Ana's story has been featured on the Discovery Health Channel (January 2001), MSNBC Weekend Magazine (March 1999) and Dateline NBC (January 1999).
Our special little girl, Mary Anastasia, or "Ana" for short, was born at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday, 9/23/98, at 10:12a. She was delivered in her 31 st gestational week. She weighed 3lbs and 4.6 oz. (Click here to see her early pictures)!
Ana had been diagnosed with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in June during a routine ultrasound in her 17 th week of gestation. On 8/19/98, She was the 11 th baby to undergo maternal fetal (in-utero) surgery to close the SB lesion at Vanderbilt University Hospital, in an innovative procedure developed by Dr. Joseph Bruner and Dr. Noel Tulipan. Spina bifida facts According to the Spina Bifida Association of America more children are born with spina bifida than muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis combined. Spina Bifida occurs in 7 out of every 10,000 live births in the United States. Spina Bifida is considered to be underreported on birth certificates so the drop in the rate could be due to lack of reporting, not an actual decrease in occurence. In addition, a number of Spina Bifida pregnancies are voluntarily terminated and thus can't be determined how many pregnancies are terminated versus carried to term. Alternate Names : Spina Bifida Definition Myelomeningocele is a congenital disorder (birth defect) where the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth. This can result in the spinal cord and its covering membranes to protrude out of the infant's back.
Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida (Degrees of Severity) Myelomeningocele is one of the most common birth defects of the central nervous system . It is a neural tube defect in which the bones of the spine do not completely form, and the spinal canal is incomplete. This allows the spinal cord and meninges (the membranes covering the spinal cord) to protrude out of the child's back.

...Two weeks after birth I underwent the first of many operations that were to come- a ground breaking procedure in which the neurosurgeons opened my back up by a horizontal incision on the small of my back from one side to the other, unraveled a "tumor" full of knotted nerves at the base of my spine and "plugged" each nerve back into my spine... : scar tissue :
...I stood in front of the many mirrors in my bathroom, naked, and studied all of my scars. I looked at them, touched them, saw them. I think understanding comes only when you realize that depression is its own living and breathing thing, and that it has its own free will, and there is very little you can do to intercept it or prevent it. Spina Bifida Occulta and Open Spina Bifida - A Patient's Guide
John M. Shutack, M.D.
Neurosurgeon
Medical College of Virginia
Introduction to Spina Bifida
Spina bifida is a defined as any abnormal development of the bones of the spine that display a typical pattern, with or without the involvement of the brain, nerves or covering of the nerves (meninges). It is the most common congenital spine abnormality. The term spina bifida covers a range of malformations that always include deformities of certain parts of the vertebrae, the spinous process and vertebral arch. Some have described this process as a failure of these bones to fuse during early fetal development. Most common locations are the lower thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine. The cause behind this congenital malformation is not well understood. Data suggests that genetic factors play a predominant role, but nutritional and environmental factors may also contribute to the development of spina bifida. Classification Spina bifida is broken down into two categories: spina bifida occulta and open spina bifida. These subtypes are distinguished by the absence or presence of nerves, fluid that surrounds the nerves (CSF), and the meninges that are included within the deformity. See Table 1.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Spina Bifida March, 1998 Spina Bifida is a rare birth disorder, affecting approximately 1 in 12-1400 live births, although fortunately its incidence appears to be declining with each decade. It is the most serious birth disorder affecting the nervous system compatible with life. Spina bifida occurs when a portion of the fetal spinal cord, during the third and fourth weeks of pregnancy, fails to properly close. As a result, the child is born with a part of the spinal cord exposed on the back. There appear to be both genetic and environmental influences that contribute to spina bifida. The child born with spina bifida needs to have the exposed part of the spinal cord repaired, to prevent further injury to the spinal cord and to prevent infection. The malformation is usually closed during the first 24-48 hours after birth. The 80-85% of children with spina bifida who develop hydrocephalus will require a ventricular shunt to control the build-up of spinal fluid. Fortunately, with the proper medical care, children with spina bifida can lead active and productive lives. These children are a testament to the human spirit; most are successful in school and many are actively involved in modified sports activities despite their physical challenges. Twenty year follow-up studies of children with spina bifida show that they enter college in the same proportion as the general population, and many are actively employed. With recent improvements in care for these children, their outlook continues to improve.

Spina Bifida
Spina (spine) bifida (split or divided) is a "condition resulting when the bones of the spine form abnormally and fail to unite in the midline of the back" (Woodburn, 1975). If this split occurs, the spinal cord and its coverings may bulge out through the opening and cause a lump on the back. This malforming of the spine takes place within the first 28 days of pregnancy and varies in severity from a simple lump on the back to severe malformation of the back and lower limbs. Professor Nicholas Tulp gave spina bifida its name and gave the first formative description of the disability. Although the term and real medical description are somewhat recent, it is estimated that spina bifida occurred almost 12,000 years ago. It is also worth noting that it wasn't until 1761 that a man named Morgagni linked lower-limb deformity and hydrocephalus (an excessive amount of cerebro-spinal fluid within the head) with spina bifida. As a result of this finding, much has been done to find a "cure" for hydrocephalus, one of the major problems associated with spina bifida. One such discovery was in the late 1950s; the Spitz-Holter valve and the ventriculatrial shunt (a bypass or replacement of a major cavity between the brain and spinal cord implanted to control the flow of the cerebro-spinal fluid, so as to prevent pressure on the brain). Because of this find and other developments, an increasing number of children survive the more severe forms of spina bifida. Of these children, about 70 percent have normal intelligence (Menelaus, 1971).

Spina Bifida and Anencephaly
(Neural Tube Defects)
What are spina bifida and anencephaly?
Spina bifida and anencephaly are neural tube defects (NTDs), which are common birth defects that affect thousands of babies each year in the United States. The neural tube is an early stage of the developing nervous system in the embryo. How does spina bifida occur?
Spina bifida results from the failure of the spinal column to close, usually near the bottom of the spinal cord. What problems does spina bifida cause?
Persons with spina bifida usually have serious disabilities. Legs and feet are often paralyzed, and there are problems with bowel and bladder control. Learning disabilities are common and mental retardation sometimes occurs. How does anencephaly occur?
