Physicians at Stanford's Spine and Reconstructive Peripheral Nerve Clinic practice in the context of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary spine center. In addition to neurosurgeons, a pain anesthesiologist, rehabilitation psychiatrist, and a neuropsychiatrist manage surgical and nonsurgical disorders of the spine and peripheral nerves. We treat disc diseases of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine with minimally invasive endoscopic or laser techniques facilitated by an innovative, computer-guided imaging system developed here at Stanford. Patients receive these procedures on an outpatient basis or with a brief hospital stay. In either situation, minimally invasive surgery reduces postsurgical pain and promotes faster recovery. Spine surgery Stanford surgeons and researchers have made significant improvements in the surgical treatment of spinal cord and spine tumors using intraoperative monitoring, computer-assisted surgical navigation systems, and microsurgical techniques developed in our Radiosurgery and Image Guidance laboratories. These techniques include:

  • The Spine Centers specialize in treating many common diseases that are directly related to poor spinal health and bad posture. We use advanced non-surgical procedures designed to achieve long-term correction of postural disorders, compared to temporary pain relief. Our centers conduct research on a regular basis, so your treatment may consist of procedures many other physicians have not yet seen. With virtual certainty, once you have been thoroughly evaluated at on of our centers, we can tell you then whether or not our care is right for you. If it is, we will also give you an approximate time frame for completed correction and rehabilitation. If your problem can not be addressed at our center, you will be immediately referred to the most appropriate health care provider, as we have a vast network of traditional medical physicians and alternative health specialists in the South Genesee and Chesterfield/Anchor Bay areas.

    Chiari Malformation
    COMPREHENSIVE SPINE PROGRAM
COMPREHENSIVE SPINE DIAGNOSES INDEX What is a Chiari I Malformation? Chiari I malformation is a relatively simple anomaly that is unassociated with other congenital brain malformations. In contrast to the Chiari II malformation, in this disorder the vermis, fourth ventricle, and medulla are normal or only minimally deformed. Elongated, pointed, "peglike" cerebellar tonsils are displaced downward through the foramen magnum (the opening at the bottom of the skull) into the upper cervical spinal canal. It is believed that the bony skll posterior fossa is relatively too small for the cerebellum, resulting in the tonsillar displacement. Who gets Chiari I Malformations? The average age at presentation is 41 years. Females slightly outnumber males. It is seen in adolescents but occasionally is first encountered in older individuals. Rarely it is seen in several members of one family. What are the symptoms of Chiari I Malformation?
