Welcome to our web site. It is truly a privilege to have you here. Thank you for coming. Please take some time to browse through our site by selecting the topics on the left and "clicking" on them. After a lot of thought and prayer, I have chosen to move my practice from Albany to Tifton where I have joined the physicians of Georgia Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic (Drs. Jim Scott, William Smith, Michael Patterson, and Jayson McMath) to head up their spinal division. Sometimes when a physician moves his practice, there can be rumors that the physician was unhappy with a previous group, a hospital, or a medical community. I can honestly say that I was blessed during my time in Albany with great partners at Southwest Georgia Orthopedics and Sports Medicine; outstanding hospitals through my affiliations with Palmyra, Phoebe, Worth County, and Crisp County Hospitals; and a diverse medical community. I will always be thankful for my time in Albany, but also feel excited and "led" to come to Tifton and continue my regional spine practice to serve the people of South Georgia.
Our Mission
The mission at our center is to provide compassionate, specialized, Christian care to patients with orthopedic and spinal disorders; with an emphasis on the surgical treatment of patients who have failed non-operative care, further emphasizing minimally invasive surgical techniques, when appropriate.

We have pioneered endoscopic surgical approaches to disorders of the spine, achieving excellent results in selected patients. These minimally invasive techniques reduce post-operative pain, shorten hospital stays, speed the recovery process, reduce the disability related to shoulder girdle dysfunction that occurs with open thoracotomy procedures, and facilitate early return to work. The success of these methods has prompted invitations to teach these techniques to spinal surgeons around the country. Thoracic Spine
Thoracoscopic spinal surgery is appropriate for patients with:

Fellowship in Spine Surgery This program in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center is built on the philosophy of decreasing supervision with increasing responsibility. It provides comprehensive training in the surgical and conservative treatment of spinal disorders, covering pediatric spinal disorders, cervical spine, acute spinal injuries, degenerative disorders, adult deformities and tumors. The emphasis is on patient care, surgery, and research. Fellows work with orthopedic residents and medical students, and have teaching responsibilities. Weekly indications conferences, weekly combined pediatric-adult spine deformity conferences, monthly neurosurgery-orthopedic surgery conferences, and monthly research meetings are organized. Journal clubs and anatomy laboratory teaching sessions are also organized. Fellows are responsible for at least two clinical or basic science research projects and several lectures. Research facilities in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery include the biomechanics laboratory, lifting and gait laboratories, biomaterial and histopathology laboratories, biochemistry and molecular biology, and an animal surgery facility. This fellowship is ACGME accredited for three fellows per year and participates in the match program.

There are many types of back and neck disorders that affect the majority of the population in the United States. Injury, aging, general health, and lifestyle may influence the development of some conditions. Most spinal disorders are known to result from soft tissue injury, structural injury, and degenerative, or congenital conditions. Spinal Nerve Disorders Compressive Neuropathy (nu-rop-ah-thee) occurs when nerves in the spine are compressed. This disorder often affects older people. The nerves that exit the spinal canal become trapped, compressed, and swollen. Foraminal stenosis can be extremely painful and debilitating. The effects may temporarily damage or permanently destroy nerves. Foraminal stenosis (foe-ray-min-al sten-oh-sis, e.g. spinal stenosis ) is an example of a compressive neuropathy.
