de Wijer, Anton PhD *; de Leeuw, J. Rob J. PhD +; Steenks, Michel H. DDS, PhD *; Bosman, Frederik PhD * Abstract:
Study Design: The authors assessed the results of an anamnestic self-administered questionnaire given to 111 patients with temporomandibular disorders and 103 patients with cervical spine disorders. Objectives: The present study was performed to investigate whether patients with cervical spine disorders and subgroups of patients with temporomandibular disorders differ regarding specific and accompanying signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and cervical spine disorders. Summary of Background Data: Patients with temporomandibular disorders frequently show signs and symptoms related to cervical spine disorders, and, vice versa, patients with cervical spine disorders may show signs and symptoms related to temporomandibular disorders. Many authors have pointed out the existence of neuroanatomical and biomechanical relationships. Methods: The questionnaire included questions about pain, symptoms of temporomandibular disorders, accompanying signs and symptoms, psychosocial factors, and general health. Before their clinical examination, all patients were requested by mail to complete the questionnaire.

Patient Information Sheet on Conservative Care for Cervical Spine Disorders
You have probably seen your doctor because of either neck or arm pain, or both. Many conditions that cause these types of symptoms can be treated without surgery. In order for your physician to treat your symptoms, he or she will discuss the nature of your problem and perform a physical exam. Certain tests may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. There are many common treatment options that can be considered depending on your specific diagnosis. Diagnostic Testing The most common and basic diagnostic test is an x-ray of the neck or cervical spine. This is a quick, non-invasive procedure that can be performed in an office or hospital setting. X-rays use a small amount of radiation to produce an image of the bones, and to some degree, the soft tissues structures of the neck. This provides structural diagnostic information. The x-rays are performed at a variety of angles around the neck to gain as much diagnostic information as possible. These x-rays can help evaluate the alignment of your cervical spine, diagnosis fractures, bone spurs (arthritis), and some problems associated with the spinal discs. In many cases, regular x-rays are the only diagnostic test that your physician will require. However, more detailed structural information may be needed to devise a treatment plan. This information can be obtained from either Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Computed Axial Tomography (CT or CAT scans). In most patients, the MRI is the preferred advanced imaging study. The actual discs, nerves, spinal cord, and bones can be visualized. Patients with pacemakers, metal filings in their eyes (i.e. machinists), aneurysm clips, and certain other metallic objects in their body may not be able to have an MRI. Patients with artificial joint replacements and devices to fix fractures of other bones in the body generally can undergo MRI's. In patients who cannot undergo MRI's, or in some cases where additional information may be needed, CT's with or without dye may be necessary.

Spine Disorders Introduction
The NNI Spine programme manages a variety of spine disorders. The most common spine disorder is the degenerative condition of cervical and lumbar spondylosis, whereby the discs, bony protrusions and hypertrophied ligaments press on the nerve roots and spinal cord to cause pain, numbness, weakness and at times difficulty in walking.
Treatment
The majority of such condition can be treated with physical therapy and medications. However, those with spinal cord compression and neurological deficit, i.e. difficulty in walking, will require surgery. Less common are spinal tumours which can be benign or malignant. These tumours are usually required to be removed so that they do not cause further paralysis. Sometimes congenital disorders like chiari malformation with syringomyelia, where fluid circulating in the spinal cord is blocked, cause symptoms of numbness, weakness and loss of heat sensation. This condition may also improve with treatment.
Neuro-Spine Programme
Acute trauma with spinal injury is serious and often cause paralysis. The neuro-spine programme manages such patients in an acute spine injury unit in collaboration with the TTSH Spine Programme, whereby surgeons, therapists, nurses and rehabilitation physicians work together.

SPINE DISORDERS
There are an unlimited number of back and neck diagnoses that the physicians at Long Island Spine Specialists treat on a daily basis. Here are some of the more common ones. Compression fracture : A spinal fracture resulting from compression of the vertebra. Compression fractures can occur in any area of the spine. Degenerative Disc Disease : A normal wear-and-tear process of the spine that occurs after multiple annular tears have developed, resulting in the nucleus pulposus losing the ability to function as a shock absorber. Herniated Disc : Herniated Disc is also referred to as herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP), disc rupture, or disc prolapse. The disc consists of a tough outer layer (the annulus fibrosus) and a gel-like center (the nucleus pulposus). With age the center of the disc may start to lose water content, making the disc less effective as a cushion, possibly causing displacement of the disc’s center (called a herniated or ruptured disc) through a crack in the outer layer. Nerve Compression : A pathologic condition that causes pressure on nerves, resulting in possible nerve damage and muscle weakness or atrophy.

Is There Such A Thing As Cervicogenic Headache ?
by Amanda J. O'Connor Can cervical spine disorders cause headache? The role of the cervical spine in the aetiology of headache remains controversial despite the fact that there is a substantial body of literature which supports a cervicogenic origin of headache. The notion that disease or dysfunction of structures in the neck may give rise to headaches is however, not new. Lance (1982) quotes a lovely passage by John Hilton written between 1860 and 1862: This description suggests a referred pain pattern from the upper cervical nerves (C2) which supply the scalp at the back of the head to the vertex, and the trigeminal nerve (the 5th nerve), which supplies the face and anterior scalp up to the vertex. For cervical spine disorders to cause head pain there must be i) pain sensitive structures in the neck ii) changes in the neck structures sufficient to cause stimulus to the pain receptors. iii) identifiable neurological pathways from the cervical spine to the head.

The orthopaedic spine service at the University of Maryland offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of all spinal disorders. The skeletal trunk that part of the body made up of the spine (back and neck), shoulders, and pelvis acts as the major support system for the rest of the body. Sometimes called the trunk or the torso, the skeletal trunk is home to weight-bearing bones and joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerve centers that make movement possible and allow flexibility for the rest of the body. Because of the complexity of its many tasks, the skeletal trunk is vulnerable to many disorders. Problems such as degenerative arthritis, nerve impingement, fractures, tumors disorders that can also cause pain and disability in other parts of the body are common to the skeletal trunk.
