clinical picture to make the diagnosis.

Alternative Names: Polycystic ovaries; Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS); Stein-Leventhal syndrome; Polyfollicular ovarian disease.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Polycystic ovary disease is an endocrine disorder, which means normal hormone cycles are disrupted. Hormones direct many functions throughout the body. For example, hormones regulate reproductive functions, including the normal development of ova (eggs) in the ovaries. It is not completely understood why or how hormone cycles are disrupted, although there are several working theories. In polycystic ovary disease, under-developed follicles accumulate in the ovaries. Follicles are sacs within the ovaries that contain ova. The ova in these follicles fail to mature and, therefore, cannot be released from the ovaries. Instead, they accumulate as cysts in the ovary. This can contribute to infertility. The lack of follicular maturation and inability to ovulate are likely caused by low levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and higher-than-normal levels of androgens (male hormones) produced in the ovary.
