"It is often asked at what age should treatment no longer be attempted. The answer is, everyone deserves a chance! Age should not be a deterrent..." Strabismus What is it?
Strabismus, more commonly known as crossed-eyes, is a vision condition in which a person can not align both eyes simultaneously under normal conditions. One or both of the eyes may turn in, out, up or down. An eye turn may be constant (when the eye turns all of the time) or intermittent (turning only some of the time, such as, under stressful situations or when ill). Whether constant or intermittent , strabismus always requires appropriate evaluation and treatment. Learn all about strabismus "Children do not 'outgrow' eye turns! Early detection and treatment advised!" Who has strabismus?
It is estimated that up to 5 percent of all children have some type or degree of strabismus. Children with strabismus may initially have double vision. This occurs because of the misalignment of the two eyes in relation to one another. In an attempt to avoid double vision, the brain will eventually disregard the image of one eye (called suppression). Childhood Squint
Squint is the term used when the eyes are not exactly straight. When looking at an object, normal eyes will look exactly in the same direction. This is required for the light to fall on exactly the same parts of the two retinas (the backs of the eyes). If a squint is present the two eyes cannot focus on exactly the same point. Are there different types?
  • The severity can vary. Some squints are very marked and obvious. Some only become noticeable when the child is tired. Some are quite small and are only discovered by a proper examination.
  • The cause can vary. Sometimes they are due to muscle or nerve problems of the eye. Sometimes eye diseases cause a squint. However, the majority are due to one eye being more longsighted than the other. In this common situation one eye has to 'strain' more than the other to see clearly and this can lead to a squint.
  • The direction can vary. Most are convergent ie . the squinting eye tends to look inwards. However, the squinting eye can be divergent (looking outward) or looking up or down.

  • Why is it important?

    Squint (strabismus)
A squint is the common name for 'strabismus' which is the medical term used to describe eyes that are not pointing in the same direction. Squints are also sometimes called 'lazy eye' or 'cast' according to the direction of the turn of the eye. The squint may be present all or only part of the time, in only one eye or alternating between the two eyes. A squint can occur for a number of reasons:
    • Refractive (focusing) abnormality Eye muscle imbalance
These separately or together cause squint.
    • It can run in families Illness - can make it obvious Injury Rarely, it can be due to other diseases or illness.
Treatment of squints is different for adults and children. Some or much of the treatment you will undergo will be in the orthoptics department of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

    Childhood squint
Squint is relatively common in children, and 2-3% of the population are born with a squint. Treatment is advisable as soon as possible, and can be most effective in very young children. In order to focus both eyes on an object all the eye muscles of each eye must be balanced and work together. When one eye turns, that eye is not focused properly which can lead to a deterioration of vision in the squinting eye. Some babies may appear to have a squint that is not a true squint. It is called 'epicanthus' and is caused by folds of skin on a wide nose. Epicanthus does not exclude the possibility of a squint being present and so you should always seek an expert opinion. If your child has been referred to Moorfields, they will attend the outpatient orthoptics clinic where they will be seen by one of our orthoptists who will decide on the best course of treatment. If your child has been diagnosed with a squint, it will be managed or treated by one or more of:

ictorial art is an old tradition among the Indians of the Plains. Long ago men painted pictures of their triumphs on buffalo robes and hide shirts. Once non-native trade materials became available in the 19th century, many drawings were done on paper, often in bound books such as account ledgers or ruled notebooks. One of the best known groups of Plains artists was among the men held prisoner at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida, from 1875-1878. Working far away from home, they developed a distinctive style quite different than that of the many artists who remained in their home communities. Squint Eyes (Tichkematse), a Cheyenne, was one of these prisoner artists.
Once the Fort Marion prisoners returned
to their homes in Indian Territory (now western Oklahoma) their art production almost ceased. Squint Eyes' drawings are one of only two sets of drawings known to have been produced by the prisoners after their return home (until decades later when a few artists created drawings for anthropologist James Mooney). Produced between 1886 and 1887 at Fort Supply, Oklahoma, Squint Eyes' drawings form an important chapter in the story of Plains Indian pictorial art. They provide a valuable insider perspective on Plains Indian life, as well as an unexpected view of Indian-Army interactions.

Steve Taylor Debuts Squint Entertainment AFTER NUMEROUS INDUSTRY rumors of Steve Taylor starting his own label, Taylor has partnered with Word Entertainment, specifically Myrrh Records, to form Squint Entertainment. The new company, based in Nashville and Los Angeles, will be multifaceted, delivering albums, CD-ROMS and films. The first venture, an album from Sixpence None the Richer, is slated to bow Nov. 4 to the CBA market through Word Distribution. Describing the Word/Squint relationship as "simpatico," Loren Balman, executive vice president of Word Entertainment, said this new venture is part of the bigger picture he alluded to in a recent article [THE CCM UPDATE, May 19], regarding Word's future development of "emerging genres." "We shared a common vision of wanting to see something broadly defined specifically on the modern art side," said Taylor, "to create modern art with Christians whose work and lifestyle honor God through beauty, goodness and truth, and to try to reach the widest possible audience." Is Taylor concerned that the same financial scenario that plagued Charlie Peacock's re:think label [THE CCM UPDATE, June 23] could repeat itself? "I've really done my homework and talked with several people, including Charlie and Bob Briner," Taylor said. "They both echoed some of the same things. In summary, they said, 'Make sure you've got deep pockets.'"

You look on it with a little bit of suspicion and your face all squinched up. Squint is the stubbornly elusive objects and images of the six very different artists: Fred Cray, Lars Kremer, Norm Paris, Mark Shetabi, Devorah Sperber and Allen Yates. Ready your eyeball muscles for a worksome effort. Lars Kremer delivers a simple turquoise Deco dragonfly, luminous and stately in its small lightbox. But look close and the insect bursts into the rhythmic dance of a thousand surreal goddess portraits of renowned choreographer Noemie LaFrance.

The top offenders in terms of data transfer, number of files transferred and on-line time are reported. squint now also generates a detailed history for each person which can be viewed with a browser. squint is useful for discovering problems with internet usage patterns. To determine on-line time, it is guesstimated that after a "hit" the person is reading the page for the following two minutes. So the measurement of on-line time is unreliable, but the system does provide a warning that investigation may be warranted. squint periodically analyzes your proxy server logs, and produces linked html pages like this Information Audience : system administrators and management.
