ABP (Always Be Prepared): Personal Contingency Plans
After hearing countless news stories and reports of the hurricane victims being in a new situation of having lost everything, and now having to go through what is most likely an extremely frustrating scenario of trying to pick up the pieces, history and paper trail of documents of their lives, it got me to thinking – how many of us have a personal contingency plan? Our companies and corporations have the forethought to keep important documents and records off-site in case of a disaster. Individuals arguably have just as many (in perspective) important documents following them and controlling their livelihoods to some extent. So why don’t we take the same care in protection? Fast Company has an article this month which discusses the attributes of great leaders . The article stresses, based on some research done by Harvard Business School, those great leaders can be essentially drilled down to three types – entrepreneurial, managerial and charismatic – all having an affinity for understanding what they call “contextual intelligence” of the world around them.

Squint at your mobile? There is another way
Ina Fried and Michael Kanellos
CNET News.com
For those who have squinted to read text on their mobile phones, Stanford University researchers think they have hit upon a better way: doing it one word at a time. The technique, known as Rapid Serial Visual Presentation, or RSVP, makes up for the tiny screens on mobile phones by presenting just one word at a time in the centre of the screen for a fraction of a second before moving on to the next word. As a result, each word is far easier to read than with standard presentations, in which a sentence or two of much smaller type scroll across the screen at a time. In a demo version of the software, dubbed BuddyBuzz, the user decides how fast the text scrolls. At its fastest, the words fly far faster than a reader can sound them out. But those who learn to read words without pronouncing them in their heads can actually read as many as 1,000 words a minute, making it potentially far faster than traditional methods of scrolling.

SENTINEL CORRESPONDENT Film enthusiasts looking for the latest in East European cinema will get a rare opportunity this weekend to see "Squint Your Eyes," the film that scampered off with the best new director award at last year’s San Francisco International Film Festival and has won various awards at Cannes and elsewhere. "Squint Your Eyes" is another intriguing offering from the resurgent Polish film industry, which gave the world Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski. Thanks go to Nickelodeon Theater and locally owned MGE distributors for allowing film lovers to see the film locally. Set on an abandoned farm in the Polish hinterland, the film concerns the property’s caretaker and a runaway teenage girl he was once hired to tutor. She’s headstrong, at loose ends and has already fallen among thieves. She’s staying with the caretaker, who she is drawn to as a father figure, a person her nouveau riche parents consider "a nobody." The abandoned farm is the setting for a series of vignettes involving different characters, who for one reason or another, stop by to visit or hang out. All of them come to see the caretaker, as if seeking something from him which he seems unable to give them.

Web thinking
An excellent piece from Ryan Tomayko at lesscode.org about grokking the Web. A couple of comments in particular, caught my eye; The great majority of experience with systems was not had with the constraints of the web in place. This makes conclusions drawn from observation of existing working systems, as well as recommendations based on them, extremely unreliable. And quoting Adam Bosworth How did the web happen? People take it for granted. You just assume that there's always been the web. You know, in the beginning there was the web and the web was good and so on but that actually isn't true. Indeed-y-do. Ryan also graciously lists me amoungst those who understand the situation he describes, and makes this observation about my email address; Mark Baker's username is always distobj (Distributed Object) because he was a big CORBA head. True, initially. I picked that moniker in '95, IIRC, when I was the local CORBA guru at, what was at the time, the largest publically under development CORBA project. But I continue to use it not because of momentum, nor because I'm still a fan of CORBA (I'm not, if you wondered 8-), but because I see the World Wide Web as the uber distributed object system that I've been looking for since my university days. I just had to squint a little to

http://www.aravind.org/patient/squint.htm
Squint
What is Squint?
Squint is misalignment of the eyes such that the right and left eyes are pointed in different directions. Though it is a common condition among younger populations, affecting 2 to 4 percent of children, it may also appear later in life. The misalignment may be permanent or it may be temporary, occurring occasionally. The deviation may be in any direction: inward, outward, upward or downward.
Squint may be caused by any of the following:
  • Weakened muscles or abnormal nerve impulses to the eye muscles
  • Heredity
  • Blurred or poor vision
  • Pathology inside the eye, such as cataract
Signs and Symptoms
The primary sign of squint is an eye that is not straight. Sometimes, a youngster will squint or close one eye in bright sunlight. Faulty depth perception may be present. Some children turn their faces or tilt their heads in a specific direction in order to use their eyes together.
Treatment
Parents often get the false impression that a child may "outgrow" the problem. If a child's two eyes are pointed in different directions, examination by an ophthalmologist is necessary to determine the cause and to begin treatment. The goals of treatment are to preserve vision, straighten the eyes and to restore binocular vision. Treatment of squint depends upon the exact cause of the misaligned eyes. It can be directed towards unbalanced muscles or other conditions which are causing the eyes to point in two different directions. After a complete eye examination, including a detailed study of the inner parts of the eye, an ophthalmologist can recommend appropriate optical, medical or surgical therapy.

    Loosen that brow
[vote for against Like many slightly short-sighted people, only one of my eyes is dysfunctional. I don't want the burden of being bespectacled, but the alternative is too hideous to contemplate. Unless your over 70, or an underground scientist, or an English gent in the courtrooms of the 1890s, a monocle just isn't a fitting fashion garment in this day and age. I believe this is largely to do with the 'squint factor', as monocles must necessarily be clasped twixt brow and preopercular. I thought about various monocle attachment methods. Perhaps a sticky rim (so to speak), which fixes snugly to the underside of the eye socket. Or some kind of hair-clasp attached to the top of the monocle, to grapple the eyebrow. However I believe the best method, what with today's predilection for piercing, is to drill a small hole into the side of the nose and simply screw in the monocle. Easy, secure, and removes the side-effect of a Popeye-magnitude squint.

  • What is a squint?

  • What causes a squint?
  • How will a squint affect my child?
What is a squint? A squint or strabismus occurs when the eyes are not aligned properly, e.g. one eye may turn inwards, outwards, up or down. When one eye turns the eyes can no longer work together as a pair and a squint develops. This may occur at any age and commonly occurs when someone is longsighted. A squint is a binocular vision problem. Untreated squints can lead to loss of vision (lazy eye) in the squinting eye and should always be assessed by an Orthoptist even if only seen some of the time. A child is never too young to be examined or for treatment to commence. Often, the sooner treatment is started, the better the results. It is never too late to treat a squint which is cosmetically unacceptable and glasses, prisms or surgery can give good results in many cases. When do squints develop? Squints can occur at any age. A baby can be born with a squint or develop one soon after birth. This is called Infantile squint. Sometimes a baby has a pseudo squint where the shape of the face may give the appearance of a squint, although there is not a true deviation of the eyes. In these cases, the appearance will improve as the child grows. A baby will not grow out of a true squint and should be assessed at the earliest opportunity. Where the eye wanders some of the time and appears straight otherwise, this is still a squint and can be the sign of an underlying problem. What causes a squint?
